Hey, whats the name of this throw. Sorry for the slight buffer and low quality in the clip, i had to retrieve it from another post online.

I would say a version of soto makikomi? it looks like an attempt at a koshi guruma but ends up being a soto makikomi.

For me it's somewhere in the middle ground of soto-maki-komi and tsuri-goshi. Not quite enough wrapping for maki-komi but also not enough hip engagement for a -goshi technique.

I agree just bad throw of both.

Ohh that makes alot of sense, when i did it, i was attempting a harai-makikomi (i have no idea if thats a throw, im an orange belt) but it went wrong but i kind of just went with it. Thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated.

Yes, Harai-maki-komi is a Kodokan recognized throw!

But it is more like a harai-goshi where you follow to the ground right into the hold.

The strong pull with your right arm is kind of the staple for tsuri-goshi, that's why I threw that name in.

Yeah first watch I went "oh makikomi" and then on the second watch I said "hmmm maybe?"

Tsuri goshi >> makikomi at the end

Pretty sure Soto-makikomi. Even though its somewhat lacking in fluidity, i do see a sacrifice at the core, so no hip techniques and then we land at soto-makikomi. For others there is missing leg action, wrong direction etc

O-tsuri-goshi - tsuri-goshi with an over the top grip. The fact that you went with the throw dont make it a makikomi tecnique. My point of view.

Soto makikomi is my favourite throw, and in my experience your right arm is wrapping around their arm and you’re turning further to get your ukemi in. I agree this looks more like a tsuri goshi off a cross grip.

Yes. Soto makikomi its done with a wraping around motion in which tori sacrifices his own center of mass to drag uke with him. In this throw in the video, tori crearly lifts uke with his hips, while he is standing still, and only falls to the ground as part of the kake to complete the tecnique.

The finish was very Greco-Roman, back to chest lol

I thought greco roman wrestling was no sacrifice throws??? Im not sure tho lol

Not exactly, and you'll still score points if they're flat on their back regardless of your position on top of them

Tsuri goshi, definitely not soto makikomi like many are saying (or any makikomi throw, for that matter).

I don't think many of the commenters know what makikomi even means. There was no "wrapping" motion from tori here. Tori maintained his right hand grip the entire time.

You can keep the grip over the back and still get makikomi tori just needs to put the hips fully through to get the winding.

1

u/AdAdministrative2076 5d ago

Makikomi is about winding i know that, many people assume that anything done from a Georgian grip should have “makikomi” thrown in as a suffix, when in general, and in this case, it lacks the twisting action.

Feels like we gotta make up a new name for these over the back Georgian style things.

1

u/AdAdministrative2076 5d ago

Honestly that would be a good idea, i feel like people make so many throw variations , and variations of the variations at that point it becomes a whole new throw.

Some ideas for you from the Georgian Grip

Soto makikomi. Almost with a wannabe Harai in there too but not quite.

1

u/AdAdministrative2076 5d ago

Yea i wanted it to be a harai-makikomi but it definitely wasnt because i failed in the end.

2

u/Living-Chipmunk-87 5d ago

I wouldn't consider it a fail. Maybe it wasn't the most beautiful execution, but it worked.

2

u/AdAdministrative2076 4d ago

I will call it a “practical” execution 😭🙏

Well at 53, I finally got my black belt...my judo is still pretty ugly so I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point. It worked, and yes, a perfect throw is a perfect throw , but a winning throw is a winning throw too. Keep working, you are doing just fine.

You said you were going for harai makikomi. So that's what it was. The real question is "How good of a harai makikomi was it?" and the answer is "Good enough for the ippon."

Naming throws is for grading, not contest.
