Can I rescind my 2L summer job acceptance?

Accepted a return offer with mid size firm. Honestly did not love the culture and am not sure I would accept full time offer but felt like I had no other options. Now my dream firm is interested but the midsize firm won’t accommodate scheduling to split. What to do!!! The Career office people really scared me about rescinding my acceptance. Is it really that bad 🙏(Obviously I would not rescind unless I had an actual offer from big firm in hand.)

Con Law Resources

Hi all,

I’m going to have to teach myself constitutional law. The professor I have is incompetent at their job. Does anyone have any suggestions on resources that helped them to learn con law issues in particular?

Currently I’m using Studicata’s free videos on YouTube and am going to probably buy Quimbee or some other resource like that to supplement my studying.

Thanks!

Bar C&F NY

Hey everyone, quick question about what to include under employment history for bar C&F in NY. I did some volunteer work at a church during my undergrad years, but I'm not sure if I should include it. It was unpaid, non-law-related, and just a couple of hours a week. This does not seem to fit the definition of employment in NY, so I'm not sure if I should include it

Bluebook - why?

I just do not understand how or why it exists as it does and has for so long. I bought the paper version because I had to but (naively) thinking, “well, this is a citation guide, surely I’ll be able to find similar rules online.” Now that I’m actually using it, it’s clear digital would function so much more efficiently.

It seems the only place you can get it is from its official website, which requires a subscription. Law schools have the physical version in libraries but it seems no library has a digital version (I guess to push the subscription?). Westlaw, Lexis don’t get you access. It’s weird to me that you have to subscribe to a book rather than buy it outright when you can buy the digital version. It is also weird that a book which is central to the entire field of study of law is not easily accessible digitally, even within law schools themselves. I studied in grad school prior to law school and compared to MLA, APA, and Chicago, I have no idea what’s going on here.

That’s not to mention the bizarre, inconsistent, and idiosyncratic rules that it includes for what seem to be no reason whatsoever. The abbreviations are just random, the spacing feels random, and laboratory is still “Lab’y” in the brand new edition.

I’m aware that the cases will usually have the cite on them and that things like SumiNote will generate citations. Anyway, I guess this is mostly just a standard 1L rant about the illogical supremacy of the Bluebook. And also a request to send links to alternative digital versions of newer editions than the Indigo book, if you know any links.

Edit: I’m not complaining that it isn’t free. I’m complaining that it’s a subscription (other books aren’t, even if new editions come out), and that it isn’t easily accessible via law libraries (other books are), or as easily accessible as citation manuals in other fields (like Turabian, MLA, APA, etc.). This is not me saying “I want this expensive thing for free!” This is me saying I don’t understand why it’s so inconsistent with every other metric I would compare it to.

Fed Court or T&E

Need advice on whether I should keep fed courts (the class) or trusts and estates.

T&E would be the lighter lift and will help me for the Feb 2026 bar. Fed courts is notoriously hard and has all of the gunners.

Not sure if I want to clerk. Will be going to big law after grad (litigation).

Professor Reccs

Be real - when has getting close to a Professor either through office hours or in general helped you with job or internship placements?

Sure, they can write you a rec, but does it actually help if they don’t pick up the phone and call someone on your behalf? And how often does that realistically happen if the Prof has 300 students a semester.

NEED SERIOUS ADVICE!!!

I'm in my second year (of the 5 year law school in India) and I've been getting rejected from almost every other law firm. Now I know you might say that firms tend not to take interns from second year but then I've seen people getting internships at good places from quite early on with or without references. I just wanted to know what is it that I can do to make myself stand out. Also specifically asking, will Research Internships under Professors from top universities help? Is that a thing which firms consider? And if not then what is it which I can do apart from publications and all??

Mock Exam and Answers

I know our professors will give us in the future mock exams and answers for them. My question is there something that i can do to know how to actually write a law school exam? I’ve heard people say the IRAC method but if you could give me some advice that would be great.

What are some unconventional tips or tricks you’d like to share?

Just curious. Wondering if anyone has any advice on things they did in law school to help them study that weren’t necessarily the most conventional…but worked nonetheless? Like for example, I don’t take notes in class. Just circle a bunch of things the professor talked about so I know what to spend time on studying at home. I also don’t read the casebook. Online case briefs are more than enough to get through a cold call, I’ve gotten good grades saving my energy to learn rules and super basic examples to help me nail those down. Law school confirmed for me what I already knew, which is that I like shortcuts, so your finest shortcuts would be appreciated 🙏🏻

Advice needed: re-entering law.

