The last image from film found among the wreckage of Air New Zealand flight 901 from November 28th, 1979 as it was impacting Mt Erebus in Antartica. I’m pretty sure it’s oil from the engines being splattered on a window in the milliseconds between them disintegrating upon hitting the mountain, and the camera being destroyed.

Her boyfriend earned his media nickname - the Monster of Miami. You may have noticed that I’m leaving out the murderer’s name on purpose, as I’d like to make this post more about Maria rather than what happened to her. Tragically, it is a shame that it is what she would be remembered for nearly 10 years on.

CELEBRITY German Biathlete and Olympic Champion Laura Dahlmeier (left) 26 days before her fatal climbing accident

From her instagram account (link):

(translated)

Laura Dahlmeier died on July 28 on Laila Peak (6069 m) in the Pakistani Karakoram Range in a mountain accident at 5700 m due to a rockfall. The rescue operation to recover her body was unsuccessful and was called off on the evening of July 29.

Laura Dahlmeier and her climbing partner were descending from the summit of Laila Peak in the Pakistani Karakoram Range on the morning of July 28. During a rappelling maneuver at around 5,700 meters, Laura Dahlmeier was struck by falling rocks. Her uninjured climbing partner immediately made an emergency call, and a rescue operation was launched without delay.

Attempts to recover her by the climbing partner continued for many hours but proved impossible due to the difficult terrain and ongoing rockfall. As the partner was also unable to detect any signs of life from Laura, she decided during the night hours to retreat from the danger zone and continue the descent.

On the morning of July 29, Laura Dahlmeier was sighted during a flyover by a military helicopter, but no signs of life were visible. Due to technical and rescue-related limitations of the helicopter, an aerial rescue could not be carried out. A ground rescue was also not possible because of the ongoing danger of falling rocks and the objective hazards at the accident site.

Based on the observations from the helicopter flyover and the descriptions by her climbing partner regarding the severity of the injuries, it must be assumed that Laura Dahlmeier died instantly. With nightfall, the recovery operation was called off in the evening. Her climbing partner was accompanied back to base camp by acclimatized mountaineers who had ascended to assist her. She is uninjured and is receiving care on site.

Recovering the body is not feasible for the rescue teams due to the currently prevailing difficult conditions with rockfall and a change in weather at Laila Peak, which pose too high a risk.

It was Laura Dahlmeier’s explicit and written wish that, in a case like this, no one should risk their life to retrieve her. Her wish was for her body to be left on the mountain in such a situation. This is also in accordance with the wishes of her family, who have expressly asked that Laura’s final wish be respected.
