SERIOUS Posts Regarding Raja Jackson Will Be Removed
This is an entertainment wrestling event and an assault being committed. The assault is not actually martial arts related in any way other than that the aggressor was trained. The posts being made have also all violated our Spam and Drive-By/Low Effort posting rules up to this point.
This topic has also brought a bunch of racists out of the woodwork and there are so many reported posts that it’s going to take this mod team hours to clear the Mod Queue.
I am shutting this down now. No further posts about the Raja Jackson assault will be tolerated and bans will be issued for posts that violate more serious established rules as we work through the queue.

Weekly Beginner Questions Thread
In order to reduce volume of beginner questions as their own topics in the sub, we will be implementing a weekly questions thread. Post your beginner questions here, including:
"What martial art should I do?"
"These gyms/schools are in my area, which ones should I try for my goals?"
And any other beginner questions you may have.
If you post a beginner question outside of the weekly thread, it will be removed and you'll be directed to make your post in the weekly thread instead.

QUESTION Front kick comparison. Taekwondo vs Karate
I’ve noticed the front kick in these two styles seems to be performed differently, I was wondering if anyone on here has any insight into why that is. I’ve noticed in Taekwondo (at least WT style tkd which I’m experienced in) always pivots the supporting leg when doing front kick (Ap Chagi). I’ve noticed however in karate (referring to Shotokan) don’t seem to pivot their supporting leg during their front kicks (Mae Geri). Let me know your thoughts as to why these two styles execute this differently.

QUESTION Vertical vs Horizontal punch and thumb placement
I was wondering what different styles of martial arts have to say on what way you are taught to punch, and what the reasoning is? My words on it come from someone with an Isshin-ryu Karate background: We do a vertical punch with your thumb on top. (do a thumbs up, bend your thumb at the finger joint and put it on top without putting it in the “hole”). i was taught this is good for majority 2 reasons. 1. makes sure your top 2 knuckles are pointing out, since that’s what we strike with in this style. 2. putting the thumb on top locks the wrists better so you are less likely to injure yourself. I’ve also seen that the vertical punch may be faster than the horizontal? What are people’s opinions from different training backgrounds?

QUESTION Martial arts to get built
Hi Im 21 and got a little bit of muscle and a little bit of fat and do MUAY THAI on rare occasion (to learn how to fight and 2 to get built); I ask my instructors if there are any exercises I can do outside of class to get better and they shrug it off or say hit the heavy bag for 30 minutes. Anyway I was wondering what martial art would get me built the quickest or just built in general? And is the instructor advice sound

DISCUSSION Can a 7 year old be a Karate black belt?
A friend of mine stated that their 7 year old child is a karate black belt. Her child has been doing it for almost 5 years and has competed and mastered the martial art. Is that possible? I'm totally uneducated on the subject.

QUESTION I’ve learned to rotate all the way through on my punches but I’m losing balance.
I saw recently a tip to pretend someone is pushing your right shoulder (orthodox stance) all the way over when throwing a cross to get the full rotation. I definitely am getting better rotation because I can feel it, however I’m losing balance and it’s harder to return back to my stance.
Am I rotating too much?? Will I get used to it over time?

DISCUSSION If most eastern traditional martial arts view a first dan simply as a beginner with competency at the basics, then why is there so much hate towards child black belts? If they can correctly execute the techniques against someone in their weight class, shouldn’t that be enough?
