Personal Setup 3D printable magnetic outdoor enclosure for Aqara door and windows sensor

Get it on Makerworld

I needed a way to tell if the garage door was left open at night so i made a magnetic enclosure for the Zigbee-based door sensor from Aqara which integrates very well in HA. The magnets do not interfere with the readings since they are mounted on the side and far away from the sensor. Since this sensor is not rated for outside use i made the enclosure as waterproof as i could and it has been working very well.

I also made a version that attaches with screws and another without mounting options which can for instance be used with double sided tape (i put one on my window, see the last photo).

I had a similar problem and used a simpler solution

When the door is closed it swivels into the magnet it signals closed, when it's open it swivels to open and away from the magnet. Works really well

I am so confused…

That's what the sensor looks like when the door is closed.

When the garage door is open, gravity pulls the sensor away from the magnetic contact.

When the door goes up.. It swivels and goes away from the magnet

its looking good , is that for the aesthetics or why an enclose is needed ? anyway either of them need to be sticked to the frame.

They're not waterproof. I had one outside on my automatic gate, I think it lasted about 2 or 3 months before water got inside, I had sealed it with electrical tape, but I guess water ah... finds a way.

It is indeed for waterproofing. Since it is inside the garage rain does not get directly over it so i didn't seal it. For the one on the window i am hoping the enclosure can keep the water out and if it fails i will buy another sensor and seal the enclosure with something

These aqara sensors are crazyyyy when it comes to battery life

Literally multiple years between changes

Very neat. I'm in need of something like that myself for the gate, unfortunately it's way too far for Zigbee, unless I create a small separate network with it's own controller and just that device down there .. maybe.

I'm kind of hoping Zooz releases an EU version of their zwave one for long range, that seems like a good use case for it, but I may just try out yours to start with.
