I'd like the think a lot more actors would be out there doing 'weird' movies if they did not have to worry about money or did not have the pressures of being the next "Mr./Ms. Blockbuster Hollywood Heartthrob" pushed on them by their management.

I really respect that both Elijah and Daniel Radcliffe basically got all the money and fame in the world through LOTR and Harry Potter while they were relatively young, so know they can just focus on making stuff that they like.

Perhaps coincidentally, both of these guys seem like they've managed to remain grounded, humble, and unafraid to experiment with their art.

Weird with Radcliffe was so fun.

So was Swiss Army Man.

I haven't rewatched it since it came out, but the unique themes and sheer original creativity of it has stuck with me.

I'll have to look up Weird and give it a watch. Thanks for the recommendation.

Horns is also a good one

Guns Akimbo was a lot of fun too!

Nothing against the dude but I dont think I would have ever heard his name again after Harry Potter wrapped up if it wasn't for reddit. Elijah wood i get but Radcliffe just seems like an average actor bordering on bad a lot of times to me. Like, maybe he actually needs some direction type of thing idk.

Nothing against the dude but I dont think I would have ever heard his name again after Harry Potter wrapped up if it wasn't for reddit.

He went and did a stage play where he shows his dong, figured out how to keep the paparazzi from hounding him, and intentionally chose not to to move to Hollywood to expand his career.

Daniel ducked the HP fame while going indie. You could say went off a rad cliff. You didn’t hear about him in the media post Harry Potter because he didn’t want you to hear about him. Except in places where he has fanbases, like Reddit, because fan discussions are independent of marketing and promotion.

OK so I just looked that up and he dresses sort of like drag in that and the date of that would put it about the same time reddit started gushing about him so I think I just got my answer. This is why i can't take reddit recommendations seriously. Nothing against drag either, just pointing out the weirdness of this sites all of a sudden love for this dude for such a wild ass reason. Im not a betting man but I know how reddit works. It definitely explains the instant downvotes for this which were confusing at first

Hahahahaha what a goofy thing to say. I had no idea he dressed in drag in some play, but I've enjoyed his performance in a few movies since Harry Potter.

u/AluminumGoliath 8h ago

I also enjoyed him in the tv show Miracle Workers

Did you not watch Mickey 17?

u/skateboard_pilot 18h ago

Wait Daniel Radcliffe and Elijah Wood are different people?!!!!!

20

u/IL-Corvo 12h ago

Yup. Tobey Maguire is ALSO a completely different person.

u/SuperSaiyanTupac 8h ago

They should do a reboot of Twins, then halfway through they find out they’re triplets.

u/lynchcontraideal 56m ago

I'm still waiting for them to do a film together, pretty sure they said they'd be up for it if the right script came along.

u/TheBman26 18h ago

I still think Horns is one of Radcliffe’s best films. Still love Miracle Workers though

4

u/ShadedPenguin 8h ago

Horns is strangely endearing of a movie to me. Its heartfelt and beautiful

1

u/TheBman26 4h ago

Yup. Everytime it i watch it it holds up as a great thoughtful film. And the last rewatch I realized Sabrina Carpenter plays the flashback younger version of his lover.

"if they did not have to worry about money"

Well, most of them "worrying about money" is just "how I can get the maximum of money?". It's not like they couldn't live with the money they would get from some indie level projects now and then, mixed with bigger projects.

edit: Also wasn't Frodos payments quite... low? I've heard so much about LOTR cast being paid quite insignificant amounts. Sure Radcliffe and his mates were paid for life, but I don't think LOTR paid that much at all.

u/SteamTrout 17h ago

I don't think a lot of A-listers really worry about money.

I’m not sure. When you live an expensive lifestyle, it can be easy to blow your money and have to pay extravagant bills and debts. Buy multimillion dollar properties in high CoL places, host events, eat the most costly dishes at the most expensive restaurants, hire assistants and PR firms, pay your agent and manager, fly from place to place all the time…

And let it be known that many actors, even some recognizable ones, are not as rich as everyone thinks. You can get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for a project, which is beyond what 99% of working actors make, but if that’s the biggest project you get that year, you may still make a modest, normal amount that year. Acting hubs are usually in very expensive cities (NYC, LA, ATL) that will through your money if you’re living there. At the very least, you will pay your agent a percentage too.

Their agents do.

He has finally worn wigs

49

u/SwordOfTheElevensies 21h ago

But when?

1

u/JAKESTEEL77 3h ago

He "made" wigs in the remake of Maniac.

Wood:

”It’s all circumstantial. That one [‘Maniac’], I was drawn to it because it was taking the source material and doing something really different with it. Remakes are tricky, you know, and both of these films [‘Maniac & Toxic Avengers’] are related in the sense that they made something new of the source material rather than regurgitating it in the same way.”

