I have a key that can unlock most of these then set the toggle to dispense a proper amount.

u/tonymyre311 4d ago
I also changed the ones at work to dispense a new one immediately after use so there's always some hanging out. Less sanitary? Maybe, but I enjoyed the convenience

This is another one of these perfect posts for this subreddit. 95% are not worth worrying about or extremely infuriates me. This is the perfect thing to mildly infuriated about.

Hey, 4 inches is pretty good, and you don't even know what his personality is like so you can't really judge yet

All jokes aside, one of two things, and both can be true as well:
Next time will be longer, that was just a random short one. I see it happen all the time across many brands of these.
If you open those, they are usually battery powered, and by the battery tray inside will be a switch that lets them pick two or three different lengths, and this one is set to the shortest.

Nah, that can't be 4 inches. 4 inches is way bigger than that. That's like an inch.

I mean.. It's pretty average, actually... some might say it's too much paper even...

I carry a paper towel dispenser key on me for exactly this reason. Pop it open, flip the switch to a longer length and close it back up.

Battery is running low, give it a gentle tug and more will come out.

Inside it has these little plastic teeth used to tear the paper. If you jiggle the teeth with your finger, it will reset the dispenser, so you can get a normal length sheet. Also if its not working at all, there's a chance this trick will fix it. If you had the key to open it, there are controls that set the length you want.

It's so frustrating. My work has one that dispenses this much. I'm going to try your trick, thanks.

u/FireSystem1765 4d ago
You don’t even need to jiggle the teeth. All you have to do is tug the towel slightly.

"that's what she said"
To be fair that's what a lot of men have said as well.

If you gently pull it while the motor is in activation, you can "speed up" the roller and get more than you're meant to.

u/RebekkaKat1990 4d ago
Here, let me fix that for you.
changes paper towel dispenser to aggressively spit out the entire roll of paper towels and won’t stop even when people are screaming in terror as it continues dispensing paper towels until the heat death of the universe

Pro tip: whenever a dispenser spits out a small amount, pull the paper slightly such that the razor edges bump but don’t tear the paper. Wave your hand again and see some more paper come out; repeat as needed.

My girlfriend is jealous of this statement. 4 inches for her would be a dream.

There's a sensor inside of the paper towel dispenser. The teeth that cuts the paper towel for you. Yeah, just reach your hand up in there, push on it and then wave your hand over the dispenser again. Alternatively, you can just simply grab the paper towel and gently pull down while it is dispensing and you can get some more from that.

You can usually modify the amount of towel extruded, you need to open the device and use the buttons hidden inside the housing.

There is a setting inside that changes how long it comes out. I used to work at a gym and I would change the setting almost every day to the medium setting and my boss would come in and change it to this!! It made me so annoyed because you aren’t saving paper towel cause people will just use more!!

u/bassocontinubow 4d ago
When this happens to me, the infuriation isn’t even mild at this point. It’s enraging haha

u/69edgy420 4d ago
Pull up on the paper slightly without ripping it and then do the motion sensor again?

Sir, I’ll have you know that 4 inches is actually a lot. Some would even say it’s too much…

u/weedlemethis 4d ago
You’re supposed to leave your hand on the sensor not just wave your hand by it if that happens.

I've worked as a janitor with these exact paper towel dispensers. There's a switch with a few different settings on the inside that determines how much paper it puts out. Someone's just being cheap as fuck.

Most of these EnMotion dispensers have a secret hack. Pull ever so slightly (but not hard enough to rip the towel) as it’s feeding and you can get as much towel as you want

Hold both sides of paper towel evenly with a little force. Trigger the sensor. Pull as it feeds. I use abt 15 ft

4 inches is a lot, right? Right, guys? I mean, if 4 is a lot, then surely 3 is quite a bit, too... Right?

Open top with something pointy. You can usually pull on the case and wiggle a paperclip back and forth. Or 3D print a key, or cut a key from an old hotel card. You are looking for a group of switches on the side. Change the length, interval between dispensing and whether the towel is out by default or waits for motion. I prefer a long towel, medium time and out by default.

At my work we do our own janitorial. The shop guys can never be bothered to replace their rolls AND they lost their key, so whenever I replace the roll I set it to 4" feed and the highest time interval.
