Snapchat now puts a watermark on saved photos
Have a great photo of my wife, the dog, and me. Then noticed the Snapchat logo as a watermark >:(

u/tanjawheeler 5d ago
Ah yes, nothing like your photo getting a surprise autograph from Snapchat.

u/AppleNatives 4d ago
They're just letting you know they own the rights to the photo now.
74
u/freakshowmassacre 4d ago
Do they actually? Like genuine question, but that shit sounds scary
146
u/Theory_of_Time 4d ago
Pretty much all social media has the same TOC when you sign up.
You own your images, but the platforms get broad, free, global rights to use them however they please. For some like Facebook, that includes any photo you have already deleted.

I noticed this for the first time two days ago when I tried saving a photo. It’s such bullshit. I used the clean up tool on the iphone camera app and got rid of it no problem but like come on Snapchat… that’s just being unnecessarily cunty

Wonder if this is iphone only. At least for now. Same thing happened for some for screenshots on Twitter but was apparently iphone only.
Just tested my Samsung s22 ultra (android 15) and it didn't have a watermark. Twitter still doesn't do it either and it's been months lol.
Was the image saved to camera roll or screenshotted?

it’s when you save it to your camera roll, i also have an iphone and use the cleanup tool to counteract the watermark

u/AcademicStandard4964 1d ago
Where is this clean up tool on the iPhone camera app? Can’t seem to find it.

Remove it, most phones have the feature and there arent many details in that area
Truly mildly infuriating though

I just took a screenshot instead of saving through Snapchat, which gets rid of it

You took the words out of my mouth, all they did is teach people how to do a screenshot.

u/Quizzelbuck 4d ago
Eventually they'll secure the app so it can't work on unlocked bootloader phones and can't do screenshots. Like banking apps
→ More replies (11)6
u/Furdiburd10 4d ago
You can bypass that by enabled screenshots on restricted apps in the android dev settings - unless they start using a DRM like netflix to block screenshots

Can’t you ask the person who took the photo to send you the original photo? Or was the photo taken with Snapchat for some horrible reason?
28
u/bananslickarn 5d ago
Some people take photos with Snapchat because their phone is already full so they can save them
5
u/LeebleLeeble 4d ago
I only still have snap cause for some reason, that app is the only one who wants to use the full potential of my phones camera. Even just using the normal camera app makes any pics i take look like theres a filter of sand on top.
12
u/Jacktheforkie 5d ago
iPhones have a major flaw where if the storage is full you can’t delete photos

Save the pic to ur memories. Go to your memories and click the share button, then save image. When saved this way it doesn’t have the watermark

Well Snapchat was betting you wouldn't think of that...

u/Krybte 5d ago
Sorry could you say it Like im 5? im tired stupid and Not a native english speaker

u/WillingStan007 5d ago
the app devs at snapchat are assuming if you use snapchat enough, you'll just pay to remove the watermark rather than use your regular phone app
23
u/Thebenmix11 5d ago
And some people will, which is why they do it. Sometimes I think I'd make more money as a scammer.

Maybe I'm not attributing your comment to the right poster, but are you saying you just yell at 5-year-olds?
10
u/jdog7249 4d ago
It amazes me the people that use Snapchat as their camera app on their phone. After taking a photo you have to press an extra button to save it.
Or you could use the normal camera app and it saves every photo immediately (bonus points I am pretty sure you can still send it through Snapchat if that's your goal).

u/_sabsub_ 4d ago
I learned that in this thread... Just makes me realise how different of a bubble we live in. I had never heard of that before or even had the slightest idea that someone would use that instead of you know your phone's camera.
2
u/fusion_reactor3 4d ago
I mean, some people use third party camera apps that offer more features, but I can’t say I’ve ever heard of someone using Snapchat over the default app
4
u/z6oul 4d ago
the app honestly has a lot of good filters (that actually don’t change your entire facial anatomy!) if you dig, so i usually take selfies on snapchat instead of my phone
→ More replies (1)12
u/knavishkittyy 4d ago
I use it instead of my camera app cause for some reason tbe default app on my phone is incredibly laggy, so if I'm on a call or listening to something in the background—which I almost always am—everything crashes. Snapchat doesn't so it's preferable for me.
6
u/passrevoked 4d ago
Sometimes pictures come out better with Snapchat instead of my camera app
3
u/Character-Truth-7577 4d ago
My camera has filters that I have to turn off every time I use it. Snapchat, I have to turn the filters on. I want to remember my life as authentically as possible, not with filters!

u/Yagirl27 21h ago
I use Snapchat because you can save pictures and back them up without needing more storage docs. My icloud hasn’t been backed up in over a year but Snapchat always backs up lol!

