Applied for a job I didn’t get last year and got invited back again

Last year I applied for a job. Got an interview did well, then got invited back to do a hands on test. (I work in the industrial field) didn’t get the job. Got a rejection from HR saying they wanna keep me in mind if other opportunities pop up. 1.5 year later they reopened the position and I applied again. Got invited back once again for an interview , and just did my hands on test again yesterday( only 3 people tested) . Same panel and supervision as last time also , so it was familiar faces. Said they were impressed with me last time just wanted more experience. But now I’m just currently waiting till next week to hear a decision and I feel like I did much better this go around. Has anyone had this experience or wanna share their opinion on that they think?

How to gain confidence in interview?

Hi everyone,

I have been attending interviews recently after graduation, but I am struggling to succeed. I have the knowledge, but I find it difficult to express myself. I get confused and often get stuck during the interviews. Despite my efforts to practice, nothing seems to work, and I’m feeling really demotivated.

Does anyone have suggestions or guidance on how I can overcome this?

Why am I not getting interviews?

Hello, I need to know if anyone else is having this issue? I have applied to numerous jobs, about 17 to be exact. Some have been remote positions, which I understand every one wants right now but a lot have been in my hometown. I have only received two calls back to interview. I used to get calls no matter what for at least an interview. I have revamped my resume in hopes to get some calls. Is anyone else having this problem? WHY?!?! I am getting so frustrated.

TY!

Waiting on email

So I had a quick phone interview on Monday for a job I applied to. Asking simple question like why I applied and if the schedule and location works for me. I think it went well and the person interviewing me said if they decide to move forward I would most likely receive an email Tuesday or Wednesday regarding scheduling a zoom interview with the hiring manager. It's now Wednesday and I haven't received anything yet. Should I worry?

Short Interview

Hey everyone, I hope you all are doing well. I just had an interview for human resources Assistant position (contract/3 months). Just few days ago, I had a phone call interview and it went really well, but when it came to video call interview it was more like rapid fire questions. The interview lasted for 15 minute max. Does short Interview means rejection?

I just got two very ironic declines after the presentation stage…

Both were senior product manager, AI roles. I was a data scientist for a couple years before switching to product and have always worked with AI/ML products. It’s been a very long time since I did data science and also things have obviously changed a lot since then too (even since my last job!). Adding that to say my background is really a mix of technical and business and I understand both sides.

Anyway both companies I made it to a round where I had to present the biggest product opportunity for each company and how I’d prioritize the roadmap. I basically used the same presentation for each because I don’t have a ton of free time (with slight tweaks for each company).

I got declines from both companies, which is fine, not the roles for me then! But the feedback I got is 🤣. One company said I was too technical. The other company said I wasn’t technical enough. I mean I gave essentially the same presentation (and of course in my opinion, it was the right balance in terms of business/technical and for a PM, but will reevaluate if I go through this again). Obviously the people I presented to and the companies themselves are the variables. But this is just the craziest market and I have to laugh sometimes.

Better Job offer right after starting a new job?

TL;DR - got a better job offer right after starting a new job in the same industry, any advice on whether and how to tell the new company that I had started a new role would be appreciated.

I started a new job in 2 months ago at a large company. It’s fine, but not amazing, and I took it mostly because other interviews at the time didn’t pan out.

2 weeks after I started, another company in the same industry reached out about a role I had applied to (2 months before I started my current job). The role is more senior, pays meaningfully more, and seems like a better fit overall. I thought, why not take the interview and just see.

Weeks after the final interview - today they told me I’m a finalist and basically said they’re preparing an offer. They also asked me to confirm what I’d be giving up (bonus, stock, etc.) so they can factor that into compensation and “buy me out” if needed.

Here’s my dilemma: the application and resume they have on file are from April, before I started my current job. I never updated them because I had literally just started and didn’t think it would matter. Also I didn’t bring it up in the interviews bc I was like I don’t want them to not interview me. Now I’m unsure if I should “come clean” that I started a new role in late June.

If I want to get paid out for the sign-on bonus and a small partial annual bonus, I’d have to mention that I had started a new job. That said, I don’t care about this as much as the new job offer.

If I don’t tell them, it might look odd when they run a background check or ask for documentation. I do think I would be able to opt out of the automated services though and provide documentation separately, but there’s a possibility that the people at my current company would find out (and vice versa) down the road.

