Technique Is the jigoku-jime position a pindown?

My coach says the jigoku-jime/crucifix is osae-komi because you don't have leg control around the body. Is this true?

No, it’s not. Unless you’re on top of them on a reverse crucifix/ushiro jigoku jime, which transitions to mune gatame.

Is that when the person on top is lying on their front rather than their back?

No, it makes no difference. The current rules say you have to be partially on top of your opponent in order to count as a pin. you can't do it from say a side by side position. That said, you are probably choking them though.

Also that's the official IJF rule. I'v eseen it enforced at IJF world tour events. Would the ref enforce it at a small local or regional level, maybe, maybe not.
