Career planning Some advice as someone who lived through the Great Recession.

The Trump economy and the AI bubble is reminding me so much of 2008. So here is some advice from a person who made some big mistakes back then

Don't quit your job unless you have a sure thing lined up.

If you are in the public sector and are thinking about going to the private sector, don't do it.

Focus on maintaining a stable position above all things.

Evaluations I FUCKING HATE WORKING IN FAST FOOD (Tim Hortons)

[19/F] I work at a Tim Hortons in Canada and I absolutely hate it, people lack basic manners!!!! The managers are mean AND the customers are MEAN, everybody is so RUDE! :c Not to mention the fact that like 70% of the customers that come into Tim Hortons are literally foreigners that can barely speak english/cant speak english at all. I don't have a problem with foreigners, infact; my parents are from Hokkaido. I was born here in Canada. The problem starts when the customers are actively getting mad at me because I can barely understand what they're saying!! It gets even worse in the drive-thru. The mics are shitty and when their accent is thick, I genuienly cant understand a single word they're saying to me!!

tldr: fast food is just not for the weak and I am weak

Post-interview Rejected from my dream job

Has this happened to anyone else? It feels like a slap in the face! Here’s what happened to me: I saw an opening for my dream job and applied immediately. About a month later, they called me back and asked if I wanted an interview. I said yes and was interviewed a few days later. The interview went really well. I felt totally comfortable, confident, I made them laugh and they were impressed with some of my skills. They made a comment at the end which made it seem like so far I was their preferred candidate. They told me that they had around 30 applicants and six made it to the shortlist. They told me they would be in touch mid the following week. That week came and went and I hadn’t heard anything, so I called them. They told me that I was still the preferred candidate but they had someone last minute show up for an interview and they would let me know for sure by the following week. Now it’s the next week and I got this email from them:

“Good afternoon,

Thank you for your patience as we navigated employing for…position.

As previously stated, you were our first choice, however a late applicant approached the business and was interviewed late last week by the owner.

That person has accepted the offer of the role and therefore we are unable to offer you a position at this time. This was no reflection upon your abilities or promise of development, rather they possessed skills we were unable to ignore.

We wish you well in your job-hunting endeavours and feel confident you will be an asset to any role you gain.

With best wishes for your future.”

Is this normal? I think they shouldn’t have told me I was the “preferred candidate” because it made me think I would be hired. Now I feel so deeply disappointed. Thanks for reading anyway. Any thoughts or advice going forward would be appreciated.

Companies Got bought out, changing my job completely

Upvotes

So my company got bought out; and they did give me another position, but I have to move to the other building and do a completely new position. I’m pretty nervous to be honest.

I’ve been told it’s a really big step with moving forward, like I’ll be making more money and the job seems easier. But it doesn’t take away my anxieties for the situation. Change is terrifying. Has anyone else been through something similar? If so, does it get better?

Resumes/CVs Should I quit a second time?

Upvotes

I really need help deciding whether to leave my apprenticeship or not.

Background:

  • Where I live we have 5 „stages“ of school. I was at the highest, but quit after 11 years and automatically got the 2nd highest education degree
  • To have full access to universities I need 6 months extra qualification, because I dont have the highest education
  • I am in the first month of my third and last year of training

Reasons to quit:

  • Sexual assault at work and nobody cares (I was only assaulted once, but I know more than 5 other women that are or have been assaulted)
  • Working conditions (working shifts, breakes, schedules) worsened drastically in the last two months
  • difficult and long arrival to work
  • sexism and gossip is normal here
  • Bullying of trainees is also common
  • Exams has been delayed into my third year instead of second, which will be way harder than usual because of bad management

Reasons to not quit:

  • Because I quit school and didnt finish the highest education degree, quitting this job would lead to a very ugly CV

Basically everyone is telling me to „just finish the last year, its probably not that bad“ and that no recruiter would accept my CV with two quited „jobs“

Would it really be this fatal for my future CV?

Job searching It’s been over 1 year since my partner has had a job..

My partner has been laid off for over a year now and it has been incredibly difficult, especially as he carries the weight of a mortgage, debt, and the pressure of wanting to provide. He is a law school graduate who was recruited straight into tech and has built a strong career in recruiting and as a Legal Operations Manager.

At this point, even an hourly role at a law firm would be a tremendous help. I am deeply concerned for him, as this long stretch of unemployment has taken a toll on his mental health, and I just want to see him regain a sense of purpose and stability.

If anyone has a connection or knows of an opportunity, I would be endlessly grateful.

We are based in Phx, AZ

Job searching Best jobs to avoid people

I know its hard to avoid working with people all together but after working in several jobs throughout my life with some form of customer service either with external customers or working in projects internally at the company, I’m just tired of working with people and can not see myself doing this for the rest of my life (currently employed). What jobs would help me avoid people as much as possible? This can be from any field as I’m willing to retrain/re-educate even if it takes a few years

Applications Haven’t been able to get a job

Since my parents keep bothering me about getting a job. And I mean any job…. I been applying and tailoring my resume for just about anything. Fast food, cleaning, manufacturing, apprenticeships, barista, various entry level office work, pharmacist technician (I messed up the one interview), post office, warehouse, roofer, driver, CAD technician, baker, various retail positions. I am getting nothing.

