Incredible. Apparently this dude stole a piece of mail from the cameraman and it was a suicide letter from his friend; heāll never know what was said in the letter because of this absolute piece of shit. Glad his jeep got wrecked.
āIt's not just stolen packages, money or identities; Brehmer also had something more personal stolen -- a letter to him written by a friend who took his own life.
"When I found out he stole something I could never get back, answers I'll never have, reasons why my friend ended up killing himself, I lost every bit of composure I had," he said.ā

Curious as to how he knew his mate sent him a suicide letter, like did he send someone else one and mentioned it or did he say like hey bro im gonna kill myself and I've sent a letter explaining why then killed himself or...like how does one know they have a suicide note on the way after the fact? Not denying it by all means, just curious
239
u/BugEyedBigSky 14d ago
I was curious about this too! I imagine maybe other friends/people in this personās life received a letter - and he presumably was close enough to them to assume he would have also received one.
Or informed delivery from USPS as others have mentioned.

There is something you can sign up for where you get pictures of the mail being delivered to you that day. He could have that and seen a letter from his friend who recently killed himself. Its not a stretch to think maybe the friend had never sent an actual letter before, now there is a letter and he killed himself, probably something of a suicide note.

Everyone sign up for this free service. My husband took a piece of important mail that was a tax document out our box and because of this service I knew the exact date it was received by USPS. God damn it. A friend commiting suicide is tragic already, but loosing his last words in a suicide note? it's like a 2x booster for the trauma. :( :(

Well the article does not state that he would never get it back. He may have had the advanced notice that the letter was coming. "Stole something I could never get back" may mean that he took matters into his own hands to retrieve the item before he got away, that's how much it meant to him. Maybe I am missing something.
16
u/BugEyedBigSky 14d ago
I hope he is able to get the letter. :( āAnswers Iāll never haveā makes me think it might be gone forever, though.

Yep could have been anything breaking. Could have been anyone. Literally nothing to prove how it got broken. A human traffic cone could have tripped on his stolen mail and bumped his head on the glass for all we know. Or it happened some other way and the theif is playing victim. We just don't know. Evidence is inconclusive.

u/bartthetr0ll 14d ago
Towards the end I think it was tire slashing sounds, somebody said something along the lines of give me the knife and it was like a pop and a hiss sound, plus that would make more sense then buggering up windows to keep him from driving off. I'd imagine a whole duffel bag full of mail is some serious prison time, even just taking 1 piece of mail is federal

As much as I'd love for this to be true, it's extremely unlikely. It'll get pled down and he'll most likely get a slap on the wrist. Maybe some county jail time. But unless he's on parole or something like that, prison isn't likely.

In the comments under this video I read the neighbour lost a suicide letter from a friend who recently killed himself (apparently he knew he was getting that letter due to recieving photos of the expacted mail, which isn't uncommon, so I'm told) due to this guy stealing and destroying mail.

I work in retail loss prevention. I see this behavior all the time. People will insult you, threaten you, and show no remorse for what they are doing.
But the moment they face actual consequences, then it's all apologies and sob stories.

u/CriticalSpeech 14d ago
Thatās not what I heard. The neighbors across the street are having some demo work done on their house and that was just the workers dropping out some old windows.
Coincidentally, the man who is stealing mail was too blinded by the pepper spray to drive well. I heard he ran into a couple things when he was fleeing the scene
14
u/sterling_mallory 14d ago
Also that wasn't pepper spray it was water. Guy filming just wanted him to stay hydrated.
46
u/Northbound-Narwhal 14d ago
Oh, that's 100% illegal, but damn is it satisfying
42
u/Jonestown_Juice 14d ago
Depends on the state. It's legal to detain someone for a citizen's arrest in California (which is where I assume they are since they said Studio City). Using the pepper spray probably wasn't since it wasn't used defensively.
18
u/MisterSlosh 14d ago
Preventing the criminal from fleeing is covered in a citizens arrest which would be considered in blinding them, but then if they 'escape' while blind the citizen could probably be held liable for any injury or damages.
California has wild laws different than most of the rest of the country so a judgment on this would be interesting if they even got the citizens involved in the case.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Northbound-Narwhal 14d ago
That's true, but legal detention in California requires use of minimum force to detain the person and immediate delivery to the police if possible. Hitting him while he's begging them to stop on film might get them false imprisonment charges.

He wonāt stop this. I have a friend from my early life that made this his game. Stealing mail. Cleaning checks. Selling items. He has been arrested for it twice now. Changes the scheme and back at it. Third arrest he was using high school age girls to go to the mailbox. He made that work for almost 5 years before they caught him again. Donāt worry, he is still in jail. 3 strikes.
5
u/YouGotTheWrongGuy_9 13d ago

6
u/JessRoyall 13d ago
Mostly stolen checks. He can change the payee to someone else. He gives the check to that person to cash the each person keeps some of the money. Itās felony fraud, felony mail fraud, felony theft, and trespassing charges all wrapped up into one fun bundle of crime. He also steals lots of items that get sent by mail. Jewelry, gift cards, cash, etc. people send all kinds of valuable things via mail.

Why would he be stealing mail? Like, packages, or letters?
25
u/Taddles2020 14d ago
A surprising number of people mail cash, but my guess is he is looking for credit cards, debit cards, credit card applications, etc.
10
u/hauttdawg13 14d ago
Not just applications. Itās actually a pretty common fraud trend (worked the last 10 years in debit card fraud and Account takeover).
One thing we do see is fraudsters will request replacement cards (not super hard to pass those prompts with general info you can find on Facebook) and have them shipped to the house. They will then sit on the house and wait for the mail to be delivered then grab the new card out of the mailbox.
They mostly know we monitor heavily for cards being sent elsewhere, once we blocked that, many have resorted to the scheme above.
While I doubt that the person above is doing that, we get about 40-50 attempts per day total, with about 5 successfully ordered per day. Based on our size of my bank, Iād assume for the total US this happens around 100 times per day.

I have new neighbors at my apartment where Iām like āwhy do you even pay rentā because they are always ALWAYS outside. On the stairs or sidewalk.
Right when they moved in, I had a huge package stolen for the first time.
Also ordered food. Went to the door the second it said ādeliveredā. And the dad was standing there holding his door open while his son reached down for my food.
I start yelling to myself whenever I see them, when I get inside now and I think they are scared of me. One time they walked out their door and instantly started hitting their door to be let back inside when they saw me lol. I know for SURE they are the thieves
6
u/RedLight_King 12d ago

Messing with the mail can also be considered a federal crime since the USPS is a federal entity. When it came to the prospect of the mail, the founders of the U.S. didn't want to have to deal with the headache of trying to deal with multiple different mail systems from state to state so decided to simplify it into one system that covered the (at the time) U.S.
