Is it common/legal for renters in Montreal to ask for $100 application fee before even viewing the apartment? I found a few apartments on Facebook groups that I was interested in but every time I was asked for $100 application fee which I’m not sure is entirely legal.

No, its not, deposits or pre-payments are also not legal. You pay your rent on the 1st of the month.

That $100 application is possibly a scam

Oh I didn’t know that even deposits weren’t allowed? In Alberta it’s common practice to pay a security deposit as part of the application process. Thanks for the information and yes upon further reflection I’m sure this is a scam I’m dealing with.

You pay the first month of rent when you sign the lease, that's the only "deposit" we have here.

I wonder how much the landlord can jack up the rent after you're done
