Community Discussion Community discussion: Moderators and subreddit direction

Hey everyone, /u/iammandalore here. I recently noticed that the sub wasn't being actively moderated, and went through the process to request the sub. After a few days, I was granted ownership of the sub as the head moderator. I'm also a mod over on /r/BJJ.

I have no intention of turning this sub into a carbon copy of /r/BJJ. I want to know what the members here want to see most from this sub. One thing I've noticed a lot of is "Is thIs stAph/rIngwOrm/cAULIfLOwEr whAt dO I dO gUys?" posts with pictures of open sores and the like. I want to make those go away. Gross.

Beyond that, what do you guys want to see more or less of here? How do you want this place to differ from /r/BJJ? What do other BJJ-related subs have that you don't want here or vice versa? I'm open to opinions.

I'm also looking for a few good men, women, or if necessary, subhuman white belts who are interested in moderating. There's work to be done just moderating day-to-day posts and comments, as well as tweaking automod, editing the wiki, updating the look and feel, etc. If you're interested, shoot me a DM with what you think you could add as a member of the moderation team.

So let's hear it. What do you people want?

Tips for improvement?

I am the one in the headgear. Recently had an absolute in house tournament as a 4th stripe white belt and looking to improve my game and stop getting smeshed lol. My opponent was a mid tier blue belt who wrestled for a while. Take a look and let me know thank you!

Beginner with retina concerns

Upvotes

I have moderate myopia, Drs have always warned me of possible retinal tears or detachments. Is bjj right for me? I’m excited to train, but worried i’ll end up injuring my eyes. Anyone with a similar experience?

first day at a jiujitsu class and one of the guys threw a punch at his partner

is this normal? i was standing on the side of the mat watching 2 guys wrestle. i forgot my robe at home so the coach just told me to observe the class.

anyways while the 2 guys were wrestling, one of them ended up on their back, while the OTHER guy was on HIS back, on top of the guy with his back to the ground. weirdest shit i ever saw. so the guy on the ground proceeds to wrap his legs around the guy on top of him and then starts attempting to do a choke. for some reason the guy on the bottom with the advantage was giggling the whole time and would giggle more manically the harder the guy on top struggled to fight the choke.

eventually he fully got the choke in and started kissing the guy on top of his head as he fought for his life. the choke recipient ended up tapping out and as the choke giver let go and stood up he said something pretty weird along the lines of “now that’s how i like to party”

the guy who got choked was already furious from the constant giggling in his ear so he threw a haymaker at the giggle guy. it didn’t land but it was close. giggle guy instantly changes his tone and seemed a bit confused and said “come on man we were just having fun.” the punch thrower stormed out of the gym without saying anything and giggle guy threw his hands up at me in like a “you seeing this shit?” kinda way.

all in all it was an interesting first day of jiu jitsu. my question is does stuff like this happen a lot in bjj? i would eventually like to wrestle but i don’t know if id wanna do it with the giggle guy

Solo Training

Hey Guys, is it possible to train BJJ solo with Just a Grappling Dummy and Some of John Danaher’s Beginner Training Videos, in my Area MMA gyms are going up in price so I figured to get his free beginners guide and practice the basics. Some gyms allow open on certain days so I can practice what I’ve seen at least once a week.

Rolling partner popped my elbow even though I tapped and I threw a punch after. AITAH

Edit: Yes, this is a shitpost in reaction to this post which was deleted.

https://www.reddit.com/r/jiujitsu/s/EjtWAq0HJi

————————|————————

Was rolling with a dude who got me in a nasty super fast armbar. I immediately tapped but he just cranked it harder. I tapped again really hard against his legs and also gave a verbal tap. It was almost like he took that as a signal to crank harder. I heard and felt an audible pop in my elbow, and only then did he release.

Somehow in the frustration and anger at having my taps ignored and feeling the injury happen I just lost my temper. I threw a punch that had no target and no real intention to injure. Suddenly he started acting all cool like nothing happened and tried to shake my hand and mumbled something about never rolling with me again lol.

I went to the coach and told him what happened and he said yeah he has a history of thinking everything is porrada. He said he’s told him before to tone it down but it’s been hard for him.

(Don’t know where the shitpost tag is)

Too much muscle

I've been doing Jiu Jitsu for about 1.5 years and prior to this I was an avid bodybuilder for nearly 20 years.

