University 🎓 Commuting to Uni

Having slight panic attacks I don’t live in Dublin I’m in the good old sunny south east anyway it’s about an hour and a half to UCD. I’m 18 and don’t turn 19 until July next year. Just looked up a return ticket to Dublin from where I live is 40€ which is 200€ per week…. I used to be on child tickets so the price wasn’t really that big of a concern but quickly realised I need to pay adult prices now.. I can’t apply for a leap card as I will only hold a child leap card you need to be 19 for a student one so wtf do I do . If anyone has any suggestions

I’ve fully got stoped during 12 pub getting on the bus with my child leap card clearly coming for the pub and he just said “your 15 are ya” and I just walked on

Normally I’d just lie and say I was 15 what they gonna do

Is the student leap card not a separate card from the young adult? I was in the same boat when I was in first year and I had a student leap card?

I’m not sure tbh I’m 18 and from what I read I’m not eligible for a student leap card until I’m 19

you can get the child's leap card still. it doesn't expire until your 19th birthday. once you're in the college you can get a student card as that's different to the 19 card

Does the young adult LEAP card not apply to those prices?

For an adult return ticket it’s basically €40 and with a young adult/ student leap card it’s a lot less but you need to be 19 to get it

16-18 for a student LEAP card, 19+ for young adult. You can get a student one after you register for college until you turn 19, then move to a young adult one.

Also, have you applied for SUSI (if you'd qualify)?

Ah okay . Yes I applied to susi but was over the limit by 120€ and didn’t qualify Thanks anyway

OK, and just in case it applies to you, if your household income this year is lower than last year, you can appeal the decision by SUSI based on change of circumstances. Worth having a chat with your patent(s).

A lot of busses will have options for people using them to commute everyday wexford bus is usually good for it

if you go onto the leapcard website there’s a student one that’s 16-18, then the other one is 19-25. When you apply for one and put in your date of birth they will automatically select the one that best suits.

Relax. Im 41 and pay for your adult tickets. FYI I look 41!! Don't overthink it. I commute about 1.5/2 hrs depending on traffic.

I mean, I'm 17 and i have a Student Leap card. I'm not sure what the problem is there?
But most Bus services don't care if you sue the child one and if they do then just pay adult price when you HAVE to/are questioned and use the child the rest of the time.
I hope this helps keep yout costs down but I would start considering other modes of transport if at all possible
