meta/community Poll on Banning Post Types

There have been several popular posts recently suggesting that more posts should be removed. The mod team's response has generally been "Those posts aren't against the rules - what rule are you suggesting we add?"

Still, we understand the frustration. This has always been a "catch all" sub for IT related posts, but that doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't have stricter standards. Let us know in the poll or comments what you would like to see.

11 Change nothing, the current rules are good.
3 Just ban all meme/joke posts.
10 Just ban tech support posts (some or all).
2 Just ban "advice" requests (some or all).
22 Just ban/discourage low effort posts, in general.
11 Ban a combination of these things, or something else.

Some steps for getting into IT

We see a lot of questions within the r/IT community asking how to get into IT, what path to follow, what is needed, etc. For everyone it is going to be different but there is a similar path that we can all take to make it a bit easier.

If you have limited/no experience in IT (or don't have a degree) it is best to start with certifications. CompTIA is, in my opinion, the best place to start. Following in this order: A+, Network+, and Security+. These are a great place to start and will lay a foundation for your IT career.

There are resources to help you earn these certificates but they don't always come cheap. You can take CompTIA's online learning (live online classroom environment) but at $2,000 USD, this will be cost prohibitive for a lot of people. CBT Nuggets is a great website but it is not free either (I do not have the exact price). You can also simply buy the books off of Amazon. Fair warning with that: they make for VERY dry reading and the certification exams are not easy (for me they weren't, at least).

After those certifications, you will then have the opportunity to branch out. At that time, you should have the knowledge of where you would like to go and what IT career path you would like to pursue.

I like to stress that a college/university degree is NOT necessary to get into the IT field but will definitely help. What degree you choose is strictly up to you but I know quite a few people with a computer science degree.

Most of us (degree or not) will start in a help desk environment. Do not feel bad about this; it's a great place to learn and the job is vital to the IT department. A lot of times it is possible to get into a help desk role with no experience but these roles will limit what you are allowed to work on (call escalation is generally what you will do).

Please do not hesitate to ask questions, that is what we are all here for.

I would encourage my fellow IT workers to add to this post, fill in the blanks that I most definitely missed.

jobs and hiring I passed 6 test just to be basically rejected :)

Man, the IT world is fucked. I wish I am able to post this here, if not then I will delete, I just wanted to share my first experience trying to land an entry level IT job.

So... I was trying to be a service desk agent, pretty basic job but since I am still finalizing my thesis for computer science and coding was never my strongest area I thought it was cool. I received a email back, we went back and forth for a little until the day of the first interview happened.

I passed the first interview without much problems. Then they left me psychometric test, I kid you not, they were in total like 500 different questions for those test. I guess I passed it cause they called me to a polygraph, I did the polygraph but from there they sent me to do a drug test... I need to say, that was the most HUMILIATING things I have ever done. I had to pee on a cup with a woman watching me so I didn't do anything to cheat on the drug exam (I don't even have a clue how you can cheat in something like that, but whatever)

Then, couple of days after, I passed that one too cause they called me for an interview with a security analyst, they made me the exact same questions that the polygraph man did.

I PASSED THAT AND STILL they needed another test to prove my English knowledge. The English test was middle school type of garbage so I am sure I passed it...

Couple of days go by, today I get the information, that they're """"sorry"""" but the company I had applied for decided randomly to "FREEZE" the position I was applying to (they kinda offered something else but at this point I am starting to think I don't want to waste more time with them)

And later on the day, I noticed randomly, on the same page they contacted me from, a job offer for the same service desk position BUT with the company information marked as "confidential"... Just that HR fucked up and left the name of the company in the middle of the offering so basically... They're already searching for new candidates for their "freezed" position šŸ™ƒ

Not only I am PISSED for how much time they made me waste, they couldn't even reject me properly or at least give me a reason WHY, I was not good enough for their shit position... Really the IT world is fucked...

help request Looking for a mouse jiggler/timer solution to keep Teams active for a few extra mins

I’ve just started a new job & it’s a bit stricter about lunch breaks than my last role. At my old company, I could drop the kids off at school and pick them up without needing to make the time up. In this new role, I have to use my lunch hour:

15 mins to drop them off 15 mins for lunch 30 mins to collect them

It technically works, but the 15 mins in the morning means I’m power walking so fast I’m basically dragging my 6-year-old because he can’t keep up. So 20 mins would be comfortable.

