We should learn leg grabs in class even if we can’t use them in competition

This feels like an extremely popular opinion to me. And even then, my gym teaches, and allows them in Randori. Though that, and a few other techniques, come with the caveat of teaching them after the 'normal' way to do stuff, and make sure to explain that it doesn't work in competition.

That depends on the club. My club teaches it, but it’s ofc not the main focus.

And, I might be wrong, but it seems the new BJA syllabus includes leg grabs for grading. Ofc, only relevant if you are in the UK

Im pretty sure the BJA removed the leg grab throws from the syllabus with the new scheme no? I had to do the leg grab throws for all my gradings, but they are definitely not on the new syllabus the BJA have published - https://www.britishjudo.org.uk/get-started/grading/kyu-grade-scheme/

Just checked: no leg grabs in any of the new syllabus. Meh

They've all been added into the new Dan grade syllabus, but only in pieces from 2nd-5th Dan.

I must be blessed then because they do teach leg grabs at both my schools. They just warn us that we can’t use it in competition

This is gonna be my 4th Annual Leg Grab August as a sensei at my gym, and it's a goddamn great time every year!

So leg grabs for one month?

Exactly! Every Tuesday night we'll spend 90 minutes doing one or two leg grabbing throws, with a bunch of chill randori to help reinforce good timing.
