Winds only around 30kmh in Derrimut today which wouldn't be the sole cause. May have been a strong contributing factor though. Haven't seen a crane fail like this before - its bent over itself backwards so the mast must have been near vertical.
In high winds mast should be horizontal. But usually these have a wind speed limit of like 50kmh+
The 'under control' update on VicEmergency was sent at 11:18am, so I'd assume that this happened somewhere in the range of 10:30-11:00am. Laverton recorded the cool change passing through at about 10:45am with the winds swinging around from the NW to the W and peak gusts up to 60-70km/h, so it could very well be solely wind related
Yeah the BoM observations from Laverton reported a 3º temperature drop between 10:30 and 11:00 as the cool change went through with a slight wind direction change from WNW to W and up to 59km/h gusts.
They also report the maximum wind gust reported at each weather station on the Melbourne Area observations page, with the maximum gust at Laverton today being 69km/h recorded at 10:41am.
