Grow Calluses

This is the answer, unfortunately

Think about how much worse your osoto was before you lost a few layers of skin.

Keep training, after 20y it should get better

u/Harry18492 1d ago

20years....if you're lucky.....my feet look like I served on that pirate ship in Pirates of the Caribbean....after 37 years of judo. Don't think I've grown a big toenail since my teens!!!!

u/ExtraTNT shodan (Tutorial Completed) 1d ago

40y in this case… or maybe 50…

If that happens clean it afterwards and make sure it is covered if you train with it. Literally a doorway for staph. Ask me how I know :/

My first mat burn was around the same place. I decided to "disinfect" it with the only thing I had to hand..... alcohol-based aftershave on it. I'm not known to scream from pain but that was an exception

I carry antiseptic wipes with me now.

u/Plane-Government576 1d ago

I had a thick layer of skin from under my big toe peel off one time and there was fresh pink skin under is and I used some iodine on that and holy shit it burned lmao

2

u/L0rd_Zuko ikkyu 1d ago

How you know?

5

u/Plane-Government576 1d ago

Had a similar scrape on elbow. Did 1 bjj sesh with my arm covered and had staph infection a few days later right next to the scrape

2

u/L0rd_Zuko ikkyu 1d ago

Damn, I hope you have not suffered any lasting damage

5

u/Plane-Government576 1d ago

Cheers man :) Luckily I have had no serious infections but definitely need to take these things seriously to avoid escalation. Starts out like a little pimple or spider bite and can  grows/spread over several days

0

u/KosotoGari 1d ago

nah, staph is pretty mild, people overthink it and forget there are more than 100 other worse infections you can get on the mats

3

u/GnaGi92 1d ago

Thanks for the peace of mind and then immediately yanking it away lol

u/Trolltaxi 1d ago

Avoid? We don't do that...

Pour some powder on it, cover it with a band aid for some days and it will heal. If you don'f cover it, you will probably keep it open, your sock will stick into it during the day, and it will heal really slow.

I usually get these during newaza, a quick wide arc movement belly down, and there is my mat burn. You will build a habit to move your feet a safer way, but high intensity will make you forget about that from time to time.

We talk about keeping ‘live toes’ frequently, but it’s easy to react in the moment, make a sweeping attack or evasion movement in newaza, and presto! Keep an antiseptic/cleaner in your bag always.

When it happens to me, I keep barefoot all day for at least a couple days, but I work from home so it’s easy for me to be shoeless.

Get some new skin or liquid bandage and apply

3

u/Just_Ad3004 shodan 1d ago

This is the answer. Hate that sting, but it builds toughness lol

12

u/zaccbruce Shodan + BJJ Blue 1d ago

Have live toes as much as possible, train consistently so my skin stays tough, and always treat any mat burn I get, including covering it if I'm training.

5

u/Peerfect yonkyu 1d ago

How do you treat the mat burns if I may ask?

3

u/Summoned_Kraken 1d ago

Not op, but if I can tape it then I do. If not, I throw on some Vaseline. After showers just dab with Neosporin. It sounds a bit high maintenance but I'm not interested in infections and want to be consistent lol

2

u/Best_Charge3591 1d ago

Superglue and some sort of antibacterial.

1

u/zaccbruce Shodan + BJJ Blue 1d ago

Clean, dry, Betadine, bandaid.

5

u/Outrageous_Savings_1 1d ago

New skin liquid bandage helps for the next session. Your body gets used to this over time.

6

u/Droopy132 ikkyu (competitor) 1d ago

That’s the neat part, you don’t.

3

u/LengthinessTop8751 1d ago

Don’t stop training. Your skin will get used to it and thicken up.

3

u/Vermicelli_Street 1d ago

Spray on some skin band-aid like new skin.

5

u/SignificantGlass168 1d ago

Thanks for the free feet picks!

u/Reasonable_Alfalfa59 1d ago

Gotta build up the thick skin

2

u/Complex-Buy1125 1d ago

Hypafix tape is good

2

u/TimeEnergyEffort 1d ago

This happens to me sometimes. 3M Micropore tape over it.

2

u/Old_School_7546 1d ago

After first year of training jiu jitsu my feet became bullet proof

2

u/MotorTentacle gokyu 1d ago

I have a pair of grippy socks that I have affectionately termed my "ne waza socks"

I don't wear them all the time, but if it's an intense Randori session I'll stick them on for the ground part

1

u/MasterOfDonks 6h ago

Lol love it

2

u/ReddJudicata shodan 1d ago

Tape.

2

u/Business_Pretend 19h ago

You feet may drag a little like mine, if that is the case when doing techniques or Randori you really have to remind yourself to walk properly

2

u/Bountykilla187 1d ago

First off it looks like you don't even lotion. What is your skincare because abrasions will happen but your skin being dry will make it easier to happen and longer to recover from

1

u/MasterOfDonks 6h ago

Dry skin is brutal. Same with ripping calluses off while dead lifting. Oof should have could have used lotion and exfoliated more!

