Who is an "unknown" math rock band, from your city/area, that everyone should know about?

Please include links to their music if possible.

Honestly despite feeling like I listen to loads of it I rarely know any of the bands people here seem to class as the 'big names' šŸ˜‚

But I'd hazard a guess that Cleft and You Slut! Aren't too well known out of South West England.

u/BigOldBee 8d ago

I'm in the Midwest USA and I know of, and love both of those bands.

Good!

I got to go to the memorial gig for the guy from Cleft who died a few years back, sad but utterly glorious. Something like 9 guitarists on stage at once doing their songs!

4

u/AreFriendsElectric 8d ago

ATG! When we got to witness 'The Beft'. Dan's wife was one of those guitarists on stage.

5

u/one-piecesuit 8d ago

(American from Tx here) In the early days of bandcamp I found You Slut! scouring the genres index for weird stuff when math rock was still extremely obscure and I can’t be the only music nerd to have found them then. I forget which of the two Cleft gentlemen found my SoundCloud initially but we became internet acquaintances in the early 2010s and I was very heartbroken to hear of Dan’s passing in 2018.

u/HumOfEvil 7d ago

Ah cool.

Glad to hear Dan made a wider impact, lovely bloke making banging riffs!

u/Galaxy_god92 8d ago

Have you ever heard of the band Pharaohs ? they were from Kent England

3

u/HumOfEvil 8d ago

Nope! I'll look them up!

5

u/Galaxy_god92 8d ago

I linked their song Photosynthesis in my first comment, they were one of my favorite bands for a while I hope you like them!

2

u/duchampsfountain 8d ago

Literally just discovered them the other day. Really enjoyed their stuff, and it's a big shame they seemed to fly under the radar then just split without being recognized.

u/ortino 7d ago

Really??! What part of SW England?

From Michigan:

Charles the Osprey

Team Two (RIP)

Parker Projection (RIP)

I’ve had the opportunity to play with and watch these bands over the years and each of them rip incredibly hard. I’d argue that all three of these projects hang with any of the most popular math rock bands of the past couple decades. I both love how cool it is that bands of this caliber can exist solely within a local scene and also wish that they would have been able to do their thing on a slightly higher level.

2

u/BigOldBee 7d ago

Love Charles the Osprey.

2

u/luciusfoxshred 7d ago

Absolute KINGS of their craft

2

u/BigOldBee 7d ago

Just listened to the other two bands you listed. Really like both of them as well. I was in an experimental metal band back in the early 2000's and we always loved coming up to Michigan on tour. So many good bands, and great places to play.

1

u/luciusfoxshred 6d ago

Hell yeah! What band?

Michigan has some truly amazing projects. I’m in Kalamazoo and the DIY community is something special. I feel fortunate to have such great regular access to good live music.

2

u/BigOldBee 6d ago

I've heard your band too. Good stuff.

I was in a band called Lafcadio. I don't think we ever played Kalamazoo, but we definitely played Ypsilanti, Grand Rapids, Holland, Detroit, Lansing, and I'm sure there's some others I can't remember. We used to play a lot with If He Dies He Dies and other Friction bands.

Now I'm in a mathy guitar/drum duo. We're currently wrapping up our third album, and trying to plan some mini-tours.

(in Parentheses)

2

u/luciusfoxshred 5d ago

Hell yeah! We got to play with Dies last year. They’re gnarly.

And hell yeah! I’ll check y’all out! If you’re ever trying to book around kzoo hit us up! If we can’t play we can definitely point you in the direction of folks that can help set something up.

1

u/BigOldBee 5d ago

So glad Iffy got back together. Where's that new album?!

1

u/luciusfoxshred 5d ago

Y’all are rad! A lot of this reminds me of the Cavern EP that came out when they were a two piece. Def reach out if you’re trying to get up this way. We’re gonna be in Bloomington later this year, but we def wanna get back to Indy sometime next year.

1

u/BigOldBee 5d ago

Thanks! Do you already have a show booked in Bloomington? It's not too far from here. We will definitely try to make it. Maybe even try to get on the bill for sure. Let me know if/ when you want to come to Indy. We will make it happen.

Is or was?

Everyone should know Sweep the Leg Johnny and Check Engine from Chicago.

4

u/AimingByPFM 8d ago

Also, Lustre King. They're the band that first got me into Math Rock.Ā

3

u/javoss88 7d ago

Also Snooze

3

u/gardenwardo 7d ago

Love Sweep the Leg Johnny. Ashamed they’ve faded into obscurity

5

u/Consistent-Doubt964 8d ago

I don’t know that they’re unknown but I never see anyone mention Planets. They only put out one record but I think it’s amazing.

