Who is an "unknown" math rock band, from your city/area, that everyone should know about?
Please include links to their music if possible.

From Michigan:
Iāve had the opportunity to play with and watch these bands over the years and each of them rip incredibly hard. Iād argue that all three of these projects hang with any of the most popular math rock bands of the past couple decades. I both love how cool it is that bands of this caliber can exist solely within a local scene and also wish that they would have been able to do their thing on a slightly higher level.

Love Charles the Osprey.

Absolute KINGS of their craft

Just listened to the other two bands you listed. Really like both of them as well. I was in an experimental metal band back in the early 2000's and we always loved coming up to Michigan on tour. So many good bands, and great places to play.

Hell yeah! What band?
Michigan has some truly amazing projects. Iām in Kalamazoo and the DIY community is something special. I feel fortunate to have such great regular access to good live music.

u/BigOldBee 6d ago
I've heard your band too. Good stuff.
I was in a band called Lafcadio. I don't think we ever played Kalamazoo, but we definitely played Ypsilanti, Grand Rapids, Holland, Detroit, Lansing, and I'm sure there's some others I can't remember. We used to play a lot with If He Dies He Dies and other Friction bands.
Now I'm in a mathy guitar/drum duo. We're currently wrapping up our third album, and trying to plan some mini-tours.

Hell yeah! We got to play with Dies last year. Theyāre gnarly.
And hell yeah! Iāll check yāall out! If youāre ever trying to book around kzoo hit us up! If we canāt play we can definitely point you in the direction of folks that can help set something up.

u/BigOldBee 5d ago
So glad Iffy got back together. Where's that new album?!
1
u/luciusfoxshred 5d ago
Yāall are rad! A lot of this reminds me of the Cavern EP that came out when they were a two piece. Def reach out if youāre trying to get up this way. Weāre gonna be in Bloomington later this year, but we def wanna get back to Indy sometime next year.
1
u/BigOldBee 5d ago
Thanks! Do you already have a show booked in Bloomington? It's not too far from here. We will definitely try to make it. Maybe even try to get on the bill for sure. Let me know if/ when you want to come to Indy. We will make it happen.

The Warmups out of Kansas City, more emo rock than math rock but those guys kick ass.

Via Luna out of KC as well!

u/one-piecesuit 8d ago
Upvote for Via Lunaā¤ļø Iām from Texas but befriended them through playing shows together. Their drummer Mike later introduced me to another local KC band looking for a bassist, called Le Grand.

Theyāre more psychedelic prog than math rock but tastefully weird none the less. Also not necessarily unknown (in DFW) but deserves way more attention for sure. Dome Dwellers

Also kind of irrelevant but interesting, the drummers younger brother is the famous Pop singer Bazzi who has almost 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify lol

Dear Maryanne! Great friends and played with them on a few bills. More emo tinged than full on math rock (they count in my books).

The Object at the End of History and Collapsar are two of the best bands Iāve ever seen live. TOATEOH has a few songs on all the streaming services. Collapsar, who Iād say was very Car Bomb with fewer effects and even fewer vocals, arenāt easily found. Iād kill to hear āGodzilla vs. Space Godzillaā again!!

Check out Tenebre! Album is In Everything Give Thanks. SF Bay Area. Only album, maybe 2003 or 2004?
Pretty, melodic, finger tappy, and their bass player uses a standup bass, so thatās a unique quality that I think adds something.

They probably would protest being called a math rock band but Many Arms from Philly/NY were very good.

I donāt know if this counts but HTX guy here and you NEED to check out this band called Second Place. Most amazing emo singer Iāve heard with an awesome range and vibrato. Very algernon cadwalader vibes. Also if you want to check out my band My Callisto.

Honestly despite feeling like I listen to loads of it I rarely know any of the bands people here seem to class as the 'big names' š
But I'd hazard a guess that Cleft and You Slut! Aren't too well known out of South West England.
