LOCAL 8-year-old JahVai Roy pictured on July 10. In the early morning of August 16, he was struck in the head and killed by a stray bullet fired from outside his apartment. He was just sleeping.
8-year-old JahVai Roy of North York, Ontario, Canada, was struck and killed by a stray bullet in the head while in bed in his apartment in the early morning of August 16. Police described the incident as a “cowardly and disgusting act of violence”.
According to family friend Marcell Wilson, the child was lying in bed with his mother when the bullet hit him.
Toronto Police said several calls came in from reports of gunshots at the apartment just before 12:30 AM.
He was rushed to the hospital, where he died a short time later.
JahVai is the city’s 26th homicide victim of the year.
Speaking at the scene, Det. Sgt. Jason Davis called it “an unimaginably tragic incident.”
“He was in his home, the safest place that you can be with your family, in bed when he was struck by a stray bullet,” Davis said.
The homicide detective noted two other units in the building were also hit by gunfire, though no additional injuries were reported.
Davis shared that police do not have information about a suspect or suspects at this time.
He indicated that the shooting occurred outside the building near a playground where “a group of individuals were standing at that time.”
The incident called for stronger laws against gun possession and violence and has garnered widespread attention and support across the country.
This final photo came from his mother’s public Instagram account dated on July 10 with the caption “Littlest handsome”💔

The "he was just sleeping" line somehow makes it sound like there might have been something he could have been doing where he might have been a little more deserving

It sounds to me more like "he was just sleeping, he did nothing wrong and did not deserve this".

What? How did you come to that conclusion? That line means he was INSIDE, meaning that the bullet had to have gone through the outside of the apartment. It's not a common scenario to get hit by stray gunfire, so that is why that part is mentioned

I just moved out of the building he was killed at about 2 months ago. Absolutely insane news. The community in that building is extremely tight knit. It’s a horrible loss.
