Customs cut the head off this expensive hand-carved elephant artwork shipped from Africa, and did a terrible job gluing it back on.

If customs did it intentionally, they’d just crate it back up and send it on. They’re not gluing it.

That also doesn’t look like a cut. A saw blade would have removed the width of itself, meaning more material is lost in the form of saw dust.

The carvings still line up. That’s a crack. Looks like Seller glued it and OP is assuming customs because the crack wasn’t displayed in the seller’s photo.

Also if take wood that flourishes in a specific climate and slam it through several different climates rapidly it can split.

Or just on an airplane in general.

If that thing was shipped in the foreword belly or upper deck on a cargo plane: those aren’t pressurized.

It would have gone from like 70-80F (or higher depending on location) to something like -30 to -50F while cruising, then back to 60-70F all in a matter of a few hours.

As someone who works in shipping, I can tell you that it 100% was shipped without pressure. In all the Boeings and Airbusses that I work on, the only area that is pressurized is the cabin.

Fun fact: every cargo plane belly and upper deck has a button you can press to let the pilots know a person is stuck in the cargo.

I like your fun fact, I hope never to need it

That fact is not fun, that fact will save someone's life.

Saving a life is fun you psyko

As a loadmaster at FedEx, I can assure you that specific compartments are pressurized.

We carry significant amounts of live freight and pressure-sensitive cargo.

It is also literally my job to inspect pressure locks and seals as well as to be the first person on and last person off.

Honestly, most of what you are saying (at least about our and UPS aircraft) is just not true.

u/KnowledgeSafe3160 2h ago

lol well you’re just totally wrong. The cargo hold is pressurized evenly with the cabin. On all airbus and Boeing planes. Damn how can you be so confidently incorrect?

3

u/me_at_myhouse 7h ago

Pressurized is not the same as 'climate controlled'.

The cargo areas are pressurized.

and if it was expensive now I can't imagine how much the seller was charging for it while it wasn't broken

4

u/davidicon168 21h ago

Yup. Had this happen to me when I shipped a computer case back. 4 legs or rubber feet at the bottom. One was cut in half by US customs during my flight back. These were large rubber feet, custom built into the case. So not the standard stubs.

Can confirm. Got brass musical spheres in Asia and the customs guys in the Netherlands sawed a few open and dropped them along wirh the undamaged ones in the box. We had to pay for delivery from them , too.

Ngl I think the seller might have seen a good opportunity to offload their damaged stock and blame customs for it.

How did you learn that customs cut the head? I have worked in customs compliance for almost 20 Years now and this makes no sense to me.

151

u/sleepysof_ 1d ago

the "cut" is very irregular and just happens to follow the grain of the wood

54

u/DavePeesThePool 1d ago

I would suggest that it was broken in transit (the shape would be very vulnerable to getting broken off after all). But were that the case, they would have found the carving in 2 pieces.

It was either broken and poorly repaired before it shipped, or someone opened the packaging during the shipping process and broke or cut it and glued it back together. I'm not sure who else would do such a thing other than customs looking for smuggled paraphernalia.

16

u/Own_Round_7600 20h ago

Customs may open items if they have a reasonable suspicion from x-rays or swipe tests, but they're certainly not paid or equipped to glue it back together. They only tape the shipping packaging back up.

An apologetic customs officer inexpertly attempting to restore the item itself with glue from his drawer is cute to imagine, but they're not allowed to tamper with it any more than strictly necessary to do their job. This absolutely wasnt customs, it was the seller.

u/sensors 1d ago

I call bullshit, sounds like a made up story. That 'cut' is definitely just a break along the grain of the wood.

52

u/toomany_geese 23h ago

That ain't customs, someone dropped it and hastily glued it back on. Customs would just throw the pieces back in the box and call it a day.

u/ParkingAnxious2811 1d ago

If only customs had access to machines that could scan through wood...

101

u/Lopsided-Rough-1562 1d ago

If Doctor Who can't do wood, how would customs?

-181

u/ParkingAnxious2811 1d ago

Doctor Who isn't real. X-ray machines and other scanners exist.

u/URnotSTONER 1d ago

For you, I'm going to dust off an old banger: I bet you're fun at parties.

u/Minced_Marshal_2904 23h ago

They’re just making a point. Looks like someone’s had a bad day.

u/SellMeYourSirin 22h ago

God that guy fuckin sucks.

1

u/I_Go_BrRrRrRrRr 17h ago

I hate this fucking guy holy shit

3

u/StrangeSmellz 17h ago

They so cut into stuff all the time.

33

u/spencer1886 23h ago

This wasn't cut, and it definitely wasn't glued together by customs. I bet it was broken either way before you even bought it and the condition was never disclosed, or the seller broke it as they were boxing it up and hastily glued it together in an effort to get it out the door and get paid

10

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O 23h ago

You think OP actually owns this? He just came up with a BS story to get engagement.

83

u/_1457_ 23h ago

No way customs is taking any time to glue something back together.

19

u/ScrappyCoCo0 1d ago

That's not cut.

8

u/Daratirek 23h ago

Thats not cut. It broke and the seller glued it and didn't tell you.

