Discussion RaccoonQuest Montréal *Update*
Bonjour!
A few weeks ago I posted on this sub asking for recommendations as to where I could find Raccoons in the city during a short vacation.
I am thrilled to report that with your help it was a success! I followed the suggestions to check out Mount Royal lookout at sunset and upon arrival I was greeted by at least 5 plump trash pandas. I did not feed or attempt to pet don’t worry!
I just wanted to express my thanks for making this possible it was in the top three highlights of the trip for me. Montreal is such a beautiful city you are all so lucky!
attached a couple photos

Cute pictures, thanks for sharing.
I do not go looking for them, they find me ! Last week, I found a young racoon stuck in my brown bin. He had eated all my table scraps (yuk!). I tilted the bin and he got out fast !
I did not approach him, they are sometimes rabid.

Pregnant raccoon can get so huuuuggee!
Saw one time at the imperial tobacco parking lot and it was looking like a huge turtle, its been like 20 years and that scene is still crystal clear lol

I saw one far away in the dark and she was so big she could pass for a small bear

Pleas don’t go near them. Recently they’ve been found to have rage. But they are the cutesttttt

If ever looking again, my best luck in Montreal was around the garbage cans in the La Ronde parking lot. Met a whole family also.

I don’t understand how anyone finds these things to be cute. They’re dangerous disease-ridden pests that eat trash.

"Raccoon rabies on the rise in Quebec"
- CTV News

Ya certainly deserving of caution with any wild animal, but also there are only like 2 known confirmed cases of raccoon to human transmission of rabies. Bats remain the most dangerous animal for rabies transmission to humans in Quebec, and for all of North America.
Raccoon rabies is not endemic in Quebec since the government tries to vaccine and control for it, but it is endemic in the US. Since 2024 there have been some raccoon rabies in Southern Quebec but it hasn't spread too far yet and hopefully a targetted vaccination project will manage to push it out of the province again.

Cute post, I have never heard of anybody seeking them out before. Seems like most people don't want to interact with these guys.