What I’m after is a mouse jiggler with a timer — something that will just keep my Teams status ā€œactiveā€ for another 5 mins after I leave the house in the morning. I don’t want it to run the whole time (that would look suspicious), I just need those extra 5 mins before it flips to Away.

Anyone know if there’s a tool or gadget that can do that?

jobs and hiring Is this a temp to hire thing or am I just a cheap solution?

I applied for this government IT helpdesk job back in November. Had an interview, didn't get it. In April the person who interviewed me asked if I could come into to do some work that no one in the department had time to do. Because I referenced automation on my resume, they wanted me to try tackling it. They needed me to take a zip file of 7000 files and have them uniformly named and uploaded to their new website. After working on it for a few weeks, I found out that they were missing 8,000 more files. After a process, I managed to get all 15,000 files uniformly named and uploaded to their new website. They then wanted me to back up all the 700 articles on their old website, which, compared to the 15,000 files, was a breeze.

Then they wanted me to take a look at their previous data analysts python scripts and find out why they no longer worked. I was pretty much surprised into a meeting with everyone who worked in the IT department who wasn't helpdesk. The problem was pretty easy to identify, the script was (attempting) to pull updated data from a server, but the credentials were wrong. The current data analyst somehow wasn't able to identify this problem in 2 years.

They flip flopped around with what they wanted to do next. First they told me they wanted me to come in and fix the old scripts, and then they told me they wanted to start from scratch, and then they wanted to fix the old scripts and then start from scratch. So I started from scratch based on their specifications and delivered a script that they wanted. I then offered to give them the script so that they could run it on their own and they told me that they were going to be sending me the data once a month for me to run myself.

Im not sure if this was a test, because the following week they sent me the data again but this time it was missing a crucial row and the script had to be modified. I didn't expect this so I told them that when I had the new data id have the new report to them shortly. Took me a few hours to fix the problem but I got it to them the same day.

In light of all this, they told me that after they hire this position (a position that had been posted since June) that they were going to post a position that they want me to then apply to. Last time I had a meeting with them they essentially told me that they were about to hire someone. Shortly after the job posting came down, so I assume that they hired this person. Since then I have heard nothing and this was three weeks ago.

I have had their laptop (since I havent been to the office since that last meeting) for over 3 months and they haven't asked for it back. They also have been telling me to complete the cyber security training.

All in all, I am very conflicted. This job would be such a huge upgrade from my other job that I feel like I have to ride it out all the way to the end and see whats going to happen.

TL;DR- Been doing work for an IT department that seems valued and possibly hinted at me being temp-to-perm but it is a slow process and I am not really quite sure whats happening.

help request Learning about Kinaxis RapidResponse with an Aerospace lense

Hey there, yall

I’m sorry if this isn’t the place for this post, but I’m trying to do what I can to learn and make an effort to grow. I also put this same post in Aerospace as I’m trying to learn more about

I’m new in recruiting in IT, and I’ve been doing a lot of recruiting within A&D.

I’m hoping to learn more about IT landscapes across the board within Aerospace as I think it would help me in my efforts.

I can do all of the googling I want, but I fear that I lack the conceptual understanding to really digest the information I read.

I’m currently working on a high level RapidResponse role for a client of ours and I really want to understand how it is utilized in an A&D environment and why companies would choose to use it over something like Blue Yonder or like IBPB within SAP?

help request Microwave cuts out WiFi signal*

I’m really curious as to what’s happening here. We use our microwave multiple times a day, however the only time our WiFi cuts out is when we are sterilising baby bottles.

I’ve had the microwave on a defrost setting for 20 minutes and it didn’t affect WiFi at all. But every time we do a 3 minute sterilise everything in the house looses connection.

Hoping someone might know why

opinion Is it really a requirement to have a Gaming Laptop for Coding?

Hello, I am a 1st Year IT student located in the Philippines. My Aunt bought me a brand new laptop from the US, and it's an HP 14" 2025 version with the Intel N150 processor. Now I know that Intel Celerons are not really that good, and my classmates are telling me that my Aunt should've bought me a Gaming laptop instead of an HP.

May I ask, can it handle my daily needs like using VS Code, MS Teams, M365 Suite, and light games like Roblox?
it has 16GB of DDR4 RAM, though I am not really sure.

help request IT Project for Apprenticeship

Hey,

i am currently doing an Apprenticeship in Austria. I am now coming to the Final Class and we need to now make an IT Project and present it at the end of the year for the grade.

