Unpopular opinion on this sub: making judo safer to be able to go 100% in competition and in training is completely fine and not everything is about self defence and killing other people.
I actually think making it safer to go 100% in competition and training is exactly why Judo is so effective in self defense. Old school jujitsu had all the killing techniques, but because they couldn’t practice like judoka Kano and his boys trounced them.
the people who talk the most about self defense tend to be low level competitors if they compete at all. theres a reason you dont hear olympians speak extensively about it but some 30-40 something yr old podcasters do.
you'll never have guarantees but i genuinely think if you take most combat sports seriously for 3-4 years you might fare fine if you had to defend yourself against the avg person your size who wants to fight. the avg person who wants to fight is not a D1 linebacker or a judo world medalist or a bjj adult pan ams champ.
theres a chance you could do mma and get unlucky. i think it's interesting the vast majoirty of people outside of combat sports seem pretty content with their lives without wondering about the lightning strikes chance they run into a competent fighter that wants to fight them.
There's no perfect system and that's okay because fighting outside of a sport isn't the same which i know "street fight" dweebs say all the time, but yeah it really isn't. and thats okay. mike tyson probably doesnt give a shit if some blue belt online says he can take him down and sub him.
