Test ride with my load out before first motocamping experience.

Post image

I have a 2 week long trip planned for next year and I've been chipping away at buying gear to camp along my way out West. Tomyom going on a quick little test camp to see how I get along. Can't wait!

Always test before riding longer distances. Don't want stuff falling off!

I've done thousands of miles with the Saddlebag on the bag cargo rack but I always go for a test the night before I leave! Rok Straps have yet to let me down.

Been using regular straps. Ive heard rok straps are the best. Do you think its worth picking up?

GET ROK STRAPS. You'll never go back to regular after you use 'em on a trip!

GoldWing knows no bounds!

Nice one! I did the same before my first big camping road trip, make sure you make notes on your phone about what you do and don’t use and things you wished you had, I changed loads of my gear thanks to my test run :)

I wish I could roll my Toucan as small as your looks! Tell me your secret!

u/glizzyglide 11d ago

Kneel down and use your knee and put all your weight on it. Always roll from the pole storage side. I tie it together so the ground mat has about 3 inches of space between. It takes some wrestling and practice but you'll get it!

Thanks! I'll give it a go!

C’mon man. I know it’s two weeks but that’s overkill.

You can’t seriously have us believe you are carrying all that, and an Indian Scout as a sidecar. Leave one at home. Sheesh.

A 1000cc sidecar is a must have! Can't see the country without one!

Please report back on the toucan tent!! I’ve been eye balling the goose for like 2 years and just can’t pull the trigger since I have two other dome style tents that get the job done, and I also often use my backpacking hammock set up to go really light if I’m doing more dualsport type riding. But I also have a cruiser and the goose tent just seems like such a vibe and high quality.

Safe travels!

I have the Toucan and have really enjoyed using it. Very well built and comfy. I don't mind the weight as my bike has enough power, but it's mostly if you've got the right space to mount it on. If you're like...6'2" or more I'd recommend the Toucan over the Goose

I’m 6’ even, so I was also wondering if the toucan would be the better buy. That and my wife could come with me potentially but then just extra space when she isn’t tagging along.

I just love waxed canvas, I would love to have a nice, sturdy, and durable tent like that. My KLR wouldn’t mind the weight (can just strap it behind me on my seat), my Sportster I might have more of a space restraint than anything but I think it can fit on my luggage rack.

Go for the Toucan for sure. It’s nice to have the space just for gear and stuff.Ā

Have you used it standalone? Like away from the bike? Some places I camp don’t really have a great way to sleep right by the bike, so do you just tie off the canopy to something else?

How’s the mattress? I’ve heard good things, so I’m curious if it’s as comfy as they say. Do you use a different sleeping bag, and if so, are you able to still roll it up with the tent?

Good to know! I figured from the reviews I’ve seen that the tent was also freestanding, but seem to just see people using it next to their bike (which is a vibe, I get it lol).

I’m curious how you like the Toucan. It’s so dang big! I buy all ā€œbackpackingā€ gear myself to keep the bulk and weight down(I’m carrying enough myself as it is).

I have a North Face Stormbreaker 2 man tent. I feel like my tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bag take up less space than the Toucan at least but I know it’s a complete ā€œsystemā€ itself

Since I'm on a GoldWing the size and weight isn't an issue. I can barely tell there is more weight compared to just my loaded up tour pack.

Awesome! Great idea to test ride.

Put as much of the density as low as possible, fluffy high.

1

u/twowheelsin 9d ago

Enjoy mate. When I started, I'd pack a little paint pen and each time I used something, I'd put a dot on it. Anything without a dot didn't make the next trip. Then the next trip, I'd make a second different coloured dot. And the third, til I was down to the essentials.

It made finding what I really need super simple.

1

u/glizzyglide 9d ago

I used everything I brought! A couple things aren't necessities like my One Tigris table. Definitely going to get a dry bag and move all camping gear into it and keep the Saddlemen tail bag just for clothes/personal items.

All in all, had an excellent time.

1

u/whatsamawhatsit 11d ago

What are you bringing? I usually only need like 60L and ~15kg of kit, food included

2

u/glizzyglide 11d ago

Toucan, camp stove, Mountain House meals, 2 days of clothes, wool blanket, chair, table, and my usual saddlebag load out of tools, first aid, air pump, rain gear.

2

u/muddywadder 11d ago

the goldwing is a big bike, if you can fit it why not bring it. sweet bike man have fun out there

u/Dirt_Bike_Zero 11d ago

That sleeping bag setup is an issue. First, it's important to keep certain things dry, sleeping bag is at the top of that list. Second, a down sleeping bag will pack smaller and be warmer than a poly fill bag.

2

u/glizzyglide 11d ago

That's my tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat all rolled into one. Check it out.
