Transportation to island Isle Royale /to/ Canada?

I apologize in advance if I am asking a stupid question. My brother and I are planning a trip later in the year to get drysuit certified and dive Lake Superior. We thought it might also be cool to take a boat or seaplane to Isle Royale after we were done with all that, to both see the lake and hike around the island a bit. Since are rarely so far north we also wondered if we might be able to venture into Canada from there (provided COVID restrictions are loosened and they are acceptant of our vaccinations etc). Are there any such services? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

You would need to take the ferry to Grand Portage, Minnesota first and then travel to Canada. Since there’s no US Customs and Border Protection on Isle Royale there’s no way to travel directly from Canada and vise versa.

You can clear customs at Windigo. We've done it when boating from Canada to Windigo

Really? I never knew that. I guess I didn’t consider boaters. Can US citizens clear Canadian Customs going from IR to Grand Portage or Thunder Bay as well?

Yes canadian customs can clear you, it can actually be done through a phone call which is pretty slick

Private charters are not allowed. They must have a CUA to provide service to the island
