Idk what this movie is about since I didn’t read the book, but the quotes have me interested

This is one that I usually recommend people checking out the audiobook over the print version. Ray Porter is so, so good as the narrator and the passages you see people posting here are better heard than read.

There's a reason that the audiobook is so, so good. But I can't describe it at all without spoilers except that this book definitely benefits from being heard.

u/zvons Jun 27 '25

I’ve read the physical book and I just want to hear how they did the thing in the audio book but haven't found anything online. But I hear constantly that its an amazing experience. Can't wait to see what they do in the movie. Hope it's good.

The audiobook was the best audiobook I’ve ever heard.

I’ll probably listen to it a second time - just because it was so enjoyable.

I had absolutely no idea where the story was gonna go. I only had vague genre idea and it was recommended because it was “by the guy that wrote The Martian”

Anyway… the combination of the writing and the narration was done so well. I haven’t found an experience as enjoyable since.

I thought to myself “hopefully someday they make a movie of this” and it was announced like a week later. I’m worried a movie won’t be able to do it as much justice, curious how they will render some of the non-human elements and other things. I hope it’s as good as the audiobook telling the story. :)

Second? Those are rookie numbers. I just finished my third listen. SOOOOO Good.

1

u/BudgetAcanthisitta43 Jun 27 '25

I've lost count. Somewhere between 9 and 12 listens. It is my favorite comfort book on audible.

2

u/zootered Jun 28 '25

You should check out the Bobiverse. I don’t recall how many books it is but it’s a lot all narrated by the same guy. It’s different but definitely super fun, it’s my favorite audiobook series along with Expeditionary Force narrated by R.C Bray. That one can be a little corny and drag at times but I think it’s a ton of fun.

1

u/thebouster Jun 28 '25

I actually started with EC and got a little bored with it. Bobiverse however? I've listened to the entire series a few times. Catch something new every time, and Ray Porter is amazing.

1

u/Cash4Jesus Jun 27 '25

I have quite a few audiobooks and never finished one until this one. I was extremely disappointed with anything else until I listened to Original Sin. No other audiobook had “it”.

2

u/u0126 Jun 27 '25

I’m worried the movie won’t measure up to the audiobook. and movies are my favorite format!

u/ZwVJHSPiMiaiAAvtAbKq Jun 27 '25

Yep, Ray Porter is great as always, but without spoiling anything, the audiobook handles certain relatively important details very well that enhance the experience. It's absolutely worth listening to it.

u/Caboose127 Jun 27 '25

Anyone who particularly enjoys Ray Porter's narration of this book should check out the Bobiverse series. He also narrates that and it shares a lot of similarities.

4

u/TheShandyMan Jun 27 '25

I binged through Bobiverse in about 2 weeks at work. My only major gripe (while trying to avoid spoilers to anyone else) is that the deeper into the series you get the harder it is to keep track of the ever expanding cast of characters; just because of their....similarities. It makes sense in context of the series but with around 100 named Bobs plus all the other characters it's not always easy.

Also, Homer.

1

u/RayneSexton Jun 29 '25

I can that being an issue. Stratt and Lokken sounded very similar to me. He's really good, but not at the level of Jefferson Mays in my opinion. His voice acting for the Expanse novels is absolutely mesmerizing

3

u/zootered Jun 28 '25

I can’t recommend these audio books enough. Ray Porter’s voice just does it for me.

2

u/MisterMcZesty Jun 27 '25

I read the book and still don’t know what you mean yet haha

4

u/Obi-Wayne Jun 27 '25

I read the book but haven't done the audio version, but I'm assuming he's talking about the musical notes

1

u/MisterMcZesty Jun 27 '25

Oh that makes sense. I’m dumb

1

u/RayneSexton Jun 29 '25

Yeah sound effects really helped out the immersion for this audiobook. Was a great listen.

1

u/RayneSexton Jun 29 '25

Which details besides Rocky's speech? I thought it was a bit confusing at times when switching back and forth from the past and present times. Definitely made me cry hearing him react to Stratt's "betrayal" of sorts at the end. Thought the book was perfect until like chapter 28. Ending was a bit rushed IMO

21

u/BenFoldsFourLoko Jun 27 '25 edited Jun 27 '25

and the chords they did with Rocky's speech is just great

("spoiler" about cool sound effects you could only get through an audiobook and not just text)

3

u/sellieba Jun 27 '25

People like you astound me.

-1

u/BenFoldsFourLoko Jun 27 '25

of all my comments I'd expect this as a response to, I gotta say this wasn't one

wut

2

u/hctib_ssa_knup Jun 27 '25

Everyone is deliberately cryptic and you’re a bull in a china shop.

-6

u/BenFoldsFourLoko Jun 27 '25

do you mean it's a spoiler? it's not a spoiler, it's just neat

if y'all really consider it a spoiler you could actually use your words tho dumbasses. I'll edit my original comment with a tag

2

u/icepigs Jun 27 '25

The audio book was probably my favorite audio book ever.

2

u/Fake_Engineer Jun 27 '25

So should I stop reading the book and find the audio book? I've never done an audio book, but now am curious

2

u/ImaginaryLeopard23 Jun 27 '25

My wife got me the signed hardback and I love reading but...the audiobook is over the top, ridiculously good.

2

u/karasins Jun 27 '25

It's truly on another level compared to other audiobooks imo.

1

u/Hardoffel Jun 27 '25

100% I lucked up with a trial so my introduction was with the audiobook. It's a treat to listen to.

