Light and Fluffy News Taylah Sweeeft

Hopefully this doesn't get deleted because I sure as hell can't post anywhere else about her unless it's mindnumbing blind agreement with everyone else.

Anyway I just saw live coverage of her NFL boyfriend landing in Sydney. Professional journalists who have interviewed our country's leaders are watching his plane land. Sitting around talking about it. This is live news.

This goes WAY beyond enjoying her music. I don't know what this is anymore. It felt like as a society we were moving away from celebrity worship. This has lost touch of reality. What's weird is everyone going along with it? I feel like I'm in a movie where everyone gets infected and I'm going to be the last person alive. Movie ends with me dancing mindlessly to Shake it Off, my eyeballs completely white. Roll credits.

Maybe a Swifty can explain this phenomenon to me because this level of worship would be ridiculed for just about any other celebrity. I didn't even know Pink and Blink 182 were here too, they've gotten so little media coverage.

EDIT: Thanks mods for not deleting this. Third different sub I tried. Happy that the Melbourne sub allows some discussion! Saving me from any Donald Sutherland in Body Snatchers assumptions.

It says a lot about those people going to a concert based on FOMO, not really about her.

I've just done a quick google search on her chart hits and you're wrong:

  • 11 No. 1s
  • 49 top 10s
  • 17 years releasing music with 232 career charted titles – the most among women
  • The w/c Nov. 5, 2022 she held the entire top 10, which no artist has ever done.

That's a phenomenal record.

Speaking as an indy musician, mainstream success has always been about looks, stagecraft, accessibility, and entertainment. Swift is nothing new. She works very hard, as does Ed Sheeran, both of whom play safe, non-threatening, boring music. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean others shouldn't.

Pop music is manufactured - it always has been. The swift machine is no different to the Sheeran machine or the Gaga machine or the Beyonce machine or the Jackosn machine or The Monkees machine. As for the media "shoving her in our faces", how is this difreent to all the other shit that the free media shove in our faces. MAFS dramas, all kinds of boring tiktok shit. The best journos were all sacked in the last ten years, to be replaced by lower paid younger people. Maybe you are too young to understand cultural history but swift mania is nothing at all new. as countles other commenters have said. I havent counted all their upvotes because I don't attach my value to internet points

and as for your favourite phrase, parasocial relationships, care to comment on Australian's (in particlar Victorians) parasocial relationship with AFL? People become obsessed with and some destroy their lives over sportsmen they have never and will never meet.
