What you're watching is an 18 year old Ronda fighting a 15 year old Kayla. So don't draw too many conclusions from one Judo match.

oh I didnt knew they fought. Ronda was really good during her peak.

She was the greatest, if only she knew how to take a loss.

What was the greatest in? Certainly not judo lol.

She wasn’t the greatest

At that point in time, in MMA, representing Judo, she sure was. If the world didn't put her on a pedestal maybe she wouldn't have chickened out when she lost.

She didn’t have the boxing or stand up skills. She was a one trick pony and the standard improved

It wasn't only the improving standard. Holly Holm took her out with ease, and there's no version of Amanda Nunez that would lose to Ronda. Miesha Tate was much closer to beating her up on the feet than people remember. She just didn't seem to notice that Ronda really felt those strikes.

She was the nr1 p4p female fighter, no doubt. But mostly because we didn't know better.

I had no idea they were even in the same weight class. I thought Kayla was at least a class up

I am acquaintances with one of her Judo coaches. Kayla went up a class because Ronda was in the class she was in. So they wouldn’t compete against each other.

Oh that’s interesting. Had no idea

Pretty common thing with teams.

I remember an interview with Jimmy Pedro about what's best for the athlete where he said this. It would've been super difficult and unhealthy for Kayla to drop down and they didn't want two athletes in the same division if they could help it, so he told her to start lifting weights and eating enough to bulk up. It made me happy that he considered what was best for the athlete. It's my understanding that's not always the case in Olympic sports.

There was a group of 4 of us at our dojo that all grew up fighting close to the same weight class, frequently 2 or 3 every month competing against each other. More than once we all fought the same category, but only once was it just the 4 of us.

This was back in the day when straight out leg grabs were allowed in IJF competitions.

The age difference here in their teenage years makes a huge difference

Kayla would have destroyed her in the Octagon, she’s far better in the feet than Ronda, plus she’s got a massive weight and strength advantage. Kayla destroyed Holly who knocked out Ronda.