One thing I've noticed is that my muscle mass really exhausts me compared to rolling with someone half my size who (at the same or lower belt level) destroys me in. They are much faster and have more gas in the tank.

Any advice? Should I just lose weight? lose muscle mass? change my strategy to move less? im not really sure how to get better at getting faster and not gassing out.

To work, or to let them work?

Female, 5’2, 120lb no stripe purple belt

After recently being promoted and coming back from a long break, I’m starting to see the codes in the matrix. When I’m rolling with the lower belt females i now have the skills to be aggressive and smash them (ironic, I know) control them and gain submissions. I feel bad for doing this all the time though and have been letting them get positions occasionally with half resistance from me and gain submissions to boost their confidence. I can see on their faces the satisfaction, which is something I never got when I was coming up through the ranks. Some of them even puff up a little and give me little snide remarks about me needing to brush up on stuff, but it doesn’t bother me because when I put the pressure on and they say “woah, you’re getting so good.”

However, I got feedback the other day from coach that I need to stop letting people put me in bad positions and fighting my way out from there. I fear that now I see that this has become part of my game and a way for me to reconcile my shitty guard defense, which I will work on, but is it fair to completely lock out the lower belts and not let them work on submissions?

So what’s the answer to this? 50% smash and 50% let them work? 60/40? Situational?

For those of you purple and above, what is your approach to this?

Constantly getting partnered with two other people and it’s extremely frustrating and I feel like I’m not learning anything every class that happens

find one of the most annoying things to be when there is an odd number of people and it just always works out to be me and two other guys practicing. It feels like such a waste of class to be doing 1/3 of what you normally would with just one partner, it has to be the most frustrating experience in BJJ, and it just so happens that I always get the one dude who doesn’t have a partner paired with me and my partner. What do you guys do to deal with this?

To the guys who have to partner with a female classmate, thank you.

I go to a wonderful gym with a VERY mixed (in age and sex) class, and extremely professional coaches. USUALLY there is another female student for me to do technique practice wirh. The times there aren't, im always filled with anxiety--until we get going and the guy is kind, understanding, and professional. I know you "get it" better than I do.(I am a clumsy "Disney princess" raised woman who has terrible proprioception), but you don't disparage me for it; you do your best to make it feel like we are both just learning (even way higher belts than mine[white, obvz]), and i always DO learn something. You guys are the best.

"Which belt was the hardest for you, and why?"

Every belt in BJJ feels like a completely different challenge. Some say white to blue is the toughest, others think purple is the biggest grind.

  • For you, which belt was the hardest to earn?
  • Was it because of the technical jump, motivation, injuries, or something else?
  • Looking back, would you do anything differently during that phase?

Anyone roll with a beard?

Got injured had to take 4 months out typical blue belt turned into 8 months, grew a nice beard heading back to the mats wondering if I need to cut it or not looking at getting back to competition in a few months. My kids crawling over me fucking yank it with knees and elbows sometimes that’s what triggered this thought. Any long beards out there or no?

Haven’t been to BJJ in a couple months

Blue belt here. Haven’t been to jiu jitsu since June. My life got fucked up for a while and I just didn’t really care about it and pretty much lost interest in everything else as well. Planning on going tonight, but already feel myself wanting to bail. I know I’m going to get smoked on the mats, and life’s been hard enough lately. But I don’t want to quit on myself and also become the stereotypical blue belt that’s quits.

Post encouragement or talk shit below…

What do I need to get started?

I'm starting Brazilian jiujitsu here in a couple weeks and I wanna know what equipment I need to have before the first class.

1) I hear you can go a few weeks without a GI but you need a mouth guard up front, is this generally true?

2) anything special about what type of mouth guard?

3) can I just wear shorts and a t shirt or do I need some rashguards?

4) when I do buy a GI, how does the sizing work? Is it one size fits most and roll the hems if they're too short?

Competition

Hi everyone, I'm a white belt hitting my first competition in two weeks and I'm pretty excited! I've been on the mats for about six months now, training 2-3 times a week. I'm hoping to get some last-minute advice from all of you who have been there before. What are some things you wish you knew before your first competition? My plan is to go in, have fun, put my training to the test and hopefully come out with a win. Thanks in advance!

As the title says, I'm moving to brazil in a couple of months. Specifically Rio

Any recommended school in there? I train for over 9 years. I don't want to be a world champion but I do want a high level school. Thanks in advance
