Best story to explain being unemployed for two years?

I quit my job two years ago because I was burned out. Since then, I’ve been busy with my wedding, moving in with my husband, and traveling. Now I’m ready to jump back into work, but I’m a bit worried about explaining this gap, especially since I’m in an Asian city where people can be more conservative and judgemental towards the fact that I was just taking a break for my health and well-being.

I’m even considering making up a reason if I have to. Any suggestions on what I could say in an interview?

Thanks a lot

Should I mention that I’ve previously applied to a company that I’m about to interview with?

I applied to this company (privately owned medical research institute) as a new college grad and was rejected. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to land another job in the same field doing biomedical research. Fast forward two years, I re-applied and managed to get an interview for a similar role this time.

The reason why I want to bring up being previously rejected is so I can say something like I’m actually glad I didn’t get the job right out of college, that I’ve grown a lot both professionally and personally so now I can bring the best version of myself to the company now that I’ve got more experience.

I feel like this could be compelling but idk if it’s taboo to mention that I’ve been rejected by them before. Is it even worth mentioning or am I better off leaving it out?

TIA!

Interview Help

I am a MBA student with prior work experience in architecture. I need help to prepare for summer internship. Can anyone help me with the behavioural questions? I need to frame them from past architecture experience. Honest replies would be appreciated.

  1. Tell me about a time when you demonstrated leadership.
  2. Describe a situation where you worked in a team and faced challenges.
  3. Give an example of a time you failed and what you learned from it.
  4. Tell me about a time you had to persuade someone or a group to accept your idea.
  5. Describe a situation where you had to resolve a conflict.
  6. Can you share an example of when you went above and beyond in a professional or academic setting?
  7. Tell me about a time you had to adapt to a challenging or unexpected situation.
  8. Describe a time when you had to manage a difficult team member or stakeholder.
  9. Give an example of a goal you set and how you achieved it.
  10. Tell me about a time you made a tough decision with limited information.

HR Delays

So I had my final interview for an analyst position this past Friday, felt it went pretty well and they said I would hear back soon. Tuesday morning I hear back from the HR rep that has been setting up the interviews asking to set up time that day to go over next steps. I reply back, giving my availability and don’t hear back. I email a few hours later to provide my availability for the rest of the week and don’t hear back. I email again this morning, following up, reiterating my interest and providing the times I am available for Friday and next week. Get an immediate response saying they are available today at 10am. I have to move a meeting but say that I would be available. 10am rolls by and I hear nothing, not a phone call or email. Am I actually being considered for the job? It’s a newer company and can be pretty busy but every other stage of the process went smoothly.

AlphaSense AI Research Engineer Hiring Process - What to Expect?

I was approached by AlphaSense for the role of AI Research Engineer. I have no idea on what to expect in the process because generally for AI/ML/DS positions a wide array of questions are asked from different topics. If anyone has appeared for similar role at AlphaSense, it would help a lot if you can share your experience. Thanks a lot!

Are they overstepping?

My future(?) supervisor from a company I have applied to said he wants to come visit me at my current job to show off my merchandising skills. Said they aren't gonna tell anyone who they are but it would be nice to meet me in person and see what kind of store I run. Has anyone experienced this before? Being that i am on vacation this week, is it possible my current team could screw this up for me by not maintaining my standards?

Laid off end of August - is this the right way to list on resume?

Hi all,

My employer told me in June that my job was ending the end of August (tomorrow).

I have been presenting as still employed (because I am) on my resume and in interviews. I am still on payroll till tomorrow and still have access to Teams and Outlook. Is this correct? I basically haven't worked since June, even though I have been getting paid and getting benefits.

Just feels a bit weird when I haven't "worked" in 3 months.

Interview follow ups

Y’all this job, i applied on the 1st of July, had a phone call maybe a month later, interview three weeks ago, followed up a week later, hiring manager wasn’t in until this week to make a decision (wasn’t there for initial interview) , when or should I follow up again? Taking into consideration the bank holiday weekend it’s been a few days that a decision could have been made in right?

Reached the last round of interviews at a dream company… and blew it

This feels like the biggest missed opportunity of my career. Recently, I interviewed with a very popular US-based MNC. All candidates, including me, went through five rounds of interviews. However, only I was shortlisted for the final in-person round. Unfortunately, in that last round I was asked questions from an area where I’m weak, and I couldn’t answer even the basic ones. I performed poorly. The role requires a specific set of skills, and in the earlier rounds they evaluated everything thoroughly except that one particular skillset . But in the final round, they focused only on that skill I’m weakest at. Today, I spoke with the HR, and she told me I didn’t do well in the last round. She also mentioned that while that skill is necessary, it isn’t considered the baseline for the role (though I personally feel it is a must-have). She said they’ll discuss internally and get back to me. I can’t help but feel this is going to be a negative outcome. To me, it feels like the biggest lost opportunity of my life.