1

u/y-c-c Jun 27 '25

This was the only audio book I listened to due to all the strong recommendations (I am more a visual person usually and prefer reading over listening), and it did not disappoint. I did quite like it and the story itself lent well to it. I would recommend giving it a try if you are curious.

One thing I miss from the audiobook was the diagram that the book contains. My understanding is there is only one diagram in the book but it seems useful to at least have seen it.

1

u/Adamantjames Jun 27 '25

I downloaded the audiobook when I first heard about the movie in production, and was hooked immediately. I don't have a ton of time to sit down and read anymore, but listening while driving or doing chores works well for me. The narrator sounds fantastic, does a great job with the characters, and the music adds so much to the dialogue in ways I don't think you can get in print.

1

u/yoursolace Jun 27 '25

I absolutely loved the book but now I'm curious if I should check out the audiobook as well? Do you think it's worth going back to give it a listen?

1

u/Volpius Jun 27 '25

Yes! 100%.

The story as a whole has a ton of re-readability, but the audiobook is just so damn enjoyable. Ray Porter has the perfect voice and tone to match Andy Weir's writing.

0

u/yoursolace Jul 16 '25

Awesome, I'll have to check it out!

1

u/smakweasle Jun 27 '25

I only listened to it and I still can’t imagine how they did the alien speech. The way it was in the audiobook was incredible.

1

u/SirenSongShipwreck Jun 27 '25

I swear it feels like I listen to the audiobook once a month at this point. It's so good. I've been waiting for this movie for sooooo long.

1

u/TheSigma3 Jun 27 '25

Yes this, the audiobook really pushes the boundaries of a narrated book. Ray Porter comes across so genuine, and the musical notes accompanying Rocky's speech is chefs kiss

1

u/Weird_Tax_6726 Jun 27 '25

This is so true. Ray Porter is amazing! So enjoyable that I have listened to the audiobook several times. It's definitely my comfort audio book on my long commutes to work and home.

1

u/tyrsbjorn Jun 27 '25

Agreed! My wife and I listened on our road trip and he did such a good job! Cannot WAIT to see it. We haven't seen a movie in the theater in years. We both agree this one has to be a theater first.

1

u/brophylicious Jun 27 '25

I wish Ray Porter could read me to sleep every night. I guess he can through audiobooks, but still...

1

u/CountyRoad Jun 28 '25

I got this audio book off of recommendation from Reddit. Needed something for when I had surgery. Got to about 3/4ths before I didn’t need any audio book anymore, but I was hooked and wanted to keep listening. I say all this because I can barely make it through anything so this was amazing.

1

u/Funny-Trash6290 Jun 28 '25

I read the book, but I have heard the audiobook is great.

1

u/vision-quest Jun 28 '25

100% - also some of the mathematic mumbo jumbo is a bit dry in print form, and is more digestible in the audio book imo.

1

u/RayneSexton Jun 29 '25

Have any others narrated by him you'd recommend? Him and Jefferson Mays (Expanse series) have been my absolute favorites so far

1

u/Volpius Jun 29 '25

Definitely check out the Bobiverse series by Dennis E. Taylor. This is Ray Porter's best work, IMO.

3

u/Ragman676 Jun 27 '25

One of the best books Ive read in a while. Same guy who wrote "The Martian". Similar vibes but on a MUCH larger scale. Audio book is amazingly well done.

5

u/secondtaunting Jun 27 '25

It’s so freaking good!!!! I convinced my daughter to read it. She usually only reads more reality grounded books, and she loved it.

2

u/BroughtBagLunchSmart Jun 27 '25

It is extremely enjoyable. I would update my wife about what was going on every few chapters and she got heavily invested as well.

1

u/digitaltransmutation Jun 27 '25

did you watch The Martian?

It's not a direct sequel, but another story in a similar style.

1

u/mad_world Jun 27 '25

Unless you are going to read the book before the movie, stop reading these comments. You'll be glad you did.

1

u/Easy_Acanthisitta_68 Jun 27 '25

I just finished listening to this audiobook and it is so good.

1

u/Rich_Space_2971 Jun 27 '25

Get out of this thread because there are spoilers everywhere.

1

u/anormalgeek Jun 27 '25

It's a REALLY good book. It's hard to explain most of these without spoilers, but suffice it to say that a movie with only one character by himself would be REALLY boring.

1

u/Kilmerval Jun 27 '25

Avoid learning anything about the story if you can. I won't say anything else but this is one where the best way to experience the story is to experience it with the main character.

1

u/Panda_hat Jun 28 '25

Go in blind and spoiler free.

1

u/ArchDucky Jun 28 '25

Bro... For serious, read the book. It's goddamn amazing.

0

u/DontmindmeInquisitor Jun 27 '25

I'm one the few in reddit that absolutely hated this fucking shit book, it's the cringiest book in the world. Just like the "fist me" quotes. The movie can only make it better. Just my opinion.

-5

u/wtb2612 Jun 27 '25 edited Jun 27 '25

Book was honestly the most obnoxious book I think I've ever read. It reads like it was written by a high schooler who spends way too much time on reddit.

4

u/Asquirrelinspace Jun 27 '25

Negative IQ

-3

u/wtb2612 Jun 27 '25

Same to you, buddy.

1

u/TobysGrundlee Jun 27 '25

Maybe some Where's Waldo will put you back in your comfort zone?
