Discussion I miss producer tags in song titles

I miss the feeling of downloading a full mixtape off DatPiff with perfect meta data so each song title looks like “Song Name (feat. Rapper) [prod. Beatmaker]”

Obviously Spotify and Apple Music have song credits for each track but it’s rare that producers and beatmakers get at-a-glance, in-title recognition, save for a few like Alch and Kaytra whose names have as much pull as the vocalists they work with.

Yeah idk thought I’d share, guess im gettin old.

Free beat for the first commenter but only if you put my shit in the brackets lol

Discussion This shit is addicting

I've been writing since 2020 more or less. And I've been recording over type beats for the last year. Now I'm on to making my own beats. I have so much to learn, and I'm by no means at the level that I want to be at, but holy shit, making beats is addictive as hell. I'm trying to do a lot of sampling, and oh my god, when you get everything together, and it clicks, and it sounds good, it's just the best feeling lmao.... Don't get me wrong. As a beginner, it gets frustrating, but if you give yourself some slack, and space to actually learn, it's great. This post is random and I'm not sure if it's gonna be seen as spam, but I just had to say it, this is fun as fuck, I can't wait to learn/do more shit lmao

Lofi Flip What's the point with rack units ?

Hi ! This is my first contribution to this subreddit.

so i use to make boom bap tracks with a maschine mk3 since a few time ago, trying to emulate the classical primo productions i love. i often feeld that what i produce is soulless, in comparsion with the og sound i try to replicate. I guess it's because of the gear i use, which is simply not the gear used in tracks i want to copy. my thougts are that a modern setup with a daw has not enough constraints to focalise clairly into that kind of sound, and maybe i must go for old machines to properly role play (lol). Like, because it's 2025 i know i can do beats cleanly, thats why i'm looking for the lofi grain, the dirt and stuff. the same need exist in dub for example, like, all can be done in abelton but some people prefer to use hh material from the 70s. For the extra it provides. And maybe also for the workflow. By thinking to change my setup to a dawless one, like mpc2000xl, sp1200 or so, i discovered equipboard.com. it allowed me to search for classic 90s producers setup, and especially dj premier. into gear lists i readed, my attention went to rackable units and .. whats really the point with em ? there is 12 bit samplers, syntetizers, effects, mixers, some "sound banks" like planet phatt,... all rackable stuff. Firstly, of what units is basically composed a complete rack like that ? Is it relevant to build a setup in an all in one rack, with a midi controller, for the producing puposes im thinking of ? If so, may this setup be suitable to live performance ? it make me think of old school jungle setup or even the racks in dub with preamps and old school tape delay. are they relatives ?

Thanks for reading

Question trying to find the name of a sample

Hi — trying to find the origin of a faint electric guitar lick used in two tracks: “i was in love with you” (numb the pain, khxznq & rehab) and “Do You Feel Like Life’s Not Worth Living Anymore?” (Auralyx & Evangeline <3). Can someone ID whether this is from a sample pack (Splice/Loopmasters/other) or a recorded guitar? Any pack names or original song references would be really great.

Discussion Feel like Hip hop is not the same

I started listening and producing around the come up of the Soundcloud era. It died so quick, artists like Xxxtentacion passed away right when started blowing up, and many other just seemed to fall off. Like lil baby for example, it's just not the same. I still found love in other artists though, like Future that has a really dope style. I mostly listen to the upcoming underground artists now, playboi carti, ken carson which are pretty big tbh, but also nettspend, 2hollis, etc.

Question what is the best way to work with artists and gain connections in genera as an underground/ upcoming producer?

ive been producing for about four years, i had a youtube channel that gained over 1k subs and 100k views in total. i ended up getting shadowbanned and havent been able to come back so i deleted the content from the channel. i made a couple of placements with underground artist with my biggest being the rapper foolio, but i just cant seem to find artists to stick with and make a mark with. i understand it is a slow grind and that things could eventually work out, but it feels like im behind in a sense. i see people my age and younger making a mark but it seems so difficult for me. like i feel like discord is a good option but if i just send beats to artists, how can i even gain a relationship with those artist or even make a profit from it. that is one of the main reasons i refrain from using beat stars and sites like that because the relationship is more important to me than just making profit, like yes i do want to make money from it but i want to be heard and a go to producer for artists. sad thing is tho i dont even know where to start so, any tips?

Question Can you make dope boom bap / hip hop without sampling?

I know sampling is a huge part of hip hop history, but I’ve realized it just doesn’t click with me creatively. Finding records with YouTube as only source available feels more like a chore than an outlet.

That got me wondering: do you think it’s possible to make boom bap / hip hop beats that still knock without relying on samples? Like building everything from scratch with instruments (the usual suspects .. kontakt , Arturia etc) and drum programming instead of digging through records?

Curious if anyone here has taken that route and what your experience has been. Does it still feel authentic to the culture, or do samples make up too much of the DNA?

Would love to hear perspectives and maybe some examples.

Question Do Concept Mixtapes exist?

Imagine a concept album, but it's a mixtape. Do these type of mixtapes exist? Cause I'm making a concept album (I've already made some beats) but rn the only type of beats that come to mind is sampled beats, and I can't spend any money for this project.

Question How do I go about getting a sample cleared as a nobody?

So I make music and I publish it on Bandlab, but I was working on this new project and I was really proud of it and I wanted to put it onto bigger streaming services, but the biggest problem is that in every single track it uses a sample. But I’ve already asked around and people say that I can’t do it or I’m gonna get sued. I’m broke so how in the fuck do I go about this as someone who’s just staring? Do I like DM the artists or something? I really want to release my music on Spotify or Apple Music one day but I just don’t know what I’m doing.

Question Where do I place the hook ?

So I was just thinking does it matter where I place my hook or can I just put it in the beginning and the end of the song ? Does it matter where you put it in

Question How do you keep your melodies simple enough and when are they too boring?

I've been producing for about 8 months now and I learned the basics of music theory and have been specializing on making better drums in the past months. I mostly produce trap beats, my main inspirations are yung lean, Pierre Bourne, playboi carti and souly (from Germany). Now my problem is, that I think my melodies right now are either too simple and boring or too complicated with too much stuff going on. i especially struggle with making hard beats like for example on whole Lotta Red. So my question now is how do you create melodies and chords that sound interesting and not boring but aren't too "crowded", so the artist still has space to work with.

Resource/Guide Daughter wants to be an MC

Hey y'all! Proud dad here looking for whatever insights you can offer.

My daughter (10) wants to make her own music. She has aspirations of being a rapper. Some of her favorites include Aesop Rock, Homeboy Sandman, and Prof. She's been working on her writing. But she wants to learn to do it all. She wants to learn how to program her own instrumentals.

I remember back in the day there were apps like Acid that had relatively easy loops to program. But many moons has passed since I've had an experience with it.

If anyone could suggest a good program for a kid to start learning with that isn't too daunting, but also doesn't have a Fischer Price sticker on it, it'd be appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Question Hip-Hop Parents: tell us a story of how your child or younger sibling is making music

I saw a thread here in this group about a father who is supporting his daughter’s dream. His daughter wants to be an MC. So I decided to create this thread to see if I can get more of those types of replies. I’m interested in hearing the stories of how a parent or a sibling is supporting their youngling in their dream to make music.

So let me know your thoughts and your story if you have one. How is it going with your child or your younger sibling who is on the course to make beats or rhyme?

I spent most of my life without my father so I feel like this type of subject is very important to me as well as those who may have been without one of their parents. From here on that show our people that we can be better parental figures and guide the youth towards a better tomorrow.
