Time for a follow-up text to request your record of employment and to file for unemployment insurance due to layoff. If they contest it, you'll have this screenshot as evidence.

When its a legitimate layoff, I don't panic anymore. I learned from covid. Unemployment isn't bad. I see it as a vacation from work. During that time, I enjoyed not working after many years of working very hard.

I work 2 jobs now and I miss it sometimes. I have a full-time job thats very stable and a part of a union. I cant stand working for private sectors anymore because they can fire you for any reason very easily

u/FluidLock 3d ago

Unemployment is only fun if you have money set aside for this exact situation. Fortunately when I get laid off early in the year it was ok I had some money saved up. But by the time I found a job I was super lucky because my UEI was running out and so was the money I saved up.

I can say I miss having so much more time to relax, go to the gym at whatever time I wanted to, play video games and sleep in. But I’m more happy that I can pay all my bills and still have money left over at the end of the month. The unemployment checks were barely cutting it for me and wouldn’t be enough if I wasn’t living with my parents. I would’ve been living in my car.

106

u/Suavecore_ 3d ago

Well, he learned from Covid which means he was getting his UEI and another $600/week on top of it

54

u/imapilotaz 3d ago

Yeah. If i get unemployment, i get a roughly 75% pay cut. So, yeah UI doesnt magically fix things.

6

u/Tearakudo 2d ago

The last time I collected UEI I went from 40/yr to $200/wk - yeah, it's not a good time. Especially with so many states pushing into the 'effort' bullshit conservatives enjoy so much. I had to drive 50miles round trip to a UEI office EVERY WEEK and have an appointment with someone to continue collecting, eating roughly 10% of my UEI in gas

7

u/pissedpiglet 2d ago

Yeah you definitely need to have additional money sitting aside when you go on unemployment. My ex went from an $70k/year job to about 200 a week. That pretty much was just enough for our groceries. I had to pick up the utilities on top of the mortgage I was already covering by myself. And she rode that unemployment out until it ran out. And she was slacking on getting a job, applying was so hard and gave her headaches apparently. Anyways, that’s why she’s an ex now lol

1

u/SourceFire007 2d ago

No, but it’s better than loosing 100% of the salary…

5

u/Freedom_by_vanlife94 2d ago

I made more on unemployment during covid than I've ever made from working. It was a paid vacation for like a year and it was awesome.

12

u/Suavecore_ 2d ago

Everyone getting the Covid payment, even before their own unemployment income, was already making more than me while I managed a gas station during that time. I had a friend who had the audacity to complain he was bored while making more than double what I made while working. What a time to have a "non-essential" job..

8

u/Bodees1979 2d ago

This is what has always bothered me. I worked two "essential" jobs during covid and would have made more money on unemployment still. I am still mad that they never made it up to those of us who worked through all of it. I had no issue at the time since I think a lot of people would have been homeless and stuff without the extra money. But why couldn't they try to do anything for us in the future? Better interest rates on homes and cars and loans in general? Given us tax breaks on a lot of things in years to come? Instead we kept everything going and got completely sh*t on for it. So we could struggle while we watched most of the world have an extended vacation.

3

u/SeaworthinessHot2770 1d ago

I agree! My daughter worked through Covid at a grocery store. I worked through it as a hospital secretary. Neither one of us made big wages. There was talk at one point essential workers would get extra compensation. Of course nothing came of that. We all worked stressed and scared we were going to die from Covid.

1

u/Parking-External-112 1d ago

Yeah, that shit was fucked.

1

u/Summer-Rain206 2d ago

I was collecting EI during covid (Canada). Payments were capped and I received less than I would before covid. There was no "double dipping" if that's what you are implying.

1

u/One_Addendum1873 2d ago

Yeah. As someone unemployed NOT during COVID, twice in the last three years (tech sector mass layoffs). It is not fun. I went from having a robust savings to considering bankruptcy and am still living paycheck to paycheck trying to catch up.

1

u/CubedRubyx 2d ago

People were getting unemployment + $600/wk in COVID? I'm so mad I was an "essential" worker... Fuck that nonsense. I worked at McDonald's for $10/hr and struggled through my bills and food every month.

2

u/NextDoctorWho12 2d ago

Yeah my states unemployment is $200 a week. That will not even cover my mortgage. Unemployment in red states is fucking worthless.