Next I tried some gig work. I must be very unlucky. Tried Amazon flex, nothing, door dash, nothing? On a weekend? I don’t live in a metropolis, but come on the city is not that small?! Idk I can try instacart?

Now, my last job was 3 months ago. Well more of an internship that was 3 months. Before that…7 years ago. Soo you can imagine the long gap scares everyone away. Once I get to that topic, which I lie my ass off with gig work.

The only “jobs” that actually reach out for me, is jobs I know most people don’t want to do, nor my friend would recommend. but it seems to be my only opportunities.

Which is:

Border patrol, police (gotta wait for another job recruitment rotation), ICE, PMC (low-to medium risk) security guard (armed and unarmed), range safety instructor.

The other alternative my one friend said since he said my body is very appealing. Sex work lol. Which eh, not my thing.

Post-interview Nervous about starting a new job and the unfamiliarity that comes with it

For context, I’ve been at my current job for 2.5 years. I’m familiar with everyone there. I have a good relationship with my boss and coworkers and many of my coworkers were my friends before they were my coworkers. I’m leaving to start a new job in 2 weeks and am just overwhelmed with anxiety. Questions like what if I fail? What if I don’t meet the expectations of my new boss? What if I end up hating it? And I am just terrified of unfamiliarity and different-ness if you will because I’ve been so comfortable at my current job. It is something I need to move on from as it does not pay very well and is not a career. I know this new opportunity a good thing and will be amazing for me in the long run but right now I am just feeling all the bad nerves about it. Any tips/advice?

Career planning Comfort? Money? Career path?

Right now I work night audit for a hotel for 18/hr, most for this job in my area are doing 14-16. I've been at this location for a year, management is falling apart 24/7 but the job itself is simple, I'm good at it, and it lets me spend time (sometimes not much time but sometimes two+ hours of my shift) looking at my phone, or doing things i actually like on my laptop. The problem is they arent giving raises. The owner declined the raises the gm asked for for the building multiple times now. In 6 months my rent is going to go from 550 to probably over 900 as my roommates are splitting up and I'll be looking for a new place. So I've returned to the job hunt.

I have some interviews lined up, in the 20-22 range, but is it worth it to take a possibly more effort less downtime job for 2 dollars more? Theyre in labs (sterile processing and quality controll) which is more in line with what I actually wanted to do for work(wanted to get a chem degree but had to take the associates and enter thr workforce) but i also would rather not work a real job if i didn't have to, I'd love to just get a bulshit office job tbh but i don't think those are real. I know money is money but I also dont want to fuck up a good thing and I'm looking for perspective?

Qualifications What is Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and what is it that i am supposed to be familiar with?

The listings i am looking at are in the chemistry field and i guess this applies to medical jobs.

A google search tells me GMP is about 3 things:

  • medicines are of consistent high quality;
  • medicines are appropriate for their intended use;
  • medicines meet the requirements of the marketing authorisation or clinical trial authorisation.

Is there more to this magical GMP or is this it? As a chemist the fact that my product should be:

  • pure
  • work
  • authorised to used.

Just seem like bare minimum from a product standpoint.

So when i get asked if i am familiar with GMP, what is it i am supposed to be familiar with?

Compensation Should I ask for a raise

I work as a diesel mechanic apprentice, I started just over a year agoa and I was browsing indeed just out of curiosity and saw my company is hiring for a diesel mechanic apprentice at our other location a couple towns over. I currently get paid $24.68 and the job posting says $26.50/hr for the same job with the same shift time. I feel like I should ask for a raise but I'm unsure if its a good idea? What do you guys think?

Job searching Where do I start?

Upvotes

how do I get some level of experience or get jobs. i never had a job before and two job agencies just abandoned me. I wanted volunteer work but apparently that’s not open either? Is my last resort a trade? Idk. Also should I start waking up early from an alarm clock and going outside as a form of prep. I’m one of the kids that barely showed up to school. Someone said to visit the place and ask the manager if they hiring. Like low entry jobs. Should I learn grammar?

Career planning Switching from Sales to Data Analysis, is it worth it?

Upvotes

I’m currently working in sales but I’ve started learning Excel, SQL, Python, and Power BI because I want to pivot into data analysis. I’m not sure how people usually make this switch without prior technical experience, what kind of salary I can expect at the entry level, and whether this field is actually good in terms of growth and demand. Would love to hear from anyone who has made a similar move or is already working in data.

Layoffs I feel like I'm about to be laid off end of this month, how do I prepare ?

Well, this is totally out of left field.

About 4 hours ago, all of my department got an email from HR basically saying that our department is going to be "restructured" and "absorbed" into another larger department in our organization. Here's the issue, I basically do clerical/secretarial work at the moment. I was initially hired in 2023 as a data analyst, but I was pigeonholed into a customer service/clerical/secretarial role about a month after beginning. I basically provide non technical support to the tech team, such as outbound/inbound calls as well as email drafting and data entry/typing and the occasional presentation for the team.

