What current NHL player will you defend no matter what?

Your emotional support player, if you will. It doesn't even have to be a current player on your favorite team. Just someone you will always support and defend so long as their in the league.

Also, not talking about supporting decisions or the players opinions outside of hockey. Strictly hockey related support!

Chris Tanev

86

u/SalaciousPanda 1d ago

Just after the Leafs signed him, I was at a sporting event in Vancouver and was chatting with a long-time scout and development guy in the Flames org. He heaped praises upon Tanev and the signing, saying how much of a warrior the guy is, heart and soul of the locker room, and the "hardest working hockey player" he'd ever met (dude has been working in the industry for like 2-3 decades).

I was so happy to see everything he said about the guy was 100% correct.

I miss having Tanev on the Canucks but I am glad he's getting the recognition he deserves around the league. The dude is a warrior who eats pucks for breakfast and he's just so damned calm and collected in his own end. He consistently makes correct decisions under pressure when retrieving the puck in the defensive zone.

Yup hated rival and Kopitar is awesome.

57

The thing with Kopi is that he's basically perfect. He's the cleanest player in the league, he's a Selke and Stanley Cup winner, he's a point producer, he's a vet. No one has ever said one bad thing about Kopitar throughout his entire career, which means he doesn't need defending.

Corey Perry, on the other hand, is a saint.

Agreed. Even the massive bags under his eyes have disappeared from his early years. That man either got himself a CPAP machine or a 12 Step program.

Either way, it's impressive to stick with those for so long as a human being, let alone All Star caliber athlete with money to burn and a city like LA to spend it.

I grew up in Southern California as a big Kings and Padres fan. Kopitar is to the Kings as Gwynn was to the Padres, imo at least. An all-time great, as a player and a role model.

To me he's like Tim Duncan of the NBA.

Absolutely a class act, team leader and franchise player with multiple championships to show for it. But, he leaves it at that and lets the results speak for themselves. He doesn't showboat, give big interviews or gets in the press on his own accord.

My buddy played with him back in Aus when they were younger. Said he was quite clearly several levels above everyone else, no matter how "good" they were, and it was evident he was cut from a different cloth (as far as Aussie hockey players go).

Even just making it to the NHL at all is a feat that few will make. The fact that he’s Australian and has been around even this long is another huge accomplishment.

I was already a fan of Ehlers’ game, but when I saw him protecting Evans I was like THAT’S A GOOD EGG RIGHT THERE! I’ve seen him toss the mitts to defend teammates a few times, too, so he isn’t afraid to get a little sandy, either.

If I were putting together a list of guys I wish played for my team, Ehlers would be at the top of the list.

Not enough can be said about this man. The amount of good this man has done in the last year alone is incredible.

18

u/joellecarnes CBJ - NHL 1d ago

Pretty sure that man basically single-handedly held the Jackets together this year on the ice (yes I know about all the other guys that did too but him showing up and playing every single day really motivated the guys to continue, and when he wasn’t playing you could clearly tell they needed him)

9

u/AARM2000 CHI - NHL 1d ago

I know so many people were affected by what happened to Gaudreau, but it really had to Monahan extra hard on the team. The fact that he stepped and become a leader (not that he wasn't before) shows how great of a person he is.

8

u/joellecarnes CBJ - NHL 1d ago

Oh agreed - all the plans for the future he had with Johnny and he found out about him the day he was loading up the moving truck to drive to Columbus. He could have stepped back, could have taken the time to heal on his own. But the fact that he still carried out their plans and filled Johnny’s shoes on the team meant so much to everyone in that locker room

He had a bit of a renaissance last year, but he struggled for a season or 2 before that. People were complaining about his bloated contract. And if I'm being honest, even last year when things were going better, he was still overpaid.

My take on this is if the Montreal Canadiens have to overpay someone, they might as well overpay Brendan Gallagher. Price may have been the team's foundation, but Gallagher was the heart and soul of that team during the 2010s.

9

u/eriverside MTL - NHL 1d ago

It's easier to swallow when you consider he was criminally underpaid when he has his 30 goal seasons.

You're not supposed to pay for past performance, but even I didn't expect him to drop off so fast. I honestly thought the new contract was a big discount initially but he cratered before it even started.

I think Kris Letang has been criminally underrated for a long time. Honestly, he’s one of the most underrated players in NHL history in my opinion.

He was the best defenseman on a team that was one of the best teams in the NHL for 12 years. That doesn’t just happen. He also led the team in ice time every year for all those years. Again, you don’t do that with someone who’s not an excellent player.

Letang definitely made his share of mental mistakes and when he did, they were often glaring. However, he was also an outstanding two-way defenseman who created a lot of breakouts for his team.

There’s no way the Penguins have all that success without that guy. Not even close.

The Penguins almost always beat those Capitals teams in the playoffs and I always thought it was because Washington didn’t have an answer for Letang. He just does a lot of things for your team that leads to wins. He’s a hell of a skater. He moves the puck beautifully. He’s feisty as hell in his own end and plays way above his weight class. That’s why he was always on their first team, power-play and penalty kill, and on their top defense pairing.

Just a very reliable player in all three zones.

On my team: Will Cuylle, Vincent Trocheck. Trocheck bc i've met him and he was the only player that actually stopped to take a pic w/me. And there's some fans(of the rangers) that legit hate him. I like Cuylle bc of his upside.

Not on my Team: Roman Josi. Beast of a player, and a absolute man rocket. Tage Thompson, shoots missiles, and he should be on USA's Olympic team. Ivan Barbashev. Love his game. I call him, "the one the rangers let get away" in 22/23. Could have traded for him, they chose old man Tarasenko. But the last one, Matt Murray(the Penguins goalie). Met him. a genuinely good guy and I always root for the guy whatever sweater he's wearing.

Every time I hear him speak it makes me hope he does something media-related in the NHL after he retires. He's so well-spoken and thoughtful when he wants to be.

It's a dumb answer since no one's talking shit about him but, since no one's said him, Sidney Crosby.

Been in the limelight since he was ~15, have yet to hear a single bad thing about him. And have heard plenty of above and beyond style good things. Also one of the GOATs in terms of on-ice play.

So much respect for the guy. Wouldn't want my (unborn) kids to look up to too many pro athletes but I'd be ecstatic for them to emulate Sid.

11

u/eukomos COL - NHL 1d ago

He definitely fits the ā€œemotional support hockey boyā€ part of the question, regardless of whether he needs defending.

11

u/Buxom_StrwbryBlnde 1d ago

Draisaitl. Although he doesn’t usually need defending since his skill speaks for itself.

I had a t-shirt made that says "I Am Mason Marchment's Attorney and He is Innocent". I have worn it to games in Denver because I live in Colorado and endured many jeers. I'm not going to say he never embellishes because I'm not delusional, but I think it looks even worse because he's a dramatic bitch who is naturally expressive. He may no longer be in Dallas, but I'll probably always have a soft spot for that goofy motherfucker.

I’ll go with Matthews. Dude gets ripped apart online just because he’s a Leaf. Incredibly underrated defensively, one of the best goal scorers in the last 30 years, and fairly entertaining off the ice, in a league where most players show zero personality. People want to see him fail because of where he plays.

The answer is Noone. Even if I respect a player like Linus Ullmark alot, I cant say I would defend him "no matter what". If he started to sexually assault players and perhaps even the referee I think he should be banned for a suitable time.

Dylan Larkin. I think he gives us everything he has every time he’s on the ice. I have a lot of respect for him. I’ve also watched him grow up in the system, so maybe that makes me like him a little more. I am not saying he’s the most skilled, but he’s got some tools and all of the heart.
