OkeeDokee....So, they can't chase anyone down, they can't carry much gear, can't do much offroad in those tires, and they get the worst gas mileage imaginable. But boy they sure look cool driving around with erections in their Gladiator. Jeep owner here, and I approved this message.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department spent $59,851 on the customized Jeep Gladiator, Myrtle Beach Police receipts show. This includes $47,174 on the vehicle itself, about $11,500 in modifications and $1,200 on first aid kits.

They spent a lot on mods too

$11,500? I'm 'guessing' that includes the lights, sirens, cage in the back, and radios that would be in every police car? Still the DUMBEST way to spend $60K of taxpayer dollars. Get a fucking Explorer or Durango like every other PD and be done with it. At least those vehicles can exceed 80MPH.

Hey the gladiator can do 80. And overheat later

LMAO! Although, I have managed 82 in my Wrangler without overheating, so there's hope I guess?

I don’t know my 3.8 does 70-80 everyday without issues,

Edit: I take that back. Going over a bump with 10 year old axle sucks ass!

And that's all. My 3.6 JL (a newer, more powerful engine) struggles to get to 80 unless it's in 3rd gear most of the way. It ain't like we are going to track day in these things. Damn sure ain't chasing down speeders in them.

Ehhh 3.6 has issues 3.8 has issues. 3.8 is a push road instead of dual overhead cam. I don’t reach top power till like 4K rpms.

Upside: I’m on a full transmission and engine tune. I haven’t had issues with 50k miles of running it (130k on engine now) basically I don’t have a 4th gear in my 4speed anymore.

It tops out in 3rd @ 4k rpm’s / 65mph before shifting into 4th. And becomes a slow slow slow drag into higher speeds it takes like 40-50 seconds from 65-80mph.

But stopping isn’t an issue I let off the gas at any point it revs down to 1k rpm’s until it downshifts around 50-60mph. / engine rpm’s (is set to downshift around 900-1.1k on my computer. I can rev my auto gears all the way from 1.2 to 4k in all 3 of my gears before tricking my computer or upshift

Done with Diablo tuner. I also can remotely switch back to stock tune whenever I need.

I also remove power limiter on my jeep. And a few other deleted with exhaust. So I’m not sure how much my modifications have done compared to a stock

Edit: I’m not sure if the rpm’s dropping to 900 before downshifting is an issue, I have a brand new Adam’s 1310 driveshaft, no noise, no clicking. I haven’t noticed an issue yet.

My '22 3.6L is a hog, period. Manual trans too. It's just slow as shit. But it's also built to be a slow speed 4x4, so I really don't care. I knew that going in and bought it for what it does well - climb through shit no other vehicle can. Like I said - these aren't track vehicles. I'm not out here trying to embarrass Mustangs and Corvettes. I have 285 HP and around 360 ft. lbs of torque, and if I take it in for the clutch recall it's getting neutered, which is why I've been putting that off. Wranglers are also much heavier than people think they are for their wheelbase. My 91 Cherokee with a 4.0L I-6 could smoke this thing, and ironically enough, was a Police vehicle that my uncle bought from his department and then sold to me later. Ain't no JL or JT running down speeders.

Oh yeah I completely agree. Mine wasn’t built for the purpose of speeding and going fast. I just have freedom in every single gear. Like a manual. I’ve had the manual 3.8 and didn’t like the 6speed it had. Like you said, it’s sluggish, I felt the gears shifting hard even with clutch replacements. It was just not the best.

I also don’t do rock crawling. I just go camping on remote trails with it, I’ve taken it on some trails on the jeep app, in Indiana.

My jeep isn’t fast by any means. I’m a semi, literally, 0-60, it’ll take a year. Yeah with the shift point tunes comes downsides it will never rev properly for the next gear, it will always drop and rebuilt the rpm’s back up. It’s not to bad. But it’s definitely not factory.

Like you said, it’s meant to climb, my speed slowly climbs it’ll get there eventually. I don’t have death wobble anymore as I’ve replaced almost all my steering and suspension parts.

It’s not a patrol vehicles, it’s a recruitment vehicle. The hood shows its designation.

So you're saying it was an even BIGGER waste of money? Not sure how this justifies it's existence?

1

u/Alarmed-Positive457 7d ago

Didnt say it justified its existence, did I? Im just clearly stating what its purpose is, not justifying it.

Nice! With all that space that bed provides, they can carry an extra flashlight.

To be real honest…. Better than those police cyber trucks.

That's not a particularly high speed bump to clear. I can go harder off road in my Subaru Outback than a stock Gladiator like this can.

Not a high bump, but it’s purely a recruitment vehicle so it wasn’t expected to do much but be a pavement princess anyways. Would have been better to just get a standard patrol car and just add the livery on it but they went with this route instead.

....there...are...POLICE......cyber trucks???!????!!

no, I will NOT Google it. And I think I popped some sort of blood vessel in my brain

No high speed pursuits

Look, I'm a two-time wrangler owner and former police officer and as much as I love my Jeep, they would be TERRIBLE for law enforcement. Shit gas mileage, poor high-speed handling, questionable reliability, back doors hard to climb in WILLINGLY, let alone shoving arrestees into, problematic light mounting due to the layout and construction of the roof...the only place I could see this being useful would be someplace like Moab, but only as a specialized off-road patrol vehicle, and then only if built to the purpose. This thing is pure mall-crawler and a criminal waste of taxpayer money. Chief of MBPD should be fired for this stunning lack of judgement.
