General Training Wrong sasae tsurikomi ashi

Hello,

I'd like to know your opinion on that ankle throw but done in the wrong way.

In the original technique you block the leg on the side where you hold the uke's sleeve, intercepting their step forward, blocking their foot and pulling them towards you or slightly diagonally backwards while slightly stepping to the side making room for their fall.

I fully understand why it's done this way- it makes it more likely for them to land on their back, scoring an ippon.

Me and my favourite partner in judo were doing it wrong for a long time, we only realized like a month-two ago. We were tripping the leg on the side where you hold the uke's lapel. Closer and tighter grip makes it less dependant on good timing for intercepting the step forward and you can more easily force the technique to work.

I absolutely am aware of the drawbacks- forcing things is not the ideal judo way + throwing this way makes them more likely to land forwards and not on their back, not scoring an ippon.

But since we generally land it easier- I was thinking if it's not a better option for pure self defense in mind?
I never tested it, the only judo technique I pulled off in self defense was osoto otoshi (and it worked beautifully, like in an action movie).

I would love to hear your thoughts. This might be a very beginner-like question so sorry if the flair is wrong.

Competing and Tournaments Recommend fighters to watch.

I’m currently unable to train and compete for medical reasons so to keep up with progress I’d like to start analysing fighters and taking pieces from their game and trying to workout around my situation. Can anyone recommend any high levels fighters to watch that are tall for their weight class and fight predominantly left handed. I like using over the back grips too if that helps find a fighter similar. Preferably someone that does less drop throws but I’m open to anyone. Thanks. If you need my current weight class or any info just ask.

General Training I farted during Ura Nage

During randori, I tried to counter a forward throw with Ura Nage and a fart involuntarily escaped my body.

Luckily, it was loud all around us (because of multiple people doing randori), so I don't think anyone noticed.

That is all.

General Training Cool tricks

Does anyone have any cool tricks in judo that aren’t normally taught? Things that are kind of rough, but just part of the sport.

For example: shaving your head so you can rub your scalp against your opponent OR drilling your knuckles behind your opponents ear and jaw to open up their neck for a choke.

Beginner Is it normal to regress as a beginner?

White belt, training for about 8 months. I’m on the older side (40+) without prior experience. I picked up judo as a hobbyist for good exercise and the fun of it. I’ve so far had a blast. But…

I was a fast learner and doing a bunch of throws pretty well in the beginning. However over the past 2-3 weeks I suck. I’m struggling to execute basic throws and just overall have regressed. Ashi waza seems okayish. Not in randori, just in regular training.

Is this normal to hit a wall of sorts? I only train once a week due to other obligations but I’m very consistent. Also we do mostly technique, not much randori.

Technique Did I win with an illegal armlock?

Sorry if these type of questions aren’t allowed here… I’ts been a while since I’ve competed any tournaments. I remember different opponents of mine have complaint to the referee and the judges about: me doing an illegal armlock that made them tap out. Never got disqualified or got negative points. They always said: “It’s just an unusual armlock, but not illegal.” This was actually the fist armlock I was taught. But google and ChatGPT couldn’t help to find these moves either. So now i feel like it was an illegal move….

Let me illustrate it: Uke lays on his back while Tori sits on his stomach, like you’re gonna do a tate-shiho-gatame. Tori grabs Uke’s forearm, makes sure upper arm lays on his Tori’s thigh. And then you just apply pressure to bend the elbow back.

Always felt like a dirty way to win, because of its simplicity + It just felt like an instand win once we got in that position. Cause it was either gonna be. You’re arm around your neck for a hold and if you fight back. I would use their momentum for the armlock and they just tapped out.

There’s only 2 pics I could find on the internet (Not me)

Technique What forward throw has the easiest fall?

I've seen discussion of the hardest falls (sode tsurikomi goshi and ura nage seem like popular choices for the worst fall), but what do you think is the easiest fall to take?

I ask about forward throws because they're all high-amplitude to some degree, but they don't all feel the same.

My own thoughts: I keep expecting uki goshi to be an easier fall, because it's a lower fulcrum than other hip throws--but actually that means the ground comes at me faster than I expected! The softest falls I can remember from a big throw have been harai goshi, but I could never tell if that was because of the throw or just the particularly smooth partner who liked to use it.

Competing and Tournaments Flying armbar in comp?

In competition could you hit a flying armbar like Demetrious Johnson hit in the ufc. Each technique used is legal in the you are performing an ura nage straight into a juiji gatame (armbar) so I would assume it is ok in competition however the ref could see it as dangerous as you might not have full control of uke when going for the submission. Anyone seen this in competition before and should I attempt it? 😂

Technique Is standing Kata Guruma viable? Or other methods of Kata Guruma

Hi all,

I recently learned kata Guruma and I really love the throw however I don’t want to get too fixated on the one I learnt (a cross grip drop version), is there any other variants that are viable?

I’m aware of some like the way Heydarov does his kata Guruma but is standing kata Guruma or more traditional versions still competitively viable? Or from different grips like a belt grip or reverse kata Guruma?

Thanks for the advice :))

Beginner Here's how I got my gi white, after it started staining yellow.

It's me the person who had a yellow gi a week ago. Thank you for all your suggestions, I put them into chat gpt and had it given some suggestions as well as make up a gi care plan to keep it clean and functional.

I won't go through the whole thing, but in short.

Exfoliated my skin and had a quick cold shower before training and wore my rash guard (don't know how much of an effect this had, but every little helps).

Straight after training put my gi in a bucket of warm water with half a cup of oxi and massaged collar (still looked yellow at this point).

Gi was already broken in, so hot wash (60 degrees) for an hour, with half a cup vinegar, oxi, and biological detergent. Set it to rinse afterwards to remove the rest.

Hung out to dry in the sun and there you have it a pristine white gi every time. I don't know if it needs such as an intense wash every time, but this worked for both of my very yellow gi's.