So my question is: how risky is it if I disclose this now vs. if I don’t? Would it hurt me to say, “I had just started a role when we reconnected, but this one is a much better fit so I’d be excited to move forward”? Or is it cleaner to just keep it simple and only bring it up if asked?

Would you continue with this?

Hi all. I answered an ad on Indeed yesterday for a "confidential" company. They answered my resume and want to do video interview today. After seeing the man's name and the address, my fantastic memory popped into gear. After questioning him, I have realized this is the same man I was referred to 2 years ago.

2 years ago, I was referred by a colleague at that time. The man's wife spoke with me first, and she managed to reveal that they were replacing their "older bookkeeper with health problems and bad personality". I thought 'Fuck you bitch', to myself at the time. I'm also an older bookkeeper and I've got arthritis in my hips. I've managed to confirm I have the right people in question. I'm supposed to zoom with him later today. He says he does not recall our chat, but I recall speaking with him in the parking lot of the place that referred me.

Would you proceed with this interview fully knowing what God wife to me 2 years ago? It was so uncaring, that it resonates with me to this day. I think I'll just tell him my reasons and pass.

I just got canned from a job yesterday that I barely started. But I don't want to go from bad to worse right off the bat.

And since he's running his ad as confidential that means he's not retaining anyone in this job in less than 2 years.

Thoughts?

An hour after the interview the job posting was taken down. Is this a good sign?

Interview felt more like interrogation?

Idk I had other interviews mostly remote and all of them were very conversational. Today’s interview at my dream company felt like an interrogation.

I just went with the flow and tried to sound conversational but boy i never experienced this.

The interviewer was also late. Idk they were very cold. I also want to say that I wasnt the most qualified for this position but I mean I got an interview so they certainly saw something in me?!

Help for technical interviews

Hi everyone, I’m an international student and have been applying for full-time roles for the past 4 months, but unfortunately haven’t had much success. I was wondering if there are any AI tools or platforms that could help with things like interview prep, resume optimization, or overall job applications.

If you’ve tried any and found them useful, I’d really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks in advance!

An Interview of Red Flags

This happened around 10 years ago but it still baffles me to this day. So I thought I would share.

I was 23 and had just graduated with a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from a good English university. Due to a parent getting sick and passing away in my final year, I didn't apply to any graduate schemes and was suddenly thrust into the shark pit that is Engineering entry level positions.

I was scared and took the first interview I was offered, at a company that designed insulation for machinery.

Bought myself a suit and drove over. When I arrived, to my surprise there were loads of other graduates also there. Red flag number 1.

I spoke to the receptionist and was told that I needed to take "the exam" before I was "allowed" to interview. Exam?! I started sweating buckets, I was not told about any exam and I began to panic thinking of all I had forgotten in the 2 months since I finished my degree.

I was led into a room filled with other hopeful grads and I sat down and opened the paper.

It was 50 multiple choice questions... -What is the largest ocean? -Who was the first American president? -If you have 20 sheep and all but 4 die, how many sheep do you have? -Draw an isosceles triangle.

I was a bit stunned at the choice of questions but finished up, handed in my paper and after 10 minutes I was "permitted" to take the interview.

I entered a room and was greeted by the Head of the Company and the Head of HR. We did some introductions, sat down and the CEO said. "I am very disappointed in you" I was taken aback, "I'm sorry, what?" "You scored 49/50, the highest result so far on our exam. But the question you got wrong is appalling for someone wanting a career in engineering."

He flipped the paper round and pounded his finger on a question. It was a maths equation but written badly. 3x4÷2+7x8 or the like.

"Explain yourself"

I looked at the answer again, maybe I had made a mistake, but no it was correct. I told him my answer was right.

"How could you possibly get that answer" "I used BODMAS" (PEMDAS for my American friends) "I have never heard of that, everyone knows you go left to right." I argued my case but was met with a smug "we will agree to disagree" Another red flag.

We moved on and he told me about the company and how they manufactured insulation rated from -500C (-868f) to 1000C (1832f). I must've made a face because he asked me what's wrong.

"-500C is impossible" "Well our cutting edge technology makes that possible" "No, it's actually physically impossible for anything to go below -273C"

He threw down his pen clearly annoyed. "What if I said I will call our Engineering chief right now? Would you stand behind that statement?" I said "go for it"

This poor guy was dialled in on speaker and confirmed that a) BODMAS was an actual thing b) nothing can go below -273.15C c) their top tier insulation definitely cant go to -500C

Boy did the interviewer look pissed.