I have been thinking a bit about what exactly what i wanna do. After i while i decided that a want to make a VDI Solution. Something like Citrix. But obviously i dont want to pay for stuff because in the end it's just a school project which will serve no purpose after i got the grade. I have already asked ChatGPT but i didnt feel like i got a good answer.

Anyone know how i could make the project work?

help request laptop recommendations for IT professionals

Hello friends. I'm a manager at a not-for-profit org, we've historically used subcontractors for IT support but it's not working out so we've hired an IT support specialist. I'm looking to provision a higher-end laptop than we typically provide to our staff. I've asked around and the consensus appears to be that a Lenovo ThinkPad T14 is the best choice but I'm wondering if that's correct or if there is a cheaper option. I'm assuming an Intel i5 with 16 GB RAM will be sufficient but please correct me if I'm wrong.

The employee will primarily be providing in-person tech support for desktop mini PCs, laptops, printers etc.

any advice is appreciated!

opinion Do not give up on getting into IT

I know that things seem impossible rn when it comes to IT but it's not. I went to school for 3 years for IT, but I didn't get a degree only certifications. Once I got out I thought I was screwed and I was searching for a long time for any position that would take me. This continued for 3 months I was considering becoming an electrician when I finally got an offer. If IT is what you care about dont get discouraged bc your field feels like it's dying. Its not you just need to get lucky once.

For those that are looking to get into the field for money, please reconsider. At this point there are easier (mentally) roles to get into with higher pay.

Sorry I'm being intentionally vague for privacy purposes.

help request Ricoh Spring Framework outdated on print-Server

Hello fellow IT-Guys,

So we have been told by IT-Security to either delete or Update an outdated Spring-Core.jar on several print-Servers. Now I have read different stuff about it but I am not Sure how to proceed.

The filepath is "C:\ProgramData\Ricoh\@Remote Connector NX\configuration\dm\org.eclipse.osgi\68\0.cp\lib\spring-core-3.0.6.RELEASE.jar"

Has anybody any experience with this? It's also very crucial that we don't have any outage here, so a very cautious way to approach this would be best.

Thanks in advance!

opinion How would you structure a Bachelors in IT Degree?

I recently graduated from university and started my first full-time job & man, is it like drinking through a firehose trying to learn so many fundamentals my schooling failed to provide. I feel like schools could & should do a better job of providing a good foundation of knowledge for their students.

So my question is, how would you go about structuring an IT degree? What would be your semester breakdown of topics and in what order would you structure it?

help request Remote access/Drive cloning/vpn

Hello, first Reddit post. Long time viewer, big reader, bigger fan. I’ve got a task, marginal progression, and no hard solutions. To start, here’s my problem, as well as a brief outline: I need to run a report in a particular program every week after 8pm on Saturday, or at some point Sunday. My work is mostly physical on my end, I use my computer for documentation and clocking hours. I don’t handle sensitive information personal, but because people in our company do, we have pretty restricted access in my eyes across the board. Department heads have the only take home laptops that require a VPN connection to access this program, otherwise it only works on our native WiFi and/or Ethernet. Running this report is important to me and my team as it is the only way to verify our proper compensation, and working M-F I have to go in every weekend after work hours to run said report. The program itself is very basic, I’ve checked for any means of scheduling said report to run on its own, there is not. In order to start said program you must either be on the local network or in via VPN. I have copied my computer entirely onto a spare hard drive, and booted my personal laptop from it, at work it operated as intended once, although I was on the local network and hadn’t quite figured out the vpn yet, but on second log in, IT must’ve automatically flagged me as it now said my organization severed its relationship with said computer. My only thoughts now is maybe I can try a remote access approach? I can download programs without admin access but I cannot change settings on the native Microsoft remote access feature. Another issue is my computer would likely be asleep, however I can figure out ways around that if i can indeed establish remote access, I do know a WOLan function will not work in my case. Any help appreciated. Novice computer guy here who just knows enough to be difficult for his local IT department

help request Keeping a young person safe online, please help

Hey, so my best best friend has a 3 year old. He’s incredibly un-tech savvy(father has a traumatic brain injury, and the best father imaginable but has short comings when facing raising a kid in the digital age), and I’m a little worried about his child’s presence online. Can some of you please give me tips to help protect his child’s online?

Things are moving so fast I find it hard to keep up, let alone a single father trying to work and provide for his child. Any advice is welcome and extremely appreciated! (Note: he’s not doing anything crazy I just want his kid safe and anyway from any dangers especially since his father is so tech illiterate)

Thank you in advance
