General Training what do you like about tai otoshi?

I have never liked tai otoshi. I feel like I run out of my opponents gi by the time I’m positioning my stopping leg. I also feel like anything tai otoshi can do, harai goshi can do better. as such, I never really drilled it or thought about it much, so I’m very very bad at it.

I recently decided I’m going to spend now until the end of the year focusing on improving this throw. I’ve been drilling it a lot lately but it still feels awkward even in uchi komis; I haven’t even attempted it in randori yet.

people that love this throw, what is it about tai otoshi that you love? what are some advantages this throw has that others don’t?

General Training Drills to do when you have a broken foot

Hey guys recently I broke my foot in judo practice and can’t bear any weight for the mean time……..what are some drills I can do to keep me in shape (judo specifically)? I’ve been doing push ups and sit ups but want to find other ways to strengthen my grips and so on.

History and Philosophy What is the formal etiquette for getting a replacement belt?

Say yours is old or damaged, maybe the ol’ belly has gotten a bit larger with the passing of time.

Of course it depends per each club but is there an etiquette involved in getting a replacement?

Even if it is not explicitly said I feel like the obi carries bit more weight than a gym bag or even your gi as it is something you earn/was always something you’ve been given.

Other Judo with natural, african hair

I'm growing out my type 4 hair and recently started doing judo, twice per week. I usually have my hair out in an afro, twists, or a twist-out. I realize it's common practice to wash/rinse your hair after judo practice for hygenic reasons, but with black hair textures it's generally recommended to wash your hair less often, a couple times a month depending on hairstyle, normally once per week is what helps MY hair texture prosper the most. I also worry about my afro, braids, twists, twist-outs etc. getting messed up and looking like shit due to rolling on the mat, during randori, y'know, stuff that's INTERGRAL to the martial art lol.

Right now, it just seems to me that grappling sports just dont align very well with african textured hair, and i care about my hair deeply.

Are there any other loose naturals with experiences on this issue? Do i just thug it out? Or do i choose a different martial art that wont limit my hair and vice versa? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Technique Has anyone heard of this osoto variation?

So I started judo a couple of months ago and I was taught to do osoto gari by pulling the uke in with both arms. Now this struck me as strange because I was taught in bjj to push with the collar grip and pull with the sleeve grip. Ofc I trusted my judo sensei about judo more than I trusted my bjj sensei about judo, but the problem is I can't find this variation ANYWHERE. Everything I find online says to pull with the sleeve grip and push with the collar grip. I asked my sensei about it and he said his teacher Jason Morris taught him this, so far be it from me to question an Olympian, but has anyone else done osoto like this, by pulling in with both arms?

Some great advice from Harasawa on how to use judo practice to suit what you need to develop.

Wish I had practiced like this when I was younger.

General Training Relaxing

I’m quite an experienced judoka (sandan, been training since age 6) but one of my coaches who has amazing movement and technique keeps pulling me up on my style:

“You are good, you could be great with some adjustments but sometimes you forget everything you know about judo during a match”.

He is always telling me to relax and use more movement, but even when I feel I am doing it, he points out I’m not and I’m using too much power and attritional grip fighting.

Any tips for cultivating looseness of movement?

I think part of the issue is the guys I am training are getting so good and fast that I struggle to be loose while also reacting quickly enough, so I end up using power to compensate for the speed deficit.

I’m thinking maybe I need to randori more with lower level partners who are less able to have a speed advantage and similar technical level, so I can focus on movement without getting overloaded.

Any other ideas for controlling my mind/emotions and using less power in my judo?

Thanks.

Judo x BJJ Any throws or strategies you recommend for an opponent who doesn't wear a shirt and sweats a lot?

Today I have a BJJ match, and it turns out I've had to face someone several times who doesn't wear a shirt and actually sweats a lot. So I've tried to apply techniques like goshi, but the problem is that when I try to do so, my opponent always breaks free, using his strength and also his slippery skin, which makes it difficult for me to get a good grip.

Last time, we ended up at a stalemate, as he tried to apply holds like the armbar, but I was too far from his technique. I tried to do the same, but he also broke away from my attempts.

So, what strategies do you recommend for tonight's match? I should also clarify that my opponent weighs the same as me.

Beginner Honest opinion please

I'm 30 I've never trained martial arts before ( I did take Kwon do for a bit tho) Yet, I want to get back because my city is getting dangerous and I want to be a man who can protect himself and others. Yes as cheesy as it sounds. So, what is the best one for street fighting.

I am between, BJJ and Judo. ( Krav Maga?) So I've heard they are the best. I sincerely do not want boxing due to CTE ( I had a nasty concussion snowboarding and Thank God I was wearing a helmet. )

So if you can give me a bit of advice I'd really appreciate it.

Technique Uchi Makikomi vs Drop Seoi Nage

I’ve asked about this before, but I have gotten interested in the move so I’ll ask again for different opinions.

Is there a particular reason to prefer Uchi-Makikomi to something like a dropping Ippon Seoi Nage? I find I tend to prefer Uchi Makikomi in a one grip situation, but I’m wondering if I should be working on a proper drop Seoi from that instead.