We wrapped up after 10 more minutes where he gave clipped responses to all my questions. I was asked to wait again in reception "in case there were any follow up questions"

After 5 mins I thought, screw it, I am out of here. I thanked the receptionist and left.

As I was reversing my Mum's VW Polo out to leave there was a big knock on the window and my interviewer was stood there. I wound down the window confused and he said "Just wanted to let you know, you have the job, I will call you tomorrow to discuss when you will start" After all the song and dance earlier, I was quite surprised. "No thank you, I'm going to explore other opportunities" He looked so hurt, and I remember him staring daggers at me, hands on hips as I drove away as fast as I could.

The whole thing was just so bizarre and there were so many moments where I should have just packed up and left. I'm now happily a Senior Engineer at a big engineering company, but I wonder time to time how miserable I would've been if I had said yes to my horrible first interview.

How long should someone wait to reach out about possible next steps?

I'm trying to gauge a range on how long I should wait before I reach out to the potential employer? I know it's a holiday weekend coming up and people may be on vacation and I also don't want to seem impatient.

Update: I saw that the position was reposted and now I'm nervous. I know that some postings automatically repost but 😭

Follow up call with hiring manager after final interview

I had a final round interview nearly two weeks ago for a manager position. This morning, the hiring manager (who is director level) emailed me directly asking if I’m available to connect by phone or Zoom later today.

HR had previously mentioned there were only two finalists, so I assumed I’d hear either way by now. This unexpected follow-up feels significant.

One detail: this director also oversees two vacant specialist roles under the manager, which they hadn’t planned to hire until the manager was in place. There’s a chance they may be offering one of those roles instead, though I don’t know for sure. Maybe I’m just doubting the more likely outcome which is they offer me the job I applied for.

For those with experience: when a director reaches out like this after final interviews, is it typically to extend an offer (of some kind)? Or could it still be a rejection? Curious what others have experienced in this type of situation.

Didn’t get the job after completing final interview - rejected by a “no-reply” email

This post is really just to vent and to take any advice you all have to give. But yesterday I received an automated rejection email from a company I had been interviewing with the entire month of August. I met every single one of their requirements, and nailed all the interviews, even making it to the final round.

I work in HR, so I know how important it is to find a culture match. I truly felt a strong match to this organization and really enjoyed everyone on the team that I met. But to be sent a “no-reply” felt like SUCH a slap in the face.

I ended up asking the recruiter directly if there was any feedback, and she literally said “there’s no feedback to provide, best of luck in your search!”

I’m at a loss. I’m so discouraged. I’ve been unemployed for a year. I’m 30. I want to start my life. I want a house with a yard for my dog, to start a family with my boyfriend at some point in the near future, etc.

I just don’t know what it is about me that is making companies just interview me and end up going a different direction last minute.

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Akamai Interview - confirm if it's a red flag

I was being interviewed for the role of Product Manager at Akamai. Initially, I was told that there will be 4 rounds of interview - HM, Tech, Stakeholder and Leadership round. My first three rounds were over. It's been 2 weeks and I am yet to hear about the last round(leadership round). I reached out to the HR, but unfortunately I didn't recieve any response. Should I remain hopeful? as 2 weeks have already passed since the last interview.

To the HR's in this subreddit, Why do you really ask questions that doesn't really matter to the job role?

I had an interview today. The technical manager and the hr were in the call the whole time.

The technical manager asked questions, most of which I answered properly. But he had a very condescending tone whenever I admitted that I don't know much about something as I'm still learning it. But this is something I face all the time. I never minded that.

But next up the HR started asking me questions about my strengths and weakness. Classic.

Then asked me about the person that inspires me, about the books I read, what I learnt from those, my favorite moment from my childhood and whole lot of questions like these. And also following up those answers with another question.

This went on for so long, to the point where I had to share too many infos about my personal stuffs. I'm not sure if that's supposed to happen, but I didn't have any professional answers to those questions.

Can anyone here please tell me what are they trying to understand from these questions?

How to prepare for an engineering case study interview

Hey everyone, this is my first post here so I appreciate all the help and insights.

I finally moved to the final interview of an engineering consulting company and they told me it will be held by two engineers in the team and will start with some introductions and then a case study to mimick what they do with clients.

It's their Marine engineering department that work in ports development. I just finished my masters with no work experience and it's a Junior role.

How to prepare for the case study? What should I expect? They told me I will have 10-15 minutes to prepare and 30 minutes to discuss, how much should I ask questions and clarify because I don't want to look clueless. Any general advice is appreciated. Thank you all!
