I made it onto a ceili team! Since I’m a guy I wasn’t going to be able to do an 8 hand as there need to be at least two men, and I’m the only boy in my age bracket at me school. But my coach was able to get me into a 4 hand last minute!! And I’m going to a trad set! Also I’d like to start a petition to remove gender based rules in ceili team, do you think people would sign it?

Not that the category of mix shouldn’t exist but rather that for an 8 hand there is a rule that if there are males it must consist of 25-75% that means that if you are the only male in your age category at your school you can’t compete in 8 hand. This rule also only exists for u18 and under. This rule also applies to 4 hand but it is less of a problem

Ahhh I see what you mean- As an adult I think it's a different situation, cause there were some teams with only one male, but our 8-hand had two men and they were the only ones- our three four-hands were all women this past year. No idea how it'll pan out this year.

All of the top 8 teams that placed in that competition were all female teams.
It is about the dancing and figure work. Any advantage to having men is marginal at best.
Irish dance judging has some inherent subjectivity, but that shows up in minor ways, a team that one judge scores as 1st another judges as 3rd.
It does not turn a 5th place team into the 28th place team.

This also seems like another problem of sexism, I truly believe that girls have the advantage when it comes to Irish dance due to anatomy. so the fact that the male teams that where worse scored better goes to show how messed up the judging is.

Newly returning to dance after a 16 year break and jumped up to the champ class and learned a hornpipe step this week. I’m in a lot of pain but it’s fun!