”I was really attracted to Maniac because… my character doesn’t really show up. It’s primarily a POV film. I love POV horror; it’s really interesting. There’s a great POV horror film from the ‘60s, Peeping Tom. It reminded me of Peeping Tom a little bit, about how wonderful to take this and put you sort of in the mindset of, or at least the POV of, the characters. That was the reason I wanted to do that. And I love the creative team behind that film.”

”And then this one, I mean, Macon [Blair, director of Toxic Avenger], I’ll do anything Macon asks; I’m a huge fan of his work. I worked with him on this movie called I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, and so I’ll do anything for him. He’s a dear friend. And then to be asked to play a character like this in this universe was just a blast. I think it was clear that it was an approach to the original material that was very much its own but had total reverence for what Lloyd [Kaufman of Troma Entertainment] had created.”

”So it was circumstantial that these two things came into my life. I don’t know that I’m seeking these things out, but I love genre, and I’m always going to be interested in making something weird and funny and absurd.”

He was in one called “Cooties” that was actually quite fun. I love being around people who are watching it for the first time.

3

u/IL-Corvo 12h ago

The cast of Cooties is great all-around. Very fun flick.

3

u/MissingLink101 11h ago

I really enjoyed 'Come to Daddy' as well, plus his recent appearance in 'The Monkey' was great.

5

u/Ur_Personal_Adonis 19h ago

Thank you for mentioning this, Cooties is a lot of fun, one of those movies you put on and have a good time with. It doesn't take itself too serious and has a great supporting cast, Cooties is just a blast, a fun ride. Doesn't star Elijah Wood, but another honorable mention and a movie that makes a great double feature with Cooties, Bloodsucking Bastards, a horror/comedy like Cooties from 2015. Starring Fran Kranz, Stoner dude from cabin in the woods, Pedro Pascal, and Joey Kern.

2

u/Never-Compliant6969 19h ago

Don’t forget Emma Fitzpatrick! Bloodsucking Bastards is great. I was also recommending that one recently when someone was talking about how serious Pedro’s roles have been lately.

u/nocontracts 16h ago

Elijah Wood seems to legitimately love cinema/film/movies and everything that goes into them. His production company, Spectrevision is awesome and he has a cool podcast called Visitations where he goes into the homes of filmmakers & creatives to interview them about their creative process.

Elijah Wood just kinda rocks and kicks ass, doing his thing his way.

North.

Everyone forgets the classic.

23

u/eggflip1020 20h ago

He was great in Deep Impact. I think this kid is going somewhere.

6

u/ramenups 20h ago

I must’ve Eternal Sunshine’d that out of my brain because I don’t remember him in that or anything besides LOTR

8

u/GentlemanOctopus 20h ago

Not even Back to the Future II?

3

u/DirtySlutMuffin 17h ago

You mean you have to use your hands?  That’s like a baby’s toy

1

u/ramenups 20h ago

Are you talking about Spaceman from Pluto?

2

u/GentlemanOctopus 20h ago

Nah Spaceman from Pluto II, when he plays the arcade with his hands.

1

u/Albert_Caboose 19h ago

10/10, great joke!

2

u/what_if_Im_dinosaur 16h ago

He really is the good son.

5

u/Pkittens 9h ago

I completely discarded this film since I thought it was another side-story to the MCU and The Avengers. That appears not to be the case, lmao

3

u/chiefbrody62 5h ago

Lol what? The Toxic Avenger was a horror movie from decades ago, it's pretty famous, and has nothing to do with Marvel whatsoever. This is a remake that is still not linked to Marvel.

u/Procrastanaseum 1h ago

Marvel published the Toxic Avenger comics

No connection beyond that

5

u/fertdingo 8h ago

"Everything is Illuminated" was a great movie.

3

u/Electrical_Quality_6 20h ago

my guilty pleasure is remakes

i do love original stuff but so often it fails and falls flat

1

u/C4CTUSDR4GON 20h ago

But the remake worse 90% of the time, no?

2

u/Careless-Dark-1324 17h ago

Honestly. For every good one there’s 10 bad ones that came and went, and nobody remembers they even exists lol

5

u/CobrasMama 16h ago

I feel like it's gotta be closer to 25:1 than 10:1.

It's very rare that a remake is on par or better than an original. Of course, the original Toxie movies were fucking awful from a critical perspective, so it wouldn't be hard to improve upon them with remakes.

(Don't get me wrong, I worship the originals, but I'm self-aware enough to admit that I like campy, low budget horror flicks)

2

u/CaymusJameson 20h ago

I call him Eli Good cuz he lights up my life

1

u/rudyattitudedee 5h ago

I genuinely have a tough time thinking of movies or shows he’s done that aren’t weird, or that he didn’t play a weirdo in. Let’s start with North…

1

u/Drumming_Dreaming 5h ago

I’ll always thank him for The Greasy Strangler.

1

u/Cerulean_IsFancyBlue 4h ago

I remember toxic avenger. I am a little surprised it’s gotten a remake, but, 80s nostalgia.

0

u/MattDLR 7h ago

Don't you mean Peter Dinklage?
