RULE 2

Many people seem to stumble over this rule. This is a hobby Locksport community.

If you want to learn to pick locks that you own, that aren't installed in anything or otherwise in use, then this might be the place for you.

If you want to pick something because you need to get into it or through it, then this is NOT the place for you.

One of our most frequently asked questions is "What lock picks should I get?", our member Spoon has created this helpful document:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1P4_g_a7UTF8b4JAEVaH3lBL_dvT4-eRvFT_Jh-bx1lA/edit?pli=1#heading=h.9o577kfmhdj7

REQUESTING A BELT:

Follow the instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/wiki/beltranking#wiki_belt_request_formatting

Make sure you include the belt color you're requesting, the model of the lock you've picked, and any evidence to the requirements for the belt you're requesting (eg. photo/video/etc.)

Often questioned on how to attach a photo to a modmail. You cannot include a photo, but you can include a link to a photo, video, or even to a Reddit post where you have attached a photo and/or video.

In addition to our rules, please do not refer people over to r/Locksmith unless they are a locksmith per a request from a moderator there, you can direct them to r/AskALocksmith instead! https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/comments/x9ed2a/hey_guys_mod_of_rlocksmith_here_remember_a_while/

If you want to join our Discord community, it is very active and many pickers are there to help you with your specific locks or just to chit chat, you can go here: https://discord.gg/lockpicking

Master lock 575 took me longer than I’m going to say to get open but today it clicked and got it three times in a row. Finally feel like I’m actually getting the hang of this and not just getting lucky

Can't really put my finger on why but I absolutely love picking this Master Lock Pro Series 6835.

I just got it last week off Kijiji and it pretty much instantly became my comfort lock. Something about it just feels so good.

First non practice lock

Morning from the sunny UK.

Had an interest in picking for many years but only recently decided to grab a practice set from a particular online retailer. The set itself is pretty garbage, and I’ll start hunting for something a bit sturdier.

Been working on an old Wilkinson padlock I have in my garage. Rusted to hell so possibly not the best example.

Finally cracked it 👍. Been doing it over and over, frustratingly finding sometimes I can do it dead quick, others I’ll be messing around with it for ages 😆

Any hints and techniques for me? Found fairly quickly best not to put too much tension on it as seems to make more difficult.

Picked to control first and “naturally”. Don’t think I could’ve gotten operate without having the key to compare. On Operate, pins 1 & 2 are set higher and pins 3 & 4 are set lower than control.

I don’t post a lot so I also wanted to say thank you to everyone who takes time to post and help others. Learn something every day.

Does a vice help?

I’m having hard time on more advanced locks, trying to pick them all in hand. I see everyone online using a vise is it that big of a help?

Security Pins

Is there a list available of locks showing the number and type of security pins ? I’ve looked at the belts list for difficulty rankings but it doesn’t seem to mention pins. I’d like to work on a lock with a single security pin, then one with 2, then 3 etc. I probably won’t be making my own as it’s too fiddly for me.

My Covert Instruments Covert Companion after being sent through the washer and dryer. These are the only parts I found, so my dryer now has a lock picking kit somewhere inside it...

I decided I wanted to try to make a couple of pins that look like chess pieces. I'm in the neighborhood, but not quite there yet.

Regardless, I think these look good. A couple more and I'll be ready to put together another challenge lock!

Yale 112/50mm I don’t exactly know what I did but I suddenly got way better feedback than usually and it opened after less than a minute. I was so confused that I couldn’t even enjoy opening the shackle 😅 I think I accidentally tensioned not only the first but also the second disc on my other tries but that’s just a guess. Still have to learn a lot about dd’s!

picked Sparrow Cutaway

Post image

Bought my first cutaway lock the other day, and after fiddling around with it for a bit, I picked it! Used the sparrow picks it came with, very good quality. The cutaway was a lot better than any acrylic locks I've got, and was actually a bit of a challenge! What is anyone else's experiences with cutaways or sparrow materials?

I finally did it.

After three years of my boss telling me to not even try(and one bricked lock from my first attempt) I finally opened it with a rake without resetting it. Also managed to fix the one I bricked without the reset cradle so that’s nice.

I finally got the confidence after picking the PL 410Pro within 5 minutes of opening. So decided to buy two new smart key locks when I was at Home Depot getting some anyways for a job I was doing.

Onto purple belt.(side note, if anybody has recommendations for the nonpicking requirements that won’t take too much time/money/effort, that’d be helpful.)
