As I was watching the movie I was thinking "Man, they are making these people cartoonishly evil." Then I thought about that for a few seconds and decided "Nah, there are people now who would do worse."

87

u/Phormicidae May 02 '25

Agreed. Sure there are narrative issues with both Avatar movies. But I've read the complaint about the humans being cartoonishly evil and lacking any moral grey nuance. My reposnse is: compared to what? Other stories? Or actual humans? Because the corporation in Avatar is quite realistic when compared to actual reality.

50

u/AsstacularSpiderman May 02 '25

Yeah wait until they find out the whaling in Avatar is pretty much how we treated actual whales lol.

You do realize people have done the same literally in our own world 200 years ago and even now. Bison went almost extinct and a type of pigeon did. We still have people whaling and back in the day they whales for oil. Drilling on native lands happens and technically not allowed on treaty terms. Humanity is already comically villains

I can picture it: You’ve got these graceful and slender blue aliens, with a beautiful culture steeped in this global living network, and then the camera just pans over to a trailer park full of fat southern tribesfolk drinking canned beer ranting about the “goddayum tree-huggin’ libruhls” allowing “them illegal Sky-immigrants” to invade their land.

🎶The Avatar's font's is Papyrus in bold! The Avatar's font is papyrus in bold!

129

u/darthjoey91 May 02 '25

That did get them to switch fonts. They made a new one for the sequel's marketing called Toruk, named after the big orange dragon in the movie.

78

u/HomsarWasRight May 02 '25

Oh, so instead of just stealing a font and tweaking it ever so slightly, they made a new font, but stole the name from a famous dinosaur hunter, but tweaked it ever so slightly.

Typical.

First movie is Earth, second movie is Water, third movie is Fire.

Next movie's got to be Air. And the 5th movie will be Love.

6th movie will be Ice. 7th will be Slime. 8th will be Candy.

9th will be Electric. 10th could be Grass. 11th is Fighting. 12 is Poison. 13th is Ghost. 14th is Psychic. 15th is Bug. 16th is Fairy. 17th is Legendary.

128

u/AuryxTheDutchman May 03 '25

I feel like the first one was Air, no? There was a lot of focus on the flying

87

u/trebory6 May 03 '25

The first one was about trees, the land, the ore unobtanium or whatever.

I'd consider an Air movie being a colony living on a floating rock in the clouds with like air whales.

Earth would be the clans of the plains, the Direhorse riders. Or maybe a subterranean clan we have yet to learn about.

Avatar 2 completely shit all over almost every other big budget CGI action movie made in the last 20 years. They showed what was possible if you actually care enough to hire the best filmmakers, CGI artists, editors, etc and actually give them the time to build what they want to build. The MCU and Netflix could really learn a lesson from Avatar 2, and I'm really excited for the rest of them

82

u/JessieJ577 May 02 '25

Cameron was talking so much shit about the industry that he seemed like a narcissistic asshole. The movie didn’t disprove that but it backed up every single comment he made. It was an unreal theatrical experience.

61

u/SupervillainMustache May 02 '25

James Cameron made the 3 of the 4 highest grossing movies of all time, as well as starting the Terminator and Alien franchises.

I think dude has sort of earned the right to be arrogant.

43

u/Tamburello_Rouge May 02 '25

Not sure Cameron started the Alien franchise. He only did one Alien movie and it wasn’t the first one. Ridley Scott directed the first Alien movie.

There's that small behind the scenes video of the submarine they built for the sole purpose of a 2 second shot of it getting flooded with water. Stuff like that just translates so well to every single scene in a movie like this. It's so obvious that it was made by real artists with real time to get their work done. Compare that to the rushed work in some other big budget films with cut corners, and it's night and day

u/dragonmp93 May 02 '25

When the first movie came out, Fleshlight advertised a “blue alien” variant for a short time, to the point my local radio station talked about it. Sure enough, there it was on their website. It was indeed blue, and decidedly triangular shaped, I guess to really drive home that it was not of this world.

Anyway, I’m genuinely curious how many units they were able to move back then.

I don’t care what anyone says, I love both movies and I can’t wait for the next one

The first one’s story is just fine for me, the technical marvel it is still looks impressive today. I did enjoy Way of Water more than I thought, while there were times when it was like James Cameron going “Look at this technical wonder!” like in some underwater scenes, I found it more interesting, and the climax not being about the fate of an entire tribe again, and down to a personal matter, worked well for me. I just found the water setting better, a more interesting location and the substance the humans were after more believable and better written, something that can extend human lifespans.

The water looked so FUCKING good in that movie. like better than real life. I just wanted to go to some tropical island and jump in the ocean.

That’s how a lot of people think as well and avatar works great with families and it helps that they release it in December. It’s only redditors who hate on avatar and think nobody cares yet both of the movies have made 2+ billion dollars worldwide. Reddit is in its own bubble

Reddit has a massive hate boner for both the movies and kept saying how it was going to fail 🤣

I enjoyed them. They're not my favorite, but they're definitely not terrible or trash compared to some truly trash movies I've seen in the past. I'll definitely go see this in theaters.

I enjoyed seeing the last one in the theater in iMAX 3D with the high frame rate. It was basically like a roller coaster ride for 2 1/2 hours.

It’s fun. And that’s all I really need from these films.

Pretending she won her Oscar for playing Neytiri (or even Gamora in Infinity War). She deserves recognition for being one of the best action stars of her generation, the physicality she brings to these roles is so underrated.

couldve told me this was from either of the other 2 movies and i wouldve nodded and said "ah yes i remember this" lmao.

im excited for the movie but this image really does nothing and shows nothing.

EDIT-- shes gonna be mad, injure or kill someone, and hiss at the enemy. any number and / or combination of these 3 things will occur in this scene.

I hope they give her more to do in this movie. 2 didn't give her enough imo.

I just came here to say that both Avatar movies blew me away in a very visceral sense and I cannot wait to see this in the cinema.
