That did get them to switch fonts. They made a new one for the sequel's marketing called Toruk, named after the big orange dragon in the movie.
78
u/HomsarWasRight May 02 '25
Oh, so instead of just stealing a font and tweaking it ever so slightly, they made a new font, but stole the name from a famous dinosaur hunter, but tweaked it ever so slightly.
Typical.

First movie is Earth, second movie is Water, third movie is Fire.
Next movie's got to be Air. And the 5th movie will be Love.
6th movie will be Ice. 7th will be Slime. 8th will be Candy.
9th will be Electric. 10th could be Grass. 11th is Fighting. 12 is Poison. 13th is Ghost. 14th is Psychic. 15th is Bug. 16th is Fairy. 17th is Legendary.

The first one was about trees, the land, the ore unobtanium or whatever.
I'd consider an Air movie being a colony living on a floating rock in the clouds with like air whales.

First movie is Air actually. A lot of aerial battles, Jake learning to "fly" and then becoming Toruk Makto.
Earth would be the clans of the plains, the Direhorse riders. Or maybe a subterranean clan we have yet to learn about.

Full disclosure: I'm all in on these movies.
Avatar 2 completely shit all over almost every other big budget CGI action movie made in the last 20 years. They showed what was possible if you actually care enough to hire the best filmmakers, CGI artists, editors, etc and actually give them the time to build what they want to build. The MCU and Netflix could really learn a lesson from Avatar 2, and I'm really excited for the rest of them

u/JessieJ577 May 02 '25
Cameron was talking so much shit about the industry that he seemed like a narcissistic asshole. The movie didn’t disprove that but it backed up every single comment he made. It was an unreal theatrical experience.

James Cameron made the 3 of the 4 highest grossing movies of all time, as well as starting the Terminator and Alien franchises.
I think dude has sort of earned the right to be arrogant.
43
u/Tamburello_Rouge May 02 '25
Not sure Cameron started the Alien franchise. He only did one Alien movie and it wasn’t the first one. Ridley Scott directed the first Alien movie.

There's that small behind the scenes video of the submarine they built for the sole purpose of a 2 second shot of it getting flooded with water. Stuff like that just translates so well to every single scene in a movie like this. It's so obvious that it was made by real artists with real time to get their work done. Compare that to the rushed work in some other big budget films with cut corners, and it's night and day

Well, there's a certain subset of redditor who will push the "good cinematography = good writing".
The Avatar movies are still the most beautiful movies that I have seen, but the writing is very much the same level of an episode of Captain Planet.

u/unpaid-critic May 02 '25
I'd like to think that's possibly the point of these small image releases.
We at least know this movie is on schedule and going to be the big release to finish this year/begin a very massive 2026. Closer we get to release, the more images we'll get of the fire nation.

u/psych0ranger May 02 '25
When avatar 2 came out I heard a critic on a podcast say, "I know what their skin would feel like now" and that pretty much sums up the cgi quality

At the end of the first one when you suddenly saw her saving Jake in the hab and holding his little body it totally changes how you look at her and him. The earlier shots of blue people and normal people didn't quite do it for me.

When the first movie came out, Fleshlight advertised a “blue alien” variant for a short time, to the point my local radio station talked about it. Sure enough, there it was on their website. It was indeed blue, and decidedly triangular shaped, I guess to really drive home that it was not of this world.
Anyway, I’m genuinely curious how many units they were able to move back then.

The first one’s story is just fine for me, the technical marvel it is still looks impressive today. I did enjoy Way of Water more than I thought, while there were times when it was like James Cameron going “Look at this technical wonder!” like in some underwater scenes, I found it more interesting, and the climax not being about the fate of an entire tribe again, and down to a personal matter, worked well for me. I just found the water setting better, a more interesting location and the substance the humans were after more believable and better written, something that can extend human lifespans.
