If I bought a real speed trap camera and put it in front of my house, could the police ticket those people with the data I provide? I'm tired of getting the mail and seeing people shoot down my road going 50

(A) Catching people speeding in a place where they commonly speed is not what a speed trap is.

(B) The legality of speed cameras are jurisdiction dependent. There are several states where they are not legal.

(C) If legal in your state, you would need to get approval and a contract from your local government (city/county) to install your own speed camera. This would be a tough step for a private citizen to do. You would be better off to lobby your local elected official to have them work on getting a speed camera installed in your neighborhood.

And B) Where they are legal, there are likely regulations about how and where they are installed / maintained -- its not just 'plop camera here issue tickets'.

Also, in some scenario where tickets _were_ issued based on that data, the ticket-ees could challenge the validity and you'd be an organization of 1 having to go to court to defend the installation, calibration, and maintenance of that device, often.

So we should try to catch people speeding in areas where they don’t speed?

And what do you think a speed trap is?
