I didn't realise this was even in vanilla Minecraft. Is that actually a meteor that can spawn or is something else going on, and it just looks like a meteor, but it isn't one?

It's an amethyst geode, the outermost layer is smooth basalt. The next layer is calcite, I think you can see a few blocks on the lower right side
