Canucks remaining perfectly mediocre for the last half-decade is the most Canucks thing imaginable

I think if EP40 didn't regress hard this season, and the drama with JT didn't happen then Vancouver's trend probably looks very different. Something this type of view doesn't capture is what happened between then and now. If I plotted 2021-22 vs 2023-24 then Vancouver would be in the top right portion of the chart. I've always liked the Canucks so I'm hoping they buck this trend and can get some consistency going

Almost nobody on this sub mentions how crucial Demko is to the success of the Canucks. He raises their win percentage about .100 points (no data, just a very rough ball park.) If he’s healthy this year the Canucks are much better, if he gets injured again they will end up out of the playoffs.

Pettersson and Miller combined were projected to get around 200 points last season. Instead they got 80 points for the Canucks.

Two superstars basically became below average NHL players. That's going to hurt any team.

Haha on the bright side, in five years the preds could be far up in the top left part of the chart. As an Avs fan, I hope that’s not the case (sorry) but only time will tell

It won’t be too long until we reclaim our rightful spot as the 2wc / first round exit. Just wait.

i’d say it at least probably can’t go worse than last year but i’d be a liar 🫠

The NHL runs through Vancouver.

The Habs needed the biggest jump in the league just to get to league average and yet the vibes could not be more immaculate.

u/Sort_of_Frightening 1d ago

Off the ice vibes are Cup–level, much better than you’d expect for a team still only average

u/HanshinFan MTL - NHL 1d ago

"Still only average" is a bit unkind. They were the youngest team in NHL history to make the playoffs last year and now added Demidov who is a potential star to the lineup. The whole core is under 27 and are locked up to long term deals and they still have a pristine cap situation to add pieces in FA or at the trade deadline. They also still have an above-average prospect pipeline still coming up even with Hutson graduating (and winning the Calder by a lot). I think the vibes are warranted.

3

u/Boboar MTL - NHL 23h ago

You forgot Bolduc and Dobson! We did lose Armia and Dvorak who were important depth guys and I could see the penalty kill being a step worse, but overall the additions are way more than the subtractions.

1

u/Sort_of_Frightening 16h ago

Dude, I’m all in. Vibes are totally warranted. ‘Still only average’ just means the Habs are sitting around the league average here. But they’ve already made a huge jump from 2021, and with their playoff experience last season, plus Demidov, Dobson, and Bolduc, the trend is clearly up and to the right.

Basically only a handful of teams changed in the past few years. Crazy

u/starfish2686 VAN - NHL 1d ago

That’s probably just how the cycle of build/rebuild in the salary cap era looks on a graph. Teams in a good phase are capitalizing, teams in a rebuild are staying pat, and some teams are rising stars or falling from grace.

7

u/RyanWalts MTL - NHL 1d ago

It sounds obvious but graphs like this just reinforce how important it is to build a good team. It’s so hard to climb out of the bottom. Once they’re there, every year they do make the playoffs is another chance at the cup and another gamble that enough goes their way to win the cup. I get why some GMs scratch and claw to hold onto contention, it’s tough looking at that cliff and knowing it’ll be years getting back up

5

u/starfish2686 VAN - NHL 1d ago

Ask the Canucks front office how holding onto contention is going. So stupid especially in a market where the fans will keep coming no matter how good the team is.

7

u/RyanWalts MTL - NHL 1d ago

If you have Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson, I feel like it’s malpractice to blow it up lol

That’s two guys who can win individual hardware any given year, plus Demko who was a finalist for the Vézina. I know Petterson’s been off his game for a bit but he’s talented enough to just bet on the bounce back coming. There’s a lot of teams in much worse positions, it’s really not a bad spot to be in

u/starfish2686 VAN - NHL 1d ago

I’m an optimist and I fully agree with you. But this is a minority take within the Canucks fan base. I’m not as down on the team as anyone else and I don’t believe 2024 was a fluke, we just need the stars to align again.

But we should’ve blown everything up in 2014.