3

u/Main_Caramel5388 8d ago

Planets is dope

4

u/locust_manor 8d ago

Witt

Swift Intruders

Japandi

San Diego’s finest

5

u/brimcarb 7d ago

Great list… consider listening to Band Argument and Positioner, two SD bands that are current. And Stage Kids, who haven’t played a show in a while, but suspect they are still around.

2

u/locust_manor 7d ago

Yeah they’re great!

2

u/BigOldBee 7d ago

Really enjoyed that Witt EP. Going to check out the other two you listed today. Thanks for sharing!

5

u/PlebS14 8d ago

Here in Leeds, UK we have WHAT? NAH - I know they’ve been mentioned in here before by me and by others but they are still relatively unknown and for me are a perfect Clever Girl-esque band

5

u/rjfx43 8d ago

Self-Evident

2

u/tonsofgrassclippings 7d ago

The absolute best.

4

u/gotsubverted 8d ago

The Refectory

5

u/Bmaster5000 8d ago

The Warmups out of Kansas City, more emo rock than math rock but those guys kick ass.

7

u/onecharmingschmuck 8d ago

Via Luna out of KC as well!

6

u/one-piecesuit 8d ago

Upvote for Via Lunaā¤ļø I’m from Texas but befriended them through playing shows together. Their drummer Mike later introduced me to another local KC band looking for a bassist, called Le Grand.

4

u/one-piecesuit 8d ago

They’re more psychedelic prog than math rock but tastefully weird none the less. Also not necessarily unknown (in DFW) but deserves way more attention for sure. Dome Dwellers

5

u/pacific_plywood 7d ago

Of Two Minds is nice

3

u/timrunevscas 8d ago

the gangly youth out of Melbourne, FL

3

u/thefirehairman 8d ago

Angine De Poitrine from Quebec, Canada

They're amazing, I hope they'll get super big!

1

u/BigOldBee 7d ago

Heard these guys for the first time about a week ago. Love it.

3

u/No_Eye6142 8d ago

2

u/ItJustGotRielle 7d ago

Yessss seriously you guys need to know about Tensor. The nicest, coolest guys there is. Mathy djent, huge spread of influences including dark jazz and metal.

They have a Youtube channel too, and just dropped a new song recently!

Also kind of irrelevant but interesting, the drummers younger brother is the famous Pop singer Bazzi who has almost 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify lol

1

u/Galaxy_god92 8d ago

This album came out on Kurt Travis’ label Esque records a long time ago now, these guys were my favorite local band for a long time

2

u/davideboltagon 8d ago

My friends in Casamatta just released their first full length.

2

u/Low-Lab8577 8d ago

Dear Maryanne! Great friends and played with them on a few bills. More emo tinged than full on math rock (they count in my books).

2

u/FunAstronomer9985 8d ago

Ravenous tanuki out of melbourne, FL. They’re recording an ep atm that has a lot of potential.

The Object at the End of History and Collapsar are two of the best bands I’ve ever seen live. TOATEOH has a few songs on all the streaming services. Collapsar, who I’d say was very Car Bomb with fewer effects and even fewer vocals, aren’t easily found. I’d kill to hear ā€œGodzilla vs. Space Godzillaā€ again!!

Valerian Swing?

3

u/mrgwamt 7d ago

Bellini?!

2

u/bashfuleve 7d ago

Check out Tenebre! Album is In Everything Give Thanks. SF Bay Area. Only album, maybe 2003 or 2004?

Pretty, melodic, finger tappy, and their bass player uses a standup bass, so that’s a unique quality that I think adds something.

2

u/glenn_maphews 7d ago

maybe not unknown but The Joint Chiefs of Math were great

2

u/HoldenOlden 7d ago

Expeditions from Cincinnati

also, Apollo’s Arrows from England is a longtime favorite that no one seems to mention.

My town of Uppsala in Sweden has Noodles For My Poodles and Comprehending (my band)

1

u/BigOldBee 6d ago

Both very cool. I like your band a lot. I listened to your new album. Flourish, was my favorite. Keep up the good work!

1

u/menkomigen1 6d ago

Thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed both bands! :)

Cherry Smoke from Memphis, more post hardcore and shoegaze, but they have some cool time changes and tapping

cherry smoke, prisoners

1

u/cosmicboy01 6d ago

Here in Peru we have Wanderlust, they are very cool and locally I would recommend a band from Trujillo called El mejor verano de mi vida

1

u/BigOldBee 6d ago

Got any links to their music?

1

u/LetterheadAgitated70 6d ago

best around here is ASIWYFA, started about 10 miles from my house

1

u/Bulky_Ad_3608 5d ago

They probably would protest being called a math rock band but Many Arms from Philly/NY were very good.

1

u/OwnUnderstanding7143 3d ago

I don’t know if this counts but HTX guy here and you NEED to check out this band called Second Place. Most amazing emo singer I’ve heard with an awesome range and vibrato. Very algernon cadwalader vibes. Also if you want to check out my band My Callisto.