1

u/Defeated-N-Tired-TA 22h ago

My husband got the max in California and it was 450 every 2 weeks. Blue states aren’t any better.

1

u/Active_Television_38 22h ago

I lived on my own and had enough at the end of my first month to pay all my bills still and I was still throwing money into stocks and crypto and the Roth IRA. Maybe some people get different packages but I was penny pinching my 800$ bi weekly check and did just fine it felt like vacation for me

1

u/FluidLock 21h ago

I was only getting $338 biweekly from unemployment so yeah $800 would’ve been sweet for me. Winning $500 on a scratch card and and making $200 from doing a small job with my friend’s business helped me stay a float for a bit

198

u/fcghp666 3d ago

It’s cool for like, 2 weeks. After that it starts to drag on you mentally

72

u/OCDGeeGee 3d ago

I had 6months off during covid n could have easily gone another 6more..

18

u/FaroutIGE 3d ago

i did too, but just to be fair, its definitely easier to cope with being at home all the time when everyone else has to too

27

u/Suavecore_ 3d ago

I wish everyone was at home during covid. That was the busiest time of my life working at a gas station making $1/hr more (for one month) for being an Essential Worker. No idea what people are talking about when it comes to the supposed lockdowns

3

u/ImNotAGameStopASL 2d ago

I worked at GameStop and our company tried telling everybody we were "essential retail" because we happened to sell PC peripherals that people working from home could use. It was the biggest load of bs they sold, and most of the time, they got away with it. The PS4 Controller shortage was real tho. My store ran out in April and didn't have them back in stock until November.

3

u/Suavecore_ 2d ago

I remember sharing an article about that, with an image of an employee handing a bag through the doorway to a customer, thinking how cartoonishly evil it was to call GameStop employees essential and force them to work during a pandemic. Meanwhile, I sold shit loads of cigarettes and lottery tickets

6

u/KifferFadybugs 3d ago

Ugh, yeah. I work retail pharmacy. It was the busiest we ever were and all the customers were even more hostile.

They've only become worse since then.

-1

u/Zealousideal-Ear1991 2d ago

Same with working at the hospital

2

u/LuxerOneCode 3d ago

I worked through the lockdowns as well, doing Uber Eats, so I don’t super relate to the lockdown trauma that people have, lol. Closest I have to that is not having in-person church for a few weeks early on, and realizing very quickly how isolated and lonely that made me feel.

4

u/Consistent-Option827 2d ago

I was locked down and I realized I am traumatized by the outside world so now I just wanna be locked down forever but I can’t

1

u/LuxerOneCode 1d ago

Aw man, that sucks :( I bet a lot of young people in particular feel that way. Lockdowns did so much harm.

1

u/Consistent-Option827 1d ago

Is it bad I don’t see it as a bad thing lol I enjoy my time and peace alone at home now

WOW! One whole dollar! I hope they didn’t take away that crazy raise!

-4

u/FaroutIGE 3d ago

its almost like your lived experience is only yours

0

u/Honestone79 2d ago

Was honestly one of the worst years of my life. If I had a choice to do it over again I might choose differently. I had a choice to be furloughed along with 500+ employees or stay and help working graveyard shifts maintaining a large commercial property. After only turning overnighters on a rare occasion over the years and making the flip to graveyard at almost 40 years of age it was beyond difficult. I worked that entire year and two months 40 plus hours weekly with only having 2 vacation days. Then we reopened and I had to flip back to working a salary based manager role during regular hours but turned 50-70 hours weekly. It was great to be back amongst the living and I was grateful. I never truly adjusted to sleeping during the day. It was also extremely lonely and depressing rarely seeing my family and working with only 2-3 people at a large property and never being around each other. I never felt rested regardless of sleeping 6-8 hours. Everyone that was furloughed returned with a completely destroyed work ethic. They always complained about how tired they were and how they missed being at home and getting more money for not working. I literally wanted to slap them. Tell me about tired. I would laugh when they mentioned being tired or how hard work was. Things never returned to normal. Everyone’s perspective has since changed besides those of us who continued to work during that entire lockdown period. Work-ethic and dedication never returned. Was everyone so stupid and naive to think that the government shelling out all of that money would not have huge implications to our economy. Look at where we are now. Inflation, shrink-flation, corporate greed at an all time high and taking advantage of the situation in buying out more properties and rentals. I don’t think we stand a chance against them. It was a big power play from the inception. We are all cooked.