u/Ekalips 5d ago
Never understood why people don't just use their phone's camera app to take photos...
82
u/No-Poem-9846 5d ago
For photos I don't intend on sharing with people right away I use my phone camera. But my family and some friends use iPhones and, despite the fact I have literally seen them say they fixed the quality issue between iPhones and android, every media I send or receive via texts from them has like 4 pixels. Snap is faster to share with multiple people and when they open it there, there's no degrading of quality. That's just me personally. Haven't had this issue of a watermark yet, but won't bother me much since it's 90% cats lmao.
26
u/D3ADFAC3 5d ago
The quality issue you speak of happens when the phone has to fall back on SMS to send pictures.
In order to fix it both parties need to have RCS messaging enabled. This requires the iPhone to have iOS 18 or later. It’s also possible the carrier doesn’t support it (unlikely if in the US tho)
4
u/No-Poem-9846 5d ago
Oh that makes sense because they all have really old phones. My friend told me to make sure the RCS was enabled and I can't even disable it on my phone 🤣
8
u/MonkeysInABarrel 4d ago
Wait why not just use a messaging system that’s not SMS ass? WhatsApp, messenger, ig, signal, etc. all support high quality image transfer
10
u/D3ADFAC3 4d ago
Because I shouldn’t have to have an account with a company that sells my data to send things to friends. RCS is well supported by all major networks and can send full quality images and video.

u/Ekalips 5d ago
Probably I don't have enough friends or/and don't share nearly enough photos for it to be an issue.
Also on (many) Androids you can open the camera app by double pressing the power button which makes it way faster than opening any other app, so for me personally I would rather get to the (full) camera 10 times faster than spend one less click on sharing. Also the camera app has more features than any in-app camera thingy, features that I use. So yeah, that's me.

I never get why people use Snapchat camera over their phone's camera,
And with this now it will baffle me more
14
u/spinosauruspecs 5d ago
Some people prefer the softer camera even without filters. Also many phone cameras will “flip” the photo after taking it while Snapchat does not.
4
u/jevans1111 4d ago
The camera being flipped is a setting, on my samsung its save selfies as previewed
Or something along those lines
2
u/Few_Library3961 4d ago
i use snap for pictures on top of my phones camera just cuz i take a lot of pictures and using my phone camera clogs up my storage faster than snap

Snapchat lost my business after it started essentially showing softcore porn after you finish viewing your friend's snaps
5
u/co2gamer 4d ago
Before you started view your friends snaps, snapchats business was showing softcore porn. (Underaged softcore porn mostly)
4
u/kennybrandz 5d ago
There’s an app you can download called retouch that will let you edit that small part out if it bothers you! I believe it’s free as well, was the last time I used it.
5
u/JojoDasJojo 5d ago
you can try to download ALL things that they have in your account. in the eu it is mandatory that you are able to do that. maiby there are no watermarks on these then.
4
u/Funny_Energy5240 4d ago
They have said they only do this on AI -generated images. Did you use AI to alter the looks in some way before saving?
→ More replies (1)
6
u/pereuse 5d ago
This only happens when you save AI photos to your camera roll. It doesn't have a watermark for non-AI edited photos that you download from Snapchat. It's a good idea because it's getting harder to spot AI edits in photos.

Unfortunately the Reddit app does the same thing (a lot worse actually..), trying to save an image. It makes sharing wallpapers and such useless if you only use native app…

I just take a screen recording of the image and then screenshot the recording in my camera roll.

u/NeckRoFeltYa 3d ago
Got rid of Snap a while ago. If anyone does, make sure to login online and download your data then delete your account. That way none of your pictures are saved. I was very surprised by the number of pictures it saved. Had 3 GB worth.
Never want someone to go back and hack your online account and grab the pictures in 5 years.

If you have any modern phone just make a copy and zoom in very closely to it and use the ai remove feature to get rid of the watermark, most Samsungs do a good job, if you have any experience with Photoshop try that, a quick tutorial will help you out or ask one of the Photoshop subreddits to help you out, most do it for free

If you use snapchat for items you don't want saved by whoever is on the other side then just don't send it. Screen mirroring and other methods can be used to capture the images without you even knowing, they could even be broadcasting it and you wouldn't even know! As for images that you do want to keep I wouldn't be using snap to do this either, if you have an iphone/android generally you can setup shared photo albums that can even sync to your widgets if you wanted them displayed on your chromecast etc...

u/dangerdude132 4d ago
Haven’t updated Snapchat in forever. Cant give me a watermark if they don’t force me to.
Last time they forced me was to shove the AI chat bot down our throat

I can always tell if I took a picture on Snapchat because their camera software is absolutely horrible! I have a Pixel 9XL that takes beautiful photos, but if I take it on Snapchat it looks like I'm taking a picture with a $50 phone from Walmart.

I deleted Snapchat when I started getting notifications like "I crave you" and "last night changed my heart" from spammy accounts I had no interaction with and no mutuals with. It was relentless, multiple times a day. My good-natured, trusting partner and I had a good laugh over it, but that shit is going to get someone killed.
