Hello, for the past couple of weeks I decided to go on adventure and create something nice for people.

In my family and friends I saw some struggles with tax understanding so I developed a 100% free tax tool for Luxembourg and cross borders - feedback very welcome! 🥳

I know there are maybe plenty of things to fix but I want to make it a community driven tool so I am eager to hear the feedback and improve it.

For me it is dogs without leash, drivers leaving rond-point without signaling, people who constantly say gare is dangerous, radio commercials that have a car horn in them, people who don’t reply to my emails and above all, people who reply to my emails but without adding the cc’ed person.

I am planning to relocate here soon, but I’m seeing a lot of people move abroad from Luxembourg. It’s seems like such a beautiful place and can’t understand why people would do that? What are your thoughts?

After great working in both Belgium and Germany, I came here for better package and compensations. I have been trying here for about 4 years but all I was met with is horrific working experiences that even led me to seek help and spend thousands of euros in psychological support.

From what I read here, it seems some people are doing fine. Am I the only one with such traumatic experiences?

I went to the Kobo website and just out of curiosity, I changed the country to Luxembourg.
I noticed it was in French.
I understand the natives speak Luxembourgish as their mother tongue, and they learn German and French in school.
But why was French chosen?
I get that French and German are more common than Luxembourgish, but I would have thought if the natives had a choice, they'd choose German since Luxembourgish is basically a dialect of German and therefore they'd be more comfortable with German than French since it's so much closer to their native tongue.

Anyone else got this? Wtf, and where are the casernes?

In another thread about Americans getting citizenship through descent, I had a few interactions with others who pushed back against me for saying I am Luxembourgish due to having citizenship, or against people feeling like they have a connection to Luxembourg due to having ancestors from there. It was then pointed out to me that there is a different understanding in Luxembourg on who is considered to be Luxembourghish.

So, I'm curious, in Luxembourg, who is considered to be Luxembourgish? Do you have to be born there? Have parents who were born there? Be a citizen? Speak the Luxembourgish fluently?

I want to have a better understanding of how people in Luxembourg/Europe think about these things so I don't accidentally offend them. Americans have very distinct ideas on what is cultural heritage and what is ethnic heritage, and I would love to know how non-Americans think about those things.

I am reading the stories on the IG account of "gare sécurité propreté" and the stories are not nice. I dont know when was the last time I went to Lux city for a walk, shopping, chilling, or so and I wondering if it is really that bad? I leave some stories here but they are posting more...

My wife and I don't want children. We knew this 10 years ago and this has not changed since then. If anything, seeing friends and family members have their kids very much confirmed our decision.

Our parents are aware of this but they frequently show that they are not really able to accept it. Many of our friends also seem to consider it weird that a happy and stable couple doesn't want to "take the next step" and have kids.

I don't talk about this at work, but my colleagues regularly start sentences with "Once you have kids...", whenever I tell anecdotes of concerts, festivals, long nights out etc. I don't react to those sentences because I don't want to have to justify our choice all the time. It's enough that my parents keep nagging us.

I am Luxembourgish born and bred and yet I wonder if this is a cultural thing or whether it's just something I perceive in my bubble. What do you people think? Is not having kids stigmatized? Is it expected of couples in Luxembourh that they have kids?

Yesterday early in the morning, on my way to work, I arrived at the central station and was walking fast with the crowd. I noticed two Eastern European women with black curly hair, one facing the flow of people, the other standing in the opposite direction. The first gave me a strange smile, and as the crowd pushed forward, the second one reached into the outer pockets of my bag. Luckily, I had nothing in those pockets. I wasn’t sure how to react and didn’t want to waste time, so I just kept walking. They were standing near the exit, close to the lost and found office, right in the middle of the pathway where people had to walk around them. I didn’t think much of it in the moment, but it’s worth sharing so others can stay alert. And would like to know what should I have done instead?

It was a nice area, during the day is full of people, shops and bars.

But seems that at night, since there are more controls in Gare (maybe the new Marriot?) a lot of drug dealers have moved there, like this police man says.

Is it that difficult for our local police to place a permanent garrison? And cameras? The problem is clearly visible.

Been here three years and I’m still single. Chats die, dates feel like interviews, and most apps are either empty or full of spam. I’ve tried bars, hiking groups, langu age meet-ups-nothing sticks. Being a non-EU national doesn’t help either.

Is everyone just looking for something casual, or have you managed to build a real relationship here? Where did you meet?

I grew up in Luxembourg, am Luxembourgish myself. But my parents don't come wealth since they were immigrants. I did well in school, became an engineer and can just barely afford something modest by carefully managing my finances. I understand that a large proportion of the population does not have the opportunities I had.

Friends around me are only affording stuff by being dual income in government or moved across the border. And this is just my friend circle of mostly smart guys from classique B/C section. I really wonder how everyone else is doing who did not even make it that far in school? Ofc education is not everything, but its generally correlated to finances.

If I am just getting by with my achievements by luck and hard work, what are the other Luxembourgers doing, who are not lucky or with the government? Don't you feel sca_mmed by our politicians and land owners?(who got rich in the process)

I am honeslty kind of sad and angry. Not for myself since i got lucky and am doing fine, but for my country and my fellow luxembourgers.

I do not believe in working for the government or the overbloated welfare company CFL just to earn more money than private. I believe in creating value to improve the world by hard work rather than disproportionally sucking out value from the economy just because of my passport.

I think the way our economy works by funneling money from less paid immigrants in the private sector to well paid luxembourgers in the public sector is actively discouraging any talented aspiring Luxembourger to really contribute to the private economy to their full potential. And I thinks thats not ok. Especially in the current housing market that disproportionally benefits luxembourgish owners who vote for the government that pays them in their gov job and also makes the rules for property ownership. Isn't this perverse?

What the f**k is happening to Lux (outside of Gare)?

In a single day I was able to spot 2 « slight » aggressions (verbally + aggressive behavior / posture).

How’s the city allowing this 💀Is there anything in-place to actually remedy this situation? (Not aware of any initiatives from the city)

Hi, looking for any thoughts/similar experience/wisdom!

We live in Denver, Colorado currently. Life is good here -- but my spouse has an employment offer in Luxembourg at the Uni and we're trying to decide whether to go for it. Although we knew nothing about Luxembourg a month ago, it seems to have what we're looking for - nice people, nice countryside, history, good cycling/hiking, good beer/wine, 1/2 day drive to the Alps/1/2 day train to a handful of cool cities. Is this the case?

We have twin toddlers, so this is a consideration, but seems there are reasonable childcare options? We realize it's an expensive country and housing is tight, but probably not much more so or equal to Denver? We see the weather is lousy a lot of the time, but it's like Seattle rain - you can still go for a run?

While my spouse has offer there, I would be looking to either work remotely for my current US employer or find new work - any advice here?

What else do we need to consider?

Edit/update: Crux of the matter is my employment as 'trailing spouse,' but If I understand correctly, at a basic level -

-If I were to arrange status with current US employer as 1099 contractor, I could qualify in Lux as "self-employed as a third-country national family member of a third-country national" https://guichet.public.lu/en/citoyens/immigration/plus-3-mois/ressortissant-tiers/membre-famille/exercice-activite-salariee.html

-I'd pay taxes, ccss, etc. in Lux and would exclude US tax under https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/foreign-earned-income-exclusion