-9

u/Stone0777 3d ago

How are you shocked that people had different race experiences than you? Guess the gas fumes got to you.

10

u/Suavecore_ 3d ago

You gathered that I was shocked from that? Race experiences? Did the gas fumes get you too?

5

u/trexgiraffehybrid 2d ago

I easily could have gone my entire life. I landscaped my yard and renovated my entire house, then started a lawn care business. Going back to work and being around those people and the politics again was comparable to death in some ways. I can't wait to retire.

4

u/swampwiz 2d ago

I could have done that until age 65.

42

u/Influence_X 3d ago

It didn't drag on me for at least 4 months

31

u/thekidlegacy6 3d ago

Ong idk what they talking bout it didn’t drag for loooooooong time actually caught me by surprise

32

u/Influence_X 3d ago

I had months skip by that felt like a week lol

21

u/thekidlegacy6 3d ago

Fr was like woah its August

15

u/DayThen5445 3d ago

My friend, feel you. It’s been a year that feels like both 10 years and 10 days. I can admit time has never been a friend, I’m time blind as fuck, but the more I dwell the harder it feels that’s for fuckin sure.

3

u/thekidlegacy6 3d ago

Yoooooo so true such a weird time after like 3-4 months shii felt like a desert east coast streets being empty will always be a core memory for me and then the day i went outside and everyone was drunk😭😭

5

u/lbcatlady 3d ago

How can you live off of it?

8

u/Influence_X 3d ago

I didn't, my life slowly collapsed until I had to move back in with my mother, I was unemployed for 9 months.

6

u/lbcatlady 3d ago

I'm sorry to hear that. I had to sell a lot of mybelongings on eBay and find temp work. It can take 2 months of hard-core applications to get something here in So Cal.

11

u/--sheogorath-- 3d ago

Man i wish I had the kinda job where not working is the thing that'd be mentally stressful

15

u/EncounteredError 3d ago

It didn't drag on me ever. First time was 3 months while looking for a job, loved my time watching movies and playing games not being burned out from a crap job. Second time was another 3 months when I made a crap load of money on Doge, with the same results. I have enough interests and hobbies that I want to learn/do where I'd never want to go back to a job.

5

u/brownsfan250 3d ago

I mean, sure, if you have money to watch movies and play games all day, you wouldn't be stressed. I'd say like 95% of people wouldn't have this luxury.

4

u/SpazmicDonkey 3d ago

Can confirm. I finally landed a job after about 4-5 months of unemployment and there af the end I was going insane.

It was fun for the first month, then it got real.

5

u/Yesitshismom 3d ago

That's how i felt

1

u/revthough 2d ago

I agree I was off for about a year after I had my son my wife made more than me at the time I never had anxiety in my life until I was off for that long I started having panic attacks I never had once I went back to work I’ve been fine ever since

1

u/Ok-Personality5224 2d ago

Yeah, it’s not even about the money.

1

u/woowooman 2d ago

Eh, working 80+ hours per week through the entire pandemic was definitely more mentally draining imo. I’d have been extremely happy to get paid more than I made working to just stay home and chill.

36

u/Burnsy112 3d ago

Oh so y’all got savings? I’d be cooked immediately lol my state gives like $100 in unemployment checks

14

u/Fluid-Sock-1202 3d ago

Right, my wife and I both got laid off 3 months a part from eachother! SC doesn't want anyone on unemployment & they let you know by how little they pay.... thank ,God we loved w/ fam or we have been on dem streets

16

u/gtck11 3d ago

Yup. Red state citizen here - $350 a week capped at 12 weeks. It doesn’t even fully cover my mortgage and HOA fees lmfao Our governor has point blank said he wants people to get back to work in jobs like the chicken farms and slaughterhouses.

3

u/liatrisinbloom 3d ago

Maryland, which is pretty blue thanks to the DC area but also insanely expensive also thanks to the DC area, caps unemployment at less than $500/week. I couldn't make my mortgage payment on that much.

5

u/lbcatlady 3d ago

Ca give 1800 a month. You can't survive off that.

