the people who talk the most about self defense tend to be low level competitors if they compete at all. theres a reason you dont hear olympians speak extensively about it but some 30-40 something yr old podcasters do.

That doesn't mean the self defense people are wrong, though. It's likely that giving oneself over to the sport side is also committing to a bias.

you'll never have guarantees but i genuinely think if you take most combat sports seriously for 3-4 years you might fare fine if you had to defend yourself against the avg person your size who wants to fight. the avg person who wants to fight is not a D1 linebacker or a judo world medalist or a bjj adult pan ams champ.

theres a chance you could do mma and get unlucky. i think it's interesting the vast majoirty of people outside of combat sports seem pretty content with their lives without wondering about the lightning strikes chance they run into a competent fighter that wants to fight them.

There's no perfect system and that's okay because fighting outside of a sport isn't the same which i know "street fight" dweebs say all the time, but yeah it really isn't. and thats okay. mike tyson probably doesnt give a shit if some blue belt online says he can take him down and sub him.
