These opinions are generally uninformed, and usually based on:
- Points in Maynooth being lower than Trinity or UCD
- Maynooth being a small town rather than a big city
In reality, the train to Maynooth will get you into Dublin city centre in about the same time as a bus would from Belfield. There's nothing stopping you enjoying everything Dublin has to offer, but you also get to benefit from the pubs and cafes that are on your doorstep in Maynooth and the smaller community feel.
The points being lower that Trinity or UCD is not a sign of course quality, but instead of socioeconomics. In Ireland, most people go to the university that's nearest to them. For Ireland's wealthiest and most densely populated South Dublin postcodes, that's Trinity and UCD. These students are more likely to have been able to afford tutors and other supports to optimise their performance in the Leaving Cert, hence achieving higher points.
Nothing wrong with aiming high, so put Trinity down if there's a course there that you're interested in. But if you like a course in Maynooth and think it's an environment you will thrive in, go for it!

Thanks. Trinities far too high, love it but got 450 in summer exams and a H7 in maths so I’m trying to be realistic

During the May 68 revolution there was written in graffiti, "be realistic, demand the impossible."

I just finished my 4 year bachelor of science in maynooth loved every year of it! Student environment is amazing students union and night outs in maynooth are unlike Dublin - the maynooth town just turns into a university campus ( I’m biased ) but don’t gage how well a university is based on points - points are used to show how many places are in a course - maynooth offers a large amount of places for arts courses compared to other universities therefore their point requirements are lower. Pick what you want to do and where you want to go, you will meet new people. Don’t let ur friends persuade you otherwise it’s your degree and decision at the end of the day

I’ve known plenty of people who went to Maynooth and they enjoyed it, at the end of the day it’s up to you and what works best for you! Don’t listen to anyone hating, Good luck

do not listen to anyone in school about universities. they tend to not know shit and its often just for bragging rights due to the perceived prestige of whatever college which ironically tends to indicate the opposite of the quality. I wouldnt even go near dublin unless you had mammy and daddy paying for shit

Your mates are probably just kidding but there are a lot of people that have convinced themselves the only two universities in existence are trinity and ucd, and since the points at maynooth are typically lower than ucd and trinity they have it in their head that maynooth is poor education when it is a very high quality university.