0

u/weavesbeaves 3d ago

MD is expensive because they tax the hell out of you. Be prepared for more taxes since Moore blew that $5 billion surplus. SMH

8

u/DidjaSeeItKid 3d ago

Unemployment comes from a fund employers pay into, not "the state."

3

u/lbcatlady 3d ago

It's more of an insurance. Tge more employees you have the more you pay.

-9

u/weavesbeaves 3d ago

It has nothing to do with being a red state or a blue state. I’m glad your governor wants people to work. Why is that an issue? The state, red or blue, isn’t responsible for funding those who are capable to work.

9

u/OtherwiseUsual 3d ago

Where do you think the money for unemployment comes from? Hint: it's not the "state".

7

u/TIC321 3d ago

When I was unemployed during covid, we were given stimulus checks.. which was $600(regular unemployment) + $600 stimulus in which it still pays more than an average job to this day just by not working and you didnt need to apply to 3 jobs a week.

By the end of that, I ended up working part time and still collected on partial unemployment

2

u/Burnsy112 3d ago

I was unemployed back then too but I would definitely be screwed now lol

1

u/vivatarian 2d ago

Yeah but for people with expensive rent/bills/mortgage that ain’t cutting it.

1

u/Consistent-Option827 1d ago

Same. Was getting paid more than most people who worked

1

u/Slight_Manufacturer6 3d ago

Is the boss GenZ? Doesn’t seem like something an old person would do.

9

u/CrashTestDumby1984 3d ago

Depends where you live. In many states unemployment is a fraction of what you made at work and is still taxed, so it’s not enough to pay bills

5

u/eugeneugene 3d ago

I'm in Canada and unemployment is $1200 every two weeks. When I got laid off from my job I breathed a sigh of relief because I was burned out as fuck and knew I would be okay for now. I spent the first two weeks not even thinking about applying for jobs and just sleeping lol

2

u/CrashTestDumby1984 3d ago

How long does unemployment last in Canada? I’m in NYC and unemployment in my state literally pays less than minimum wage.

2

u/eugeneugene 3d ago

30 something weeks

2

u/Somepotato 2d ago

In my area it's $250 a week lol

3

u/LunaticLucio 3d ago

Man I just got my first job after uni and BAM 6 months later - COVID. I was contracted with the FAA and got the axe fairly quickly.

4

u/Newworldscrub 3d ago

I wish I had enjoyed covid unemployment longer than I did. The money was real nice.

1

u/itaintbad 3d ago

Where do you live that you got paid good money? During covid in Canada, the money the government gave was about half of what i make in a month

1

u/Newworldscrub 3d ago

US LasVegas, my taking home weekly was roughly 5k

1

u/itaintbad 3d ago

Damn weekly? We got 500 weekly. I usually make 1000 a week.

1

u/Newworldscrub 3d ago

Wish I would of enjoyed it longer. I quickly got another position in construction as an admin assistant. Was only out of work for about a month.

8

u/Green-Reality7430 3d ago

I'll forever be pissed off that I did not lose my job during covid smfh I hope the next global emergency allows me to collect fat checks from the government while I sit at home for 6+ months. I'm patiently waiting for my turn.

0

u/maryellrene 3d ago

Same!!!!!!

3

u/Altruistic-Soup786 3d ago

I didn’t work for a whole year and got pretty much all of my pay during Covid. Unfortunately regular unemployment isn’t that generous, but I do agree that it’s a pretty good time to catch your breathe and slow down a little.

2

u/TIC321 3d ago

I was able to pad on it during the stimulus period. By the time they wanted people to go back to work, I ended up working very part time somewhere so I was still able to collect. Pretty much made full time pay for part time work

1

u/Senior-Internet79 3d ago

I got fired back in late January. Been seriously looking for a job since like late April. I have a lot of experience in my field, great qualifications, great references (minus my last job who hired a new boss and lied about stuff I was doing to get me fired btw). It’s taken me into now to find something. Unemployment runs out in 2 weeks. I’m not sure how I managed to pull that off. I was starting to get panic attacks. Anyway… long story lol… my point was I’m going CRAZY not working. It was f**king amazing the first month

1

u/Formerly_SgtPepe 3d ago

Making $500-700 per week would literally make me very miserable

1

u/TIC321 3d ago

Not during covid. It was double. $600 + $600. Made about 5 grand a month by not working. It was insane

1

u/itaintbad 3d ago

Where do you live lol. I'm in Canada.. we made 2000 a month. So about 50% of what I normally make

1

u/TIC321 3d ago

In the US

1

u/itaintbad 3d ago

Gotcha, I guess that's what I get for having a decent paying job. It only helped the least well off

1

u/NewspaperContent4589 3d ago

This. Its stressful. But its a perfect window to reset and get something where you're appreciated.