As far as I know, our organization has done zero new hiring since late 2024. For the past several months, I've had very little work to do , along with my team. I'm a bit afraid to be honest. I'm 31 yrs old and graduated in 2020 with a BA in social science and this job is the highest paying job I've ever had. My t/c is currently around 85k a yr with bonuses and my organization also has a pension and gives me a health insurance stipend.

I've heard the job market is really rough right now. I'm not seeing any jobs that are hiring that even remotely pay close to what I'm making now. I do have a bit of a financial cushion but I'm a bit worried at the moment. I'm really hoping for some good news tmro but it's not looking great.

Career planning How to Evaluate Tools for Cold Email and Lead Generation

I’ve been researching cold email and lead generation tools lately, and the landscape is huge. There are dozens of email finders, warm-up tools, and outreach platforms, and most of them claim to have the “biggest database” or “best accuracy.” In practice, many are overpriced, outdated, or miss a lot of emails.

For beginners, it’s worth focusing on tools that balance price, usability, and core functionality. Tools like Snov io, Hunter, Mailivery, and RocketReach each cover email finding, verification, and outreach in slightly different ways. Some are pricier but more feature-rich, while others are lighter and easier for beginners to handle.

I’m curious how others in the community approach this. Do you prioritize accuracy, features, or price when choosing tools? Have you found any particular strategies or platforms that work well for managing leads efficiently without breaking the bank?

Networking A former colleague is the hiring manager at a job I’m interested in. How do I message them?

I was recently looking at staff jobs at my old university and saw there was an opening at a spot I used to work at as a student. I had a pretty good relationship with the faculty, and another student worker and I talked a lot while we were there. The other former student worker is now the hiring manager there. I’m looking in possibly applying there again, and I’m not sure if I should message them before applying or not. I have them added on social media, and their email contact info is on the job posting. Should I message them, and if I do what should I message them and should it be via social media or their professional email?

Post-interview When is it appropriate to check on job outcome/application process?

For more context, there’s a job role i applied to (food/customer service related) and have recently had an interview which was followed by a trial shift the very next day. The trial shift went great, the person overlooking it said everything was good and that i should hear back from the employer the same day. I sent an email to let the employer know about the trial shift but have not heard anything back from them. There have previously been communication issues as apparently some of my emails weren’t received for some reason, so am thinking that might have happened? When they did get my emails they responded very quickly. Either way, is it appropriate to email to check on the position 3 days after the trial shift? I don’t want it to seem like am being pushy, but don’t want to risk not contacting them for long enough that they forget about my application and move on with another applicant.

Contract work I ask for extra hours, i get them, and then when I go to do my contracted hours I get asked to go home because they can’t pay me for my overtime.

For example, tomorrow i’m working 10am-4pm, not getting payed for it, instead i’m getting my ‘time back’ on my next shift. Are they allowed to do this? - idk if i explained this well so long story short say I have 12 contracted hours, they will make it seem at first as if I have done overtime but then within the week i may come in for just an hour because they took that overtime and made it contracted?.. if you get what i mean. even though i keep asking for more hours. My manager says it’s payment restrictions but doesn’t tell me i’m not getting extra pay for those hours until i get sent home after an hour. What can I do?

edit - it was in lieu, HOWEVER I had no idea this was even a thing. I didn’t agree to this. I was clueless this was even happening. just got sent home last shift.

ANOTHER EDIT - this is what i found on google, but i feel bad if i say anything because she told me after i took toil not knowing I took toil. (yes stupid I know) I reckon next time i notice i’ve been put down as that i will say something i just don’t know what.

If you do not want to take Time Off in Lieu (TOIL), your employer cannot force you to take it, as TOIL is an arrangement that must be agreed upon by both parties. You can request to be paid for your overtime instead, especially if you are leaving your job, as employers are often legally obligated to pay for accrued, unused time off. You can also decline the offer of TOIL by stating you would prefer overtime pay or to focus on other commitments. Your Rights Regarding TOIL Not Mandatory: Employers cannot force an employee to take TOIL, as it is a voluntary agreement. Payment in Lieu: If you leave a job with unused TOIL, your employer is legally required to pay you for that time at your standard rate of pay. Contractual Agreement: TOIL arrangements are typically outlined in an employment contract. You have the right to understand your contract's terms regarding overtime and TOIL. How to Respond State Your Preference: You can directly tell your employer that you do not wish to take TOIL and would prefer to receive overtime pay. Refer to Your Contract: If your contract does not specify TOIL or clearly states you will receive payment for overtime, you can use this to support your request for payment. If Leaving a Job: If you are leaving your employment, you have a stronger case to request payment for any accrued TOIL, as this is a legal requirement in the UK. If Your Employer Insists Seek Guidance: If you are still being pressured to take TOIL, you can seek advice from resources like the ACAS website (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service). Check Your Contract: Review your employment contract to see if it specifies whether you receive overtime pay or TOIL.