Mainframe interview experience

Interview Takeaway – Senior Software Engineer

I had an interview today for a role that was posted as Senior Software Engineer (3+ years experience required). I have 5+ years of experience in development.

In reality, the interviewer was looking for a person who knows everything about mainframes end-to-end like development, operations, security, maintenance like essentially the only mainframe person at the company. The way it was described, it sounded more like a role for someone with 15+ years of mainframe experience.

The focus of the interview was almost entirely on security and access control, not on development, modernization, or problem-solving. When I asked what the role truly involved, they said the company is moving away from mainframes within 3 years, and they just need someone to keep the lights on until then.

To add to that, there was no mention of visa sponsorship, which is a key factor for me.

It was a challenging experience, but also a useful reminder of how important it is for job descriptions to clearly reflect the reality of a role.

I interviewed for the same position as my colleague. She’s heard back but I haven’t…

My coworker and I both applied for the same role. They are hiring across 100 counties in the state, with each person covering one county within about a 40 mile radius.

She applied about a week before me and her process moved very quickly. She had a phone interview, then a Zoom interview, and she was offered the job just three days later. She will be covering the county where I live.

I applied shortly after she told me about the job. At first my process moved just as fast with a phone interview and then a Zoom interview. During my interview I was told the same thing she was told, that I should expect to hear something within two weeks and if I do not hear anything by then to reach out to HR.

The difference is that she interviewed on a Monday and had her offer that Thursday. I interviewed on a Wednesday and now it is the following Thursday, a full week later, and I still have not received an update.

Since she is already covering my county, I assume if I were selected it would be for another county within that 40 mile radius. I just cannot help wondering if it is safe to assume that I did not get the job since I have not heard anything yet or if it is possible that they are simply moving more slowly with me.

TLDR: Coworker interviewed Monday and got an offer by Thursday. I interviewed Wednesday, it has now been over a week with no news. Am I out of the running or is it just slower for me?

.NET Developer & SAP/ERP Specialist in Porto struggling with job search. Any strategic advice?

Olá,

I moved from Iran to Porto almost a year ago, and my search for a .NET developer role has been surprisingly difficult, resulting mostly in automated rejections. I'm hoping for insights from the local tech community.

My Profile:

  • 12+ years in the retail tech industry with deep domain expertise in Supply Chain Management, Warehouse functionalities, and Retail IT.
  • Built complex systems, including middleware bridging SAP ERP and POS systems.
  • Hands-on experience with SAP S/4HANA (MM & SD modules) during ERP migration projects across 200+ stores, aligning IT with procurement, inventory, and sales processes.
  • Progressed from development roles to CIO, but my passion and core skills are still hands-on with .NET, SQL, and web development.
  • Recently freelancing on web/ERP-related projects while continuing to apply locally.

My questions:

  • Niche Value: Are there specific Portuguese companies (in tech, logistics, or retail) that would highly value a hybrid profile (SAP MM/SD + .NET + retail supply chain domain knowledge)?
  • Application Strategy: As a senior profile, should my approach be different? Are there recruiters or agencies here that focus on experienced ERP/SAP or .NET professionals?
  • Language Barrier: For senior technical or ERP-focused roles, how strict is the Portuguese language requirement? (I am actively learning). Obrigado

Verbally Confirmed Offer, "Offer" in Workday, but HR is Ghosting me for the Offer Letter?

Hi everyone,

I'm in a really confusing and frustrating situation with what I thought was a dream job offer and could use some outside perspective on whether this is normal for a huge company or if I'm being strung along.

The Situation: I interviewed for a specialized engineering role at a very large, well-known aerospace MNC.

The Good Signs (Why I've been holding on):

  • After two great interviews about five weeks ago, HR called to say I was their #1 choice and the feedback was excellent.
  • I've had multiple verbal confirmations since then, including "Yes, it's confirmed, you're selected."
  • My official status in their HR system (Workday) is "Offer."
  • Last week, I received an automated system email with the subject "Congratulations" that said they were "progressing with my contract" and asked me to update my personal details.
  • They discussed relocation benefits with me (flights + hotel).