1

u/TrainingAd9612 3d ago

Whenever I got fired recently, the unemployment people told me I’m not eligible because I didn’t have a real job last year. I worked for myself with Etsy, but that didn’t count. The lady sounded really sad when she told me at least lol. Still haven’t found a job. Shit sucks major dick

1

u/EmmyLou205 3d ago

I guess this works if you have savings or a significant other who can help and if you’re on their insurance.

I never felt peace until I found a new stream of stable income.

1

u/Biomeeple 3d ago

That's if you can live off the unemployment benefits. Last time I was in unemployment, total monthly unemployment payments didn't cover or make my monthly rent .

1

u/Own-Surround9688 3d ago

During Covid, everyone got extra. They were actually paying more in unemployment than I made at my job at the time (I got laid off for one whole week 🙄). It's not enough to pay the bills. I'm my state it's $300/week. My husband was laid off from January-April last year. I made more in a week than he made in a month on unemployment. He makes more than I do (before he got laid off and after he went back to work).

Don't panic but definitely hit the pavement looking for jobs. We ate through a lot of our savings keeping up with bills. Our dog also was diagnosed with cancer shortly after he was laid off so once he went back to work, it took us a long time to bank back up.

1

u/tallonfive 3d ago

Unemployment doesn’t even come close to the salary of a job though.

1

u/say592 3d ago

Remember that during COVID the payments were greatly increased. Unemployment is much less fun if you can't pay your bills, and if my childhood is any indication, the resulting stress can be devastating to the entire family.

1

u/cthulhudrinksbeer 3d ago

In my state the maximum unemployment payment is $275 a week. Which means I can pay rent and eat ramen noodles, but I'm going to lose my car, my phone, internet access, oh and my utilities will be shut off so I'll be evicted anyway.

1

u/Wild-Tonight-1774 3d ago

Depends on where you live. In California for example, the max unemployment per week is $450, and $1800 a month, which is nowhere near enough to pay the cost of living in most cities. Washington state for example is about $1200/week. CA hasn't updated their unemployment benefit in over 20 years.

1

u/OkoCorral 2d ago

Unemployment doesn't come with health insurance, if you break a bone or get sick, you could get into huge medical debt.

You have 60 days from the day of layoff to enroll in COBRA, so keep that in mind. If you enroll on day 59, it would cover you for the last 2 months, you of course have to pay the full premium which could be $1000/month or a lot more for a good plan. but medical debt can quickly run into hundred of thousands.

1

u/Pinewatch762 2d ago

I’ve really thought about going union for ironworking. Been non union for 12 years. Only issue the local here has no work at the moment. They have over 150 people on the bench. Construction sucks at the moment, atleast here in the south.

1

u/Locaisha 2d ago

I'm so happy for you.... Been laid off 1.5 months now, unemployment not paying because of backlog(some people are 12 weeks out with no pay) and my husband is supporting us right now. Fucking nightmare.

1

u/Eastern_Ad_9080 2d ago

Well you actually have to be approved for it. Other wise families are going without.

1

u/SeaTurtleLionBird 2d ago

Covid unemployment payments were sky high compared to the normal amount you get.

1

u/Consistent-Option827 2d ago

Same here! It always turns out better for me

1

u/GurProfessional9534 2d ago

You learned from the only 2 year span in 70 years where the employees had the upper hand over management? It might not be a transferable knowledge base.

1

u/Mysterious_Pitch_291 1d ago

My salary is nearly 5 times the maximum unemployment benefit.

Unemployment is something, but it sure doesn't take away any stress of being unemployed.

Congrats on that union job, they are kind of rare these days.

1

u/RalphTater 2h ago

I guess easy to say if you don’t have dependents. I have three people that rely on my income. They all also have their own medical needs which makes them dependent on my health care.