This charts 4 seasons. In those 4 seasons, 8 teams, or half the field, have made the playoffs all 4 times (4 in each conference), while 7 teams (8 if you count Arizona and Utah as the same team) haven't made the playoffs at all.

Took the feedback I got on the version I uploaded last night and made some tweaks

The top chart shows the “before and after” view with each team’s point % in the 2021-22 season on the x axis and the 2024-25 season on the y axis. The quadrants show which teams move above/below league average, or stayed above/belo league average. Teams below the diagonal blue line got worse (at least from a points % perspective), while teams above the line improved

The bottom chart show each team’s change in points % across the two seasons, ordered by who improved the most to who declined the most.

While there’s a lot going on, I think there are some interesting trends here.

  • For the most part, the good teams stayed good but didn’t win as much (see the cluster of teams with the Panthers, Avs, Calgary, etc.)
  • Winnipeg moved up massively in the standings, but it feels to me that they’re still perceived as not much of a threat (probably given their consistent early exits in the playoffs)
  • The bad teams from four seasons ago are a lot more dispersed than the good teams from four seasons ago. Some teams, (e.g. Montreal, Utah/Arizona, and New Jersey) improved massively but are still just average. While other bad teams took basically no steps forward (e.g. Anaheim, Buffalo, Islanders) or regressed (Chicago and San Jose)
  • Then you have Vancouver who has basically stayed exactly average…

I think if in 5 years I run this again, I could see:

  • teams like Colorado and Tampa moving more towards the middle of this chart. They’ve had good runs but I think their windows are closing and the cupboards have run dry
  • Teams like Montreal, Utah, and Ottawa should continue improving and probably move up and to the right
  • San Jose should move higher up the y axis. It’d be almost impressive if they manage to stay a bottom dweller…

But overall, my hypothesis is that there’s a general cycle to the standings in hockey. Over time, teams that start in the bottom left move up to the top left, then to the top right, then down to the bottom right, and finally back to the bottom left

I appreciate the revision, especially the addition of the X=y line

Montreal in 1st and Boston is 32nd? Looks perfect to me!

If this was the 2022-2023 year vs current you'd have even more to celebrate about.

I would love to see the change in points % plotted against 2025 roster age. Of the teams that improved the most, it strikes me that MTL, OTT, NJD and UTA are young teams on the upswing.

5

u/milk_drinker69 COL - NHL 1d ago

I think that’d be a very interesting chart to make. Unfortunately I can’t make it right now :/

I pull all my stats from the NHL API and then run my own aggregator scripts to compile this info and plot it out. Roster info has always been a bit painful to pull/aggregate. That’s something I think I should be able to do with enough time though. Going to add it to my roadmap!

It's amazing how much dramatic news came out of Vancouver only for them to land smack dab in the center of this graph. Not the C logo I expected to find in the middle.

I mean, it wasn't good news and ideally we should have moved more.top right after 2024 and then it imploded

this was not Ottawa’s logo in 2024-25 nor was it Ottawa’s logo in 2021-22 😭😭😭

3

Fair. Idk how sens fans feel about the current logo but I prefer the old one they used up until 2019 (?). Just my preference but if it’s a hot topic for sens fans I’m fine with changing it

This should be a 3 year rolling average instead of fixed point on individual season but cool graph

5

u/hnglmkrnglbrry CBJ - NHL 1d ago

I think you need to remove the dash lines in the center because they're at an arbitrary value and make it seem like they are the axes. Teams that improved look like they are negative values.

11

u/Borror0 MTL - NHL 1d ago

The graph clearly labels 0.55 as average.

7

u/french_sheppard MTL - NHL 1d ago

The 3 lines tell different stories.

The dotted lines are league averages for 2021 and 2024. The placement tells you which quadrant they're in (above/below average in 2021, above/below average in 2024).

The trendline can be used to evaluate whether the team has improved or not. If it's above the trendline, then they're better. If they're below the line, they're worse.

u/Plague183 TOR - NHL 1d ago

I’m kinda optimistic about the Leafs because every year since 20-21 (18-19 really) I’ve heard they blew their best chance to win and they’ll be bad now and every year they’ve been fine in the regular season.