The Problem / Red Flags:

  • It has now been over a month since the initial "top choice" call, and I still don't have a written offer letter.
  • The stated reason for the delay has always been that they are "waiting for finance approval" on the final salary package.
  • HR has gone completely silent. I sent a polite, time-sensitive follow-up email on Monday for the offer letter, which has been ignored.
  • I called HR today (Thursday) around noon, but it went to voicemail. I sent a polite follow-up text. It is now end of day, and I've still heard nothing back.
  • The original start date they gave me (Sept 1st) is now obviously impossible, but they haven't communicated anything about this.

I'm getting extremely anxious because I need to plan a major relocation from another city and can't do anything without a signed contract. Also this is my only hope for a job, been a year into the job search....

My Questions for you:

  1. Is this level of delay (5+ weeks) and complete ghosting normal for a massive MNC, or is this a sign of a deeply broken process?
  2. Am I being strung along, or is this likely just a massive internal mess and I just need to be more patient?
  3. My next planned step is to email the hiring manager tomorrow (Friday) morning if I still hear nothing from HR. Is this a smart escalation or too risky?
  4. At what point is it wise to just mentally walk away from this?

TL;DR: Verbally offered a job at a dream aerospace company a month ago. System status is "Offer" and I have a "congratulations" email. Now HR has been ghosting my emails and calls for a week, blaming a "finance delay" that I was told a week ago. The original start date is impossible. Is this a giant red flag, and should I escalate to the hiring manager?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Do you ever have an interview and one person seems quite cold towards you? I had an in person interview & this person seemed a bit cold & after my second one online she seemed even colder. No warmness at all. Now hoping that I don’t get the job. 🥶

Been with sales for 27 years and this morning interviewing for an operations manager position within the same company I currently work for. Nervous as heck. Don't feel prepared. I usually am terrible at interviews and just hoping I don't make a complete ass out of myself today.

Hr called me for negotiations. I said 30-40% hike and he said 10% is max we can offer. I was stressed and desperate. I couldn’t say a word. Did I fuck up the deal?

When I can get the feedback from recruiters

I recently had a final round interview for a job opportunity through your agency the day before yesterday. I was informed that I would receive feedback yesterday, but I haven’t heard back yet. Does I mean I was not selected?

"Why do you need a job?" How do you respond to this?

I got a call from a hiring manager for the job which was about Content creation, and after asking about me and my experience in social media and content creation,

She asked me "Why do you need a job?"

I paused for 5 sec and responded "Money?" 💵

She immediately ended the call, and left me wondering

Is there any other way to respond to this?

Interview Question - Ask to observe an upcoming Career Fair that I would manage if hired

Hello all,

I have an interview tomorrow for an employer partnership position at a University. I also noticed the same day of my interview, there is a internship fair for the school later that day...this is something I would manage if I was hired for the job. I'm curious if it would be seen as proactive or aggressive if I mention this at the end of my interview during my questions..."I noticed you have an internship fair today. I'd love the opportunity to come and silently observe as I think it would be an advantage to learn from the event if I was to be hired for this role."

Not sure if that's crazy or not but there's not any other upcoming events in the calendar and it truly would be helpful to see it - it wouldn't be just for brownie points, but I get how that's not a traditional part of the interview process....Is it weird even to ask?

Rejected for a senior role, but VP and hiring manager still want to find me a place—how should I take this?

Hi everyone,

Almost 2 months ago I applied for a financial analyst role at a reputable company in the Netherlands and had an interview with the hiring manager that went surprisingly well - I only spoke 10 for minutes and he spoke for 50 minutes, it felt very casual and it was almost as if he was selling both the role and the company to me saying that my profile is very interesting and that the company should capitalise hiring young and ambitious people like me.

Fast forward a week and I was rejected on the base of not being senior enough for this role which I wasn’t surprised about, but he and the VP both thought it would be a good idea to have a coffee and discuss my ambitions.

Yesterday I had the coffee with them and met the VP for the first time, again they were positive about my profile and whether I’d be interested in working in Finance as part of another domain to which I was positive and they want to plug/refer me to the director of that domain (currently she still reports into the VP but this domain will be separated as of next week).

My question is how should I take all of this? Truth to be told, I never really had to interview for ‘adult’ jobs apart from my internships, for reference I work for a big FMCG company that I interned at and they offered me a role right after University - and now that I had an interview I feel I barely elaborated on my skill set and experiences as part of my current role yet I seem to be getting their support which I do really appreciate as they didn’t need to do this at all. For context, I’m currently at 3 years of full time work experience.