1

u/EmoGayRat 3d ago

Thats not the reality for many. I got laid off a year ago and the job situation in my country (canada) has meant I havent had stable employment since. I ran through my savings, had no choice but to Max out a credit card. I probably have to get rid of my dogs and will be homeless by the end of the year. I have health issues due to not being able to eat regularly.

2

u/itaintbad 3d ago

Dude.. get on unemployment. I'm Canadian too. If you were laid off, the gov will will pay you

0

u/EmoGayRat 3d ago

I am 19 and not financially independent. When I got laid off originally I was a 17yr old working part time - i didnt have the hours. The most recent time I was only there for a little over 3 months and still didnt have enough hours.

The government will not pay me anything, nor should they since I still live under my parents roof rent free in exchanging care for them. On top of that, we do get benefits from ow until my dad gets on odsp.

There is 0 reason why I should be getting any kind of government support. The government doesnt have to ne paying for the fact I cant hold down a job. That's my own fault.

6

u/PapiSchwa 3d ago

And they have tangible evidence

4

u/Bitbotney18 3d ago

Solid! I wish I had gotten this advice myself a few months ago 😭

4

u/Whole_Relief8299 2d ago

Thank you! I’ll definitely look into this

3

u/markdm4805 2d ago

Don't forget many companies try to cut your hours but unofficially leave you on the schedule. That still counts as qualifying for unemployment.

1

u/Shadow_Integration 2d ago

Yep. Constructive dismissal.

4

u/Dark-Lord-7000 3d ago

So sorry you’re going through that my friend but this comment is your best advice. I know it feels personal, but don’t take it personal at the end of the day. Someone above him is going to chew him out and do the same thing to him. It’s all business and I hate saying that that’s some bullshit to be honest.

2

u/National-Plastic8691 3d ago

file right now

2

u/CodedRose 3d ago

This is the way. Its all documented too.

2

u/Recent-King3583 3d ago

What’s the correct phrasing to ask for this?

10

u/Shadow_Integration 3d ago

"Thank you for letting me know. Please include my ROE with my paycheque so I can add it to my records. Cheers!"

Note: ROE is very much a Canadian term. You'll likely have different terminology elsewhere. Revise as necessary.

4

u/LickMyTicker 3d ago

First time I've seen someone online make a Canadian concept the generic.

5

u/eugeneugene 3d ago

we should do it more often

1

u/alang 3d ago

It sounds like they had only been there for a short time, since they hadn't gotten any pay stubs yet. So they may not qualify. :-/

1

u/FlapJacksMommy 3d ago

If its california ot usually calls back on the last 18 months of, not including the quarter you applied in. It doesnt matter how long the person was at this last job .

1

u/TheComplayner 3d ago

Record of employment?

1

u/Shadow_Integration 3d ago

The document that the employer is legally meant to keep that states start date, end date, hours/days worked, and reason for leaving.

1

u/TheComplayner 3d ago

This is a Canadian thing

1

u/Shadow_Integration 3d ago

Correct, as stated in a comment I replied to further down the chain.

1

u/TheComplayner 3d ago

Sorry, I didn’t see it I don’t usually verify everyone

1

u/21KoalaMama 3d ago

updateme!

You can do that? I was let go by an employer in a manner like this. I could've been drawing unemployment?

If they contest it, you'll have this screenshot as evidence.

Why would they contest it, what difference does it make to them?

The unemployment premium the employers pay is based on how many of their workers they let go. The more they let go, the more they pay

I had an employer let me go once and I went to file for Unemployment Insurance. 15 weeks later, it was denied. (It should have only taken two) I found out it's because they stated on the form that I quit instead of that I got fired.

I contested that immediately and reamed the hell out of my previous employer. Incredibly shady practice. If you quit a job, you're no longer qualified for unemployment insurance.

Exactly this! A similar type of text is how I got unemployment while looking for another job. It was years ago, so it was easier to get a job and I had a job before my first unemployment claim was even processed. Sigh.... different times.

record of employment

What would you expect to receive?
Edit: Nevermind. I read a reply that says it's a Canadian thing.

Time to get off reddit, and go get a job instead of free loading for months and blaming the "economy".

Only when you experience sudden job loss for yourself will you understand how grossly unempathetic your statement is. You need an absolute refund on this current attitude of yours, this one is broken.