Forgive me if this is a weird one. I felt like this was probably the best community to post this in.

I technically finished law school back in 2017. Got my JD and everything. But at the time, I had just experienced a family tragedy, and my mental health was so bad I could barely function. I firmly believed, and still believe, that I could not have passed the bar as I was. I was struggling to stay afloat at all.

So I took my knowledge and I went and taught middle school history. It paid the bills.

But I'm in a much better place now, and I want to finish what I started. I'm studying for the MPRE. I'm taking the Bar next summer. But I don't know what to do about finding a job right now.

Back when I was a 3L I was a law clerk and student attorney at a criminal defense firm, but my mental health struggles led to me basically disappearing. So that isn't a great start. I technically have no paralegal experience because... I wasn't a paralegal.

I'm just struggling to find my way back in. Any advice would be welcome.

Post Grad Employment - Immigration Field

Hello everyone, I am planning on sitting for the July 2026 bar. I have prior experience in family immigration, but really want to practice business immigration after I graduate. Is there any possibilities to work remote as a business immigration attorney? There are no business immigration firms near 100 miles from unfortunately.

Any advice would help.

Does Attorney (sort of)=Freedom?

Like a lot of people right now I am at a professional crossroads, layed off and burnt out. I am a healthcare worker (occupational Therapy Assistant). Layed off from a healthcare marketing gig.

Long ago I aspired to go to law school, but decided to get into filmmaking instead. Not the most stable choice. 😂. I ended up in OT because I like medicine and I like helping people. It was accessible. I have been considering Physician Assistant school, but the problem with PA is your ability to control your work life is pretty limited. Just like my situation now.

I took a short career test that suggested attorney as a possibility recently and it turned my head back to thinking about Law School. One of the greater appeals of LS over PA is that after your junior atty years my impression is you can do your own thing. Forge your own path and need only answer to the bank, the IRS, the BAR and your family. Is this impression true? Do many people do this? Or do more people continue on with the 9-5 with someone else? What kind of success does the solo practice have monetarily? Interested in thoughts and experiences. Is Attorney life flexible mid career? TIA

My 3L brief style

Here is how I brief as a senior law student

  1. Summarize the entire facts of the case using AI and boil it down to 2 sentences. Or use Oyez which I find is better than Quimbee

  2. Read the holding on oyez or ask AI

  3. MAYBE read the issue maybe

how am I doing

I’m SO HAPPY y’all are struggling too.

I am keeping up with the material (barely). However, HOLY GUACAMOLE THIS IS SOMETHING ELSE. Some readings I’m like “that was super easy”. Other readings I’m like “what the FRICK did I just read?” followed by a 3 hour deep dive of researching terms I didn’t understand.

Anyways it’s very comforting to know I’m not the only one. Every time I see a post about people struggling to finish the readings in time or not grasping a topic, I just think to myself “ayyeeee I’m right there with you”

Good news: We will get there eventually. Bad news: Books.

So before someone gets mad at my title, I am happy I am not alone, not that they are literally struggling.

Job interview help

I've been applying to jobs all summer while studying for the bar. By August, I still had no prospects.

Then, a firm reached out and offered me an interview. It wasn't my dream firm or an ideal fit, but it was the only opportunity I had, so I went for it. The interview went fine, and I was offered the job shortly after. The offer, however, isn't great (90k salary, 175 billable hours a month, and $38/hour until I receive my bar results. The only real upside is that they'll keep me on as a law clerk if I don’t pass.

Out of fear of having nothing lined up, I accepted the offer, and I'm supposed to start next week.

Now, in the past week or so, firms I applied to in July and early August have started reaching out for interviews. Even though I’ve already accepted the first job, I decided to see those interviews through. One of the firms, definitely bigger and a better fit for me, just invited me for a second interview. I also have another interview scheduled for tomorrow with a firm I really love.

The first firm is aware that I'm in a bit of a time crunch, but I’m really torn. I don’t want to burn bridges, but I also don’t want to settle when better opportunities.

I’m overwhelmed and could really use some guidance.
