I paid $750 for my ETR 4.5-30x and worth every penny. My first scope but extremely happy with it, can see targets clear at a mile.

I believe I have the APRS1 as well and I think it’s great, but again it’s my first so nothing to compare to.

I bought two of those Ares ETR 4.5-30x56. One on my target rifle and one on my hunting rifle. The Ares ETR 3-18x50 pairs up nicely with my CZ 457 22lr training rifle 🤪

copy/paste from the comment to the other redditor above but:

sorry im a few days late but i stumbled across this and am looking at these exact scopes. im torn between the 4.5-30 and the 3-18 mostly because i do want to try and stretch to 1k yards for fun but i will be hunting with this rifle as it is my only bolt gun.

Do you feel the 4.5 limits your target acquisition at like 60 yards? rifle is a 6.5CM.

Its a fine scope for beautiful weather and perfect conditions, but performance definitely suffers as the clouds roll in.

Wow! May have to grab that 4.5-30 Athlon instead of the Bushnell MPED or Vector Continental! I wonder how long these are on sale, or if there are any promo codes I could snag too...

Definitely a step up in glass. But on the 4.5-30 ETR the reticle is a bit thick (shared with the 3-18) if that’s something that’d bother you.

I almost put a PST II 5-25 on my 9in 300blk bolt just because how good the price is.

5

u/shards397 25d ago

Anyone know if the Gen 2 Ares ETRs have different glass than the Gen 1s?

u/Mountain_man888 25d ago

If you are able to access Expert Voice, the Athlon prices are less than what’s posted above as well

2

u/Xander_Cain 13d ago

Do you know if that is the standard expert voice pricing or if I should pull the trigger immediately. I have access but have never used it.

1

u/Mountain_man888 13d ago

Not sure, I just checked when I saw this post but don’t own any or monitor it. I think it’s standard but know they run additional discount on random brands periodically so maybe you could get lucky and get it for cheaper but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

1

u/Mountain_man888 13d ago

Actually I just got an email saying they had outlet prices for Athlon

1

u/Xander_Cain 13d ago

Thanks, ugh reregistered on the site and they will only allow me to get the MOA version. Guess I’ll have to pony up $50 more and get The one linked here.

2

u/palookadook 5d ago

Oh damn they have the ETR in brown 🤤

u/helpmemynamewillnotf 26d ago

I've been thinking about building a .22 for nrl 22, but probably just more for fun as I don't have easy access to anything over 200 yards anymore. Would that Ares btr 4.5-27 be a good option?

u/medicalboa 25d ago

How do people like the Steiner t6xi series? I’ve been interested in those

5

u/sparkybk 25d ago

Couldn't tell you about the scope itself, but Steiner=Burris and Burris customer service is dog shit and I am making it my mission to tell as many people as possible to steer clear for that reason.

5

u/Hertz_allot 25d ago

They just replaced my scratched ocular glass on my T5Xi. Paid shipping labels, No charge, no questions. Could not be happier. Only took like 2 weeks

2

u/Bad_Shot_264 25d ago

It’s more of a duty long range scope than a competition long range scope. But it does have the same reticle as the XTR pro. The turrets are locking and harder to adjust zero stop and such. Having had both, for PRS I’d choose the Burris, for a Mil/Le gun I’d choose the Steiner.

u/1baruch 25d ago

Got a T6xi 3-18 scr2 on my ar10👍

2

u/jhnvan 24d ago

Cries in restricted itar because canada....

2

u/fatfuckery 22d ago

MPED for $680 or nah?

3

u/Trollygag Does Grendel 22d ago

That is a good price, but maybe more of a normalish good price. The ETR is like half priced.

2

u/fatfuckery 21d ago

Thanks, Trolly. Oh man, I really liked the MPED reticle with the little half mil dots in between the tree branches... But that's probably a stupid reason to forgo the ETR's superior optics for basically the same price, huh?

I like the ETR glass and turrets better. But they sre both good optics. ETR would be a no brainer if it was the bronze one.

1

u/fatfuckery 16d ago

Ended up getting the ETR (the black one, not fucking with bronze! LOL). Thanks for setting me straight!

3

u/Booted_notchback 8d ago

Is there a big difference between the Ares ETR Gen1/2?

2

u/palookadook 5d ago

Need an optic for a 20" Criterion Core 5.56 build I'm working on... definitely some good options here, gonna have to do some research!

2

u/ShrimpBuffets 26d ago

That better not be the red XTR Pro

2

u/sparkybk 25d ago

It is, in fact, the red one.

1

u/d_student 26d ago

ETR 3-18 looks to be 650

1

u/nope_noway_ 25d ago

Got excited when I saw the $584🥲

Got the Ares ETR 4.5-30 for my rimfire build and just bought a second for my AR10. Absolutely love the thing, especially the cost.

That's something we deal with a lot for rimfire matches actually. Every match will have multiple targets around 50 yards. It can be a bit of a pain to find them at first but you can either get a co-witness red dot or, if you're cheap like me, just use the top of the elevation knob to line up a bit better. That said, most of the targets were shooting at that distance are tiny, anything reasonably sized takes zero effort at 4.5. Wouldn't try to clear a house with it, but 50 to 100 yards isn't really a problem.

The flipside of that is that you could definitely hit 1000 yards with an 18 X optic but depending on what you want to use it for I don't really think that that 1.5 lower base magnification is really worth losing out on nearly double the top end.

1

u/Tourist_Careless 22d ago

Awesome thanks!

I just got the Ares ETR 3-18x50 and the Midas Tac HD 5-30x56 on sale last month. Already took them out to a couple 1,000 yard range days and a pig hunt, very satisfied for the money

I’m not a hunter so it’s hard for me to answer that unfortunately. I typically start my range day at like 700+ yards so I don’t play with shorter distance unless I’m zeroing. I think this scope does anything you want it to, you can get to 1000yds with the 3-18x I’m certain.

2

u/wdraino1-1 22d ago

Yes 18x is plenty of magnification for hits at 1000 but it definitely makes it easier to be more precise and spot your impacts with the 30x

1

u/wdraino1-1 22d ago

I got the Midas Tac 5-30 to replace the EP5 on my 6.5 CM which is not a rifle I hunt with due to the fact that it weighs 14.2 lbs unloaded, so it’s really just something I shoot on the range. The 3-18x50 on my 6arc is still plenty of mag to get repeatable hits on my 18” target at 1,000 yards, but the fact that it is lighter and less massive of a scope makes it better for walking with and taking in/out of the jeep or truck for a quick shot.

Any recommendations on scope rings? Looking for a 30mm mount.

Any of the Athlons listed above

1

u/max1mx 15d ago

Thanks for this. I hopped on the Steiner. It seemed like a good deal, but maybe I should have got the bushel as recommended and saved some money.

1

u/Xander_Cain 13d ago

Ok so I have a LaRue Grendel match upper that needs a scope.

Should I go for the PST II 5-25 MRAD or the Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30?

1

u/Trollygag Does Grendel 13d ago

ETR

1

u/Chez92 13d ago

Thinner stadia lines on the 6. That's my only complaint on the APRS1. With that being said, hitting ipsc targets at 1300 yards wasnt too difficult on my 18" 6.5 creedmoor using the aprs1.

1

u/Xander_Cain 13d ago

Ok ordered the ETR 4.5-30. Now to find a good deal on a mount for that 34mm tube.
