Sample: Nothing But by Skin

Submission Rules:

  • You can only submit one beat.
  • Beats can be any genre.
  • You have to use the sample in your beat, it should be recognizable. You can add other instruments and samples, but the sample should be a main element.
  • All submissions submitted before the deadline will be linked in the voting post; whoever gets the most votes there wins.
  • Ties are decided by whoever submitted the beat first. Reused beats from previous battles can't win ties.

Schedule:

  • Submissions: Friday 12:00 AM midnight (00:00) - Monday 11:59 PM (23:59)
  • Voting: Tuesday 12:00 AM midnight (00:00) - Thursday 11:59 PM (23:59)
  • Results: Thursday 12:00 AM midnight (00:00) - the winner takes over and posts the new submissions thread using the linked template on Friday asap.

Time is in UTC-5, the US Eastcoast time zone which is 6 hours behind European MEZ time and a good middleground between US Westcoast and Europe. You don’t have to wake up in the middle of the night to post the new thread, just make sure you do it on that day asap.

Question How much do you tighten your kicks after playing them in?

When you play drums in, the groove always ends up a little off the grid. I’m wondering how far people go afterwards to line the kick back up. Do you leave it mostly as played, just nudge the obvious misses, or do you really tighten everything so it’s close to the grid?

I notice that it makes me kind of paranoid if it’s too much off. More “on the grid” feels safe. And the velocity is still there. Curious how far you go with tightening once the take is down.

Question How do I really focus on learning how to rap?

I've been wanting to learn how to rap for years now, but I have attention issues, which makes it really hard to set any time aside for learning really... any hobbies. It's something I'm passionate about though, I try to freestyle sometimes but I'm terrible at it, my biggest issue is pausing because I can't think of what to say or what rhymes. I wrote a verse, it isn't terrible, not great either. I don't think it's bad for my first time writing though. I don't know why my brain makes it so complicated to even just set 20 minutes aside for shit, let alone hours, but it's something I wanna figure out.

I'm quitting most of my technology usage soon to focus on my art, I figured I'd add music as my main focus as well because it's important to me, so I'll probably do better at learning then... What can I do right now though? There's no way I can set hours aside to learn at the minute, my brain just isn't capable of that with how distracted I get. Are there any short excercises/drills that I can try to incorporate into my daily routine? I can start small and maybe build from there.

Question How do I make my tracks more diverse?

Hey guys, I’m just starting out and I keep running into the same problem. I can make a track in my usual style, but every time it feels like I’m repeating myself. I don’t really understand what exactly I’m missing or how to experiment better.

What helps you add more variety to your music? Do you focus on instruments, song structure, switching genres, or something else? Any advice or examples would be super helpful. Thanks!

Question beatmaking youtube channels more vibe cooking than tutorials?

heyo i make hiphop, rnb, trap and reggaeton and i’m trying to find some youtube channels that I can enjoy watching in my daily life. i’m not really looking for strict tutorials, more like producers cooking up beats, vibing, showing their process, studio sesions almost like watching a series. kinda influencer style more than teacher style. basically something fun to watch that also gives me inspiration. any recommendations?

Question Some basics that confuse me

Hi all!! I’ve only recently gotten into rapping and am researching some theory for a basic understanding. I’ve gone over quite a lot but was wondering if anyone could fact check any of what I’ve learnt as I can’t ask anyone else I know.

(I feel like I’m overcomplicating some and they're just not sinking in)

Bar:

A musical measurement of distance.

EG: Instead of asking for a 1 minute and 30 second verse, you can instead ask for a 16 bar verse (it’s more precise to rappers)

Speed in which we travel across these bars can change but the bars themselves don’t generally change much

A beat is a quarter of a bar

Typically the snare drum lands on the second and fourth beat and the kick drum lands on the first and third beat

“Rapping on beat” generally means landing words or syllables on top of the beat, but we don’t always rap on top of every single beat. We place words in between beats as well

There are different divisions:

  • Quarter beat (¼ beat) → When one note fills each beat
  • Half beat (½ beat) → Where there is two notes per beat

Cadence:

Rhythm and how you improvise lyrics to match the flow of background music? (I'm just going off youtube vids

Question How to write lyrics faster?

I want to learn how to write lyrics faster.. for me it takes me few days to a week or so to finish writing the full song cuz I'm slow af and it not even be that good.. it takes me about 30 min -1 hour or so to come up with atleast 2 bars and then don't know how to continue it etc. Do you have any tips or anything that could help me write lyrics faster? Cuz I wanna finish writing lyrics faster. For me writing lyrics is kinda of struggle cuz nothing comes up to my head mostly cuz my thoughts are empty and blank. And my memory is blocked same as my thoughts, which makes writing lyrics hard for me and then lyrics sometimes might come up as mid or bad but I spend all days writing it and putting my effort in it just so someone can call it trash. Please I really wanna write lyrucs faster cuz rn im about tp finish my last verse and I'm struggling to come up even with simple lyrics

Question How to achieve this stereo effect? (Earl Sweatshirt - “Heavy Metal aka ejecto seato!”)

I’ve been obsessed with the mix on this track, produced by Child Actor. The drums and sample feel super wide, like they’re panned to both sides, while Earl’s main vocal sits more centered. It creates this crazy immersive space without feeling muddy.

Right now, my only experience with this kind of effect is just cranking the “Width” on Ableton’s Utility tool, but I’m not sure if that’s the best or most nuanced way to get this sound.

How would you go about creating this kind of stereo separation? Is it just panning + reverb tricks, or are there other techniques (mid/side EQ, stereo imaging, etc.) that I should learn?

Edit: Another Child Actor-produced song with a similar wide vibe is “Spellling” by ELUCID. Both tracks also have this very wavy, slightly detuned feel. I assume that’s a kind of wow/flutter tape effect. Would love tips on how to recreate that too.

Question Surprising My Cousin With First Studio Session

Title pretty much says it all.

  • Anything I should do to prepare? I won't be making music.
  • How far in advance should I tell them? (Especially given they're anxious when it comes to things like this)

I've never been to a studio session but neither have they. They're pretty anxious but recently expressed how they'd want to get into the studio so I booked one for them.

Question How does it work for those who sell beats to people through YouTube?

I'm starting to promote my beats through YouTube, and since I don't have a BeatStars account, in case anyone is interested, I've posted my Instagram link to talk about it privately. What are the next steps? How does it work? Does he send me the money first and then I send the FL Studio project, where he can see the various patterns? I don't know how to explain it, but do I have to send the entire project or an MP4 file? And also, depending on this situation, how do you have security that protects the buyer?

Question Best Way To Layer Bass?

What’s the best way to layer sub bass to make songs slap like crazy? I’ve been using ReaGate and ReaSynth to automatically record MIDI layers. It gives me a lot of control over the low end. Anything else I should be doing?

What techniques are you using?

Best Synths for sub bass tones?

Best techniques/plugins for enhancing multiple low-end layers?