Hello NewSkin glue

2

u/Bountykilla187 6h ago

Im going to say this to make your entire life change for the better. LOTION everyday multiple times. When you get out of the shower in the morning lotion your entire body. Before you go to bed after your shower LOTION your entire body. Throughout the day if your hands, elbows, knees,or any other part feel dry LOTION. You are torturing yourself by not using lotion lol. If anyone tells you not to lotion like I'm telling you they don't know anything. Also from a dietary standpoint start drinking more water because you need it. Im glad to see you reaching out to get advice so I will always try my best to help someone looking for answers if I have them. Also lotion with Shea butter or cocoa butter work best but if you don't like them look for deep hydration lotion. I promise the routine sounds much worse than it really is. This is something that certain communities are taught to do from the age of 4 or 5. We all learn something new everyday so I hope this helps you fast and for a long time because it 100 percent should

1

u/MasterOfDonks 6h ago

Great advice!

My wife would give me a pedicure and tell me to put cream on my feet and the socks

She saved my feet from Muay Thai abuse. I would have rubber melted into my callouses lolol built in shoes😆

2

u/Bountykilla187 6h ago

Well with this routine you'll be keeping the oem tread on your feet. Sidenote socks and Vaseline are definitely a great nighttime remedy for feet that need extra care. In a few weeks your wife will thank you for taking my advice.

1

u/judokalinker nidan 1d ago

I see people normally get these during newaza. Use live/active toes

1

u/Living-Chipmunk-87 1d ago

Get tough feet over time.

1

u/swissarmychainsaw 1d ago

Sandpaper sundays will fix you right up!

1

u/Brief_Score_9302 1d ago

I have permanent scars. A price I’m willing to pay for judo

1

u/itzak1999 1d ago

Awareness of my feet

1

u/D133T 1d ago

Short term if you have to train - spray on plaster on the specific point then a blue waterproof plaster + lighter/heatgun to melt it on, (don't try this at home / if you are a liability).

Check in with the kendo and karate guys as they barefoot it on wooden floors they get into the foot care/abuse a lot more.

*edit just in case - disinfect it before putting the liquid plaster and actual plaster on

1

u/shinyming 1d ago

You can’t they just happen. Neosporin, band aid and tape.

1

u/1308lee 1d ago

You need to mark this NSFW. You can’t be giving away free feet on the internet.

1

u/langoustine 1d ago

For the upper body, I wear a rash guard under my judogi. Some people also like the equivalent for the lower body (spats), but I don’t like how I lose friction and grip during newaza. Feet, no solution.

1

u/KosotoGari 1d ago

what a funny foot

1

u/acavedweller_ 1d ago

Lotion feet daily and tape if you drop

1

u/zombiechris128 1d ago

I trained mma for around 8 years and still got these on my feet every wrestling/rolling heavy class I still have a few calluses on my toes where they formed from it happening too much

Just clean them well and spend the next few days moaning about them, that was my secret

1

u/cliffomalley 1d ago

Toughen up

1

u/The_Mistcrow 1d ago

Suffer the pain until it doesn't hurt anymore 😅. Nothing you can do really. Tatami burns especially are simply a part of the journey

1

u/Far_Tree_5200 bjj 1d ago

Bandaid, medical tape, keep it clean, and let it air when sleeping.

1

u/Theyman2 sankyu 23h ago

Tape or Calluses

1

u/kleighcs 17h ago

You eventually get tougher skin and better awareness of where your feet are.

1

u/fintip nidan + bjj black | newaza.club 6h ago

You learn to stop dragging your feet.

Rarely some mats are just highly abrasive, though.

0

u/Possible_Golf3180 gokyu 1d ago

I wear socks

4

u/judokalinker nidan 1d ago

You are the dream uke for someone who likes ashiwaza. Also people probably think you are weird or have nasty feet.

2

u/Possible_Golf3180 gokyu 1d ago

Everyone I’ve trained with has used socks

7

u/judokalinker nidan 1d ago

Your dojo is weird

4

u/Possible_Golf3180 gokyu 1d ago

Maybe everyone has nasty feet and is weird, who knows

6

u/judokalinker nidan 1d ago

I will tell you that it's very atypical for judo.

Mat burn

2

u/Sigmawoz 1d ago

It depends on the type of mat the gym uses.

0

u/yung__n8 1d ago

Trim your toe nails before training next. You could peel potatoes with those things man

-3

u/qwertyasakeyboard 1d ago

Sambo shoes

-1

u/Status_Scallion_3842 1d ago

Use wrestling shoes
