How hard is it to get academically dismissed from law school?

I've started law school and was looking into the academic standing rules. At my school the minimum GPA to stay in good standing is 2.5. The curve is set at a 3.1, with max of 3.2.

I’m curious — how bad do you realistically have to do in classes to fall below that? Like, would you have to consistently bomb exams to end up with mostly C’s? Since law school grades are usually curved around a B/B+, is it actually tough to drop into dismissal territory unless you’re really struggling?

Just trying to get a sense of what “academic dismissal” looks like in practice.

What can I do after law school?

I love being a law student. Learning the laws and stuff are cool. It is a shame that hypos are just that, hypos. I wish there was a real life version of this courtroom stuff after graduating law school.

How to be efficient?

Hello,

I'm 1L in week two of class. I'm spending so much time doing the homework but I'm still behind. The reason is taking too much notes. For example for today I have around 6000 words of note for like 15 pages of tort.

I understand the solution is take less notes but easier said than done. The strategy would be to cut out anything superfluous but how am I supposed to know what's superfluous? I don't what's going to be on the exam. I imagine the exams are designed to be really hard so the rule applications aren't clear. It's going to be borderline cases or arguments that are a reach. And I'm guessing you really need to understand the rationale and the facts to apply it. I don't understand how can you know what information will be exam relevant ahead of time. There's also multiple choices on at least one of my exams and Im guessing the professor is going to make it as hard as possible so I need to know what the all the scholars in the books think about random topics and what all the restatements say so I need to note those too.

How does everyone else go about it

Backpack recommendations for 1L evening, working during the day

Hello ! I am in need of a new backpack to carry all of my stuff! I am a 1L in the evening program. I work during the day and then walk from the office to class after work. I have to carry my work laptop, my personal laptop, my books, notebooks, lunch, etc etc . I need a backpack that's (1) durable, and strong, so it doesn't break at the seams (2) Comfortable to carry on my commute to work and walk to class afterwards (3) can fit all my stuff (4) professionally aesthetic (if possible).

I don't want to break the bank, but the cheap bags are not it.

Thanks!

Would you take this offer?

Hi all, I’m hoping to gain some perspective.

I recently graduated from law school and sat for the July bar. I was an evening student, and worked full time at an investment management firm.

I am currently going through interviews for a role that would have me work alongside an investment firm’s GC / CRO in fund formation. I would also work with external counsel. This role offers experience in fund formation that could open doors to lateraling to big law later on (according to partners I’ve networked with). Total comp would be around $145k, full benefits paid for. I do not have student loans.

Is it worth taking this, or continuing to interview with the goal of joining a firm now? The later seems riskier because it means hoping a spot opens up.

CardiB Won her case

After watching Cardi B on trial from a civil lawsuit, I need to know which law school the alleged victim's lawyer went to and not apply. That lawyer should be utterly embarrassed by how he conducted himself throughout the whole trial. There was a reason why no other lawyer would take this case because they knew it was BS from the beginning, and rightfully so.

help - time management

okay so just started my first year of law school (woohoo) and despite the title the workload seems some what manageable rn especially as i’m just focusing on my classes right now. My issue is actual time management and doing tasks in the set amount of time I give myself.

I don’t want to sound like i’m full of myself but I know i’m extremely smart and even though we’ve only been in class for two weeks i’m the person everyone around comes to to clarify rules or applications in class because they know i understand it all super well and am also just good at explaining things.

My issue is i feel like it takes me longer than it should to get the full understanding out of a text. And that coupled with already poor time management skills leads me to sleep less and be more anxious so idk if there’s a solution here.

I should also add potentially the fic to all this is i have diagnosed ADD and i take medication which has helped tremendously with focus while working but not so much executive dysfunction of getting to work or completing tasks without too many distractions or in a timely manner(have an appt next week to discuss alternative medication)

Not sure if there’s some huge piece of the puzzle i’m just not thinking of

Best note-taking system for 1L handwriters?

Basically how do you keep up with your notes for reading and class? Do you brief cases directly in your casebook and type them up to your computer later? Any advice for not falling behind?

I’m three weeks into 1L and handwriting helps me retain info much better, but it takes me a long time. Typing my briefs doesn’t work for me and I struggle to stay organized that way. Right now I brief in my casebook, add professors’ comments during class, then rewatch lectures and handwrite notes into a notebook since I can’t write fast enough in real time. It helps me learn, but it’s very time consuming. Is this effective, or is there a better way for handwriters to manage notes?