7

u/TeratoidNecromancy 23h ago

BS. That's not a cut, that's a break. And customs wouldn't glue it back on. 100% the seller.

6

u/mmmmmarty 22h ago

That's not a cut, that's a crack and customs did not fix it.

14

u/shrimpsisbugs23 1d ago

That looks like the wood cracked due to pressure changes or moisture in the wood.

5

u/nickytheginger 23h ago

They have freaking xray machines, why would they need to cut it open.

4

u/No-Market9917 23h ago

Customs is not gluing that back together. Sounds like the seller might’ve ripped you off. Seeing as how they’re in Africa, you’re probably shit out of luck but you could maybe find a local woodworker that could fix it up a little better.

4

u/UnhappyImprovement53 23h ago

Bs. Customs aren't going to take the time to glue it back together.

4

u/Mikki-chan 22h ago

I call bs, I worked in customs and we have so many detection methods available to us without having to do something like that.

Any delay by customs would have been because of the risk of ivory, I've had to check that myself, which would.only involve checking the tusks.

6

u/Dragon3043 23h ago

This wasn't cut... and even if it was, customs wouldn't have glued it back together.

4

u/UndoRedo_ 22h ago

This sounds completely made up 💀

17

u/Chicken-coop-03 1d ago

There could be narcotics!! We don’t care how expensive it was!

0

u/catjuggler 23h ago

It’s an elephant- seems like it was suspected ivory

6

u/McDergen 23h ago

Lol OP actually thinks customs makes repairs to shit they break

3

u/JCBashBash 22h ago

Dude if this was customs it would have come in a completely torn apart box and you'd be missing pieces cuz they would have just hacked it. The seller did this

2

u/protomenace 22h ago

still looks fine

2

u/MaxTheCookie 22h ago

That looks more like a crack since no material is missing. If it was cut with a saw there would be material missing the width of the saw blade.

7

u/hankhillsucks 1d ago

The cruelty is the feature

7

u/JetstreamGW 23h ago

If customs broke it, they ain’t gonna glue it. And they don’t need to cut it, they’d just x-ray it.

This was done by whoever sent the product.

2

u/Fishboy_1998 22h ago

Op I’ve seen enough of the border show to know this is exactly what they send over Khat in. Large wooden statues from Africa. You could have been a middle man (technically a outsider) for a drug smuggling that you blamed then blamed on customs

1

u/hshajahwhw 1d ago

Reminds me of when the “pep-peesh-ka” broke off the statue in Heartbreakers

1

u/takoyaki-md 20h ago

you sure it wasn't just a change in humidity?

1

u/AggravatingPermit910 20h ago

Dang that’s crazy you bought a broken statue

1

u/Equal_Flamingo 19h ago

OP, that is very obviously just a crack. It doesn't even look remotely like it was cut lol

1

u/Sillybumblebee33 12h ago

customs leaves a slip informing you they've done things iirc.

either way sad to see a damaged piece like this.

1

u/Popular-Drummer-7989 10h ago

If only there was gel crazy glue, a magnifying glass and a clamp...

1

u/BllisBrooke 9h ago

truly amazing doing this handcrafts

1

u/Luzifer_Shadres 8h ago

You got scammed. The seller glued together a broken piece and sent it to you.

That "cut" is way to iregular and like almost no material is losty wich is an indicator of something being broken off.

Also, Customs does not glue things back together when they cut something open, in the case of suspected drugs (Wich only happens when suspect xrays or drug dogs point it out.).

1

u/Jesusdidntlikethat 6h ago

That’s from the seller honey

1

u/TwoRelative4870 23h ago

Just pretend its a Glasgow elephant that got glassed in a pub fight.

1

u/Altruistic-Poem-5617 23h ago

That fell off due to a crack in the wood when it dryed (wood always "works" dud to changes in humidity and can crack at the growth lines at times). Bet it fell off at the seller and they glued it.

1

u/marsox78 23h ago

That thing is cool as hell

1

u/Iittletart 17h ago

This is intentional and is a good thing. Ivory poaching is decimating elephant populations. Destroying the market for ivory is necessary to protect the species.

1

u/Its_Sasha 10h ago

What are you on about? This is a wood sculpture.

0

u/Pro4791 1d ago

If only x-rays existed.

-51

u/COIFFEDSNARFLE 1d ago

Dude that thing is hideous anyway 😂

17

u/thetoastmonster 1d ago

Yeah -- thankfully it was my mum that bought it and she didn't even notice the damage. I agree it's hideous.

-44

u/COIFFEDSNARFLE 1d ago

😂😂😂🤌🏻👍🏻

If HR Giger did elephant trinkets

0

u/honey_glamrock 22h ago

I once ordered a few storage containers to put all of my cosmetics in, from Temu as it was cheap and I didn’t really need much, but customs tore the boxes apart and pretty much squashed them together and packing taped them closed. I understand they need to check but I was astounded by how little care they put into it, quite literally ripping the boxes and then having them arrive damaged and flattened because the boxes weren’t put back together properly.

u/Neither_Teaching_438 1d ago

They actually did you a favor - too bad they glued it back on!