Are there any successful lawyers who only take up cases they believe to be innocent?

Is Litigation a place for a person with actual Integrity and strong moral compass to be successful and highly paid at? Someone who doesn’t believe in lying, in defending the guilty who wants to create betterment for society.

I understand a few things like Public Interest Law and Civil/ Human Rights Law… but do they actually pay well? I’m sure no one wants to deplete their being for peanuts. I’d like to ask, is it possible?

Just got an 8/10 on a non-graded Contracts mini quiz. Should I withdraw?

My self esteem has cratered to a level I haven’t felt since I unhappily found out my prom date was an out lesbian. How can I recover from this? Doubtless next class everyone else will be showing off their scores (all 10/10s of course, fucking nerds) and when it finally comes time for me to show mine they’ll just laugh and laugh and tell me I have a small dick (5.8 inches is actually ABOVE the American average, not that they care) and I’ll cry and shit myself.

Should I just withdraw to save myself the embarrassment?

Visiting Student Experience Question

Hey everyone! I'm planning to do a visiting student semester during my 3L year. My current school has approved me to take up to 32 units at another institution, and I'm looking into schools that offer courses in my area of specialization (which my home school doesn't have).

Would love to hear about:

  • The application process and timeline
  • Personal experiences as a visiting student
  • Any tips or things you wish you'd known beforehand
  • Whether it was worth it overall

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Outline Strategies

I’m about a month into my 1L and have started to outline for topics covered in each of my classes this semester (torts, property, contracts). Every week I start to feel pretty confident about how I’m organizing my outline with only the most pertinent information from lectures/readings/case briefs, but as soon as I think I understand things one of my classes knocks me down and humbles my foolish 1L confidence. Today my property professor went over her outline for the right to exclude and the right to access and I was just like :) oh ok

How do you best strategize for outlines to gauge for true understanding? The Themis outline examples didn’t overwhelm me quite as much as my professor’s did, but I want to structure my outline in a way that is concise but provides depth of understanding. Obviously 1L is a trial and error process, I just want to feel like I’m heading in the right direction.

How to get a remote research assistantship?

Hello everyone, I’m a law student in one of the National Law Universities in India. I am looking to do some legal research (short term) under a professor or some professionals in this field but from different countries. I’ve been sending emails and LinkedIn texts but in vain so far. I am targeting the month of November. I’d be grateful for any help.

Transferring NC bar score to SC – what’s the timeline & job market really like?

First off- I am honestly unsure where I should post this, so insight on that would help as well if unwelcome here.

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some insight from South Carolina lawyers or anyone who has transferred their bar score there.

Background:

  • I’m an NC resident and went to law school in NC.
  • I’ve taken the bar three times in NC, and now have a score high enough to transfer to SC.
  • My lease in NC runs for another 6 months, so I’m trying to figure out what the realistic timeline looks like for the transfer/admission process.

Questions:

  1. If you’ve transferred to SC, what was your timeline like (application, approval, swearing-in, etc.)?
  2. How competitive is the SC job market for someone moving in from out of state?
  3. Are there particular areas in SC that are better for new attorneys starting out? My family is in western NC, so ideally I’d like to be closer to them if possible.

Really just trying to get my legal career started and provide for my family (me, my toddler, and my partner who is currently not working). Any guidance, advice, or personal experience would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

No Offered

3L started last Monday and today I got a call from the firm I spent my second half of 2L summer with just for them to tell me “[the partners] all liked you” but that had no intention of extending any offers right now.

Not really sure how to feel other than pissed and not sure how badly the panic will set in after the shock wears off. It sucks because this was the ideal firm for me to work for.

Really regretting letting my GPA fall during 2L now. But it is what it is, I guess.

Update: no panic, their loss, upward and onward. Joined an American Inn of Court, making new friends, and talking to lawyers who were in a similar situation to mine and who all ended up doing just fine just a few years out from graduation.

NYLE external camera recommendations

I am taking the NYLE on September 18th. For whatever reason, my MacBook Air M4 chip/camera is not supported by examplify and I need to buy an external camera. I bought one from Amazon last night and it didn't work. If anyone went through something similar and remembers the external camera they purchased that worked on examplifiy, that would be great! Thanks!

Not to be dramatic this early but how do u actually make friends

I try to make small talk at the beginning of class and it doesn’t go anywhere. I sit alone during all my breaks. Idk what I’m doing differently than others. I’m an approachable person. I’m conscious of the way I am. I watch other 1Ls walk to class together and sit together at lunch and I’m just a fly on the wall.
