He doesn't often review films that he likes, does he? Even so I doubt he's very much into superhero movies overall. Superhero movies are generally silly and aim at entertaining rather than to be thought-provoking. Just like with his Frozen review, he probably just wanted to review this because he's annoyed with the hype.

He does, but they tend to be festival films from TIFF or Sundance

He does now. He has branched out from more than just his YMS videos which is why he does the quickies.

His quickies are just reviews of any films he feels like talking about, many of them he likes a lot (he recently did one on Phantom Thread and gave it a 9/10).

His actual "YMS" videos are obviously about films he considers bad, since that's the whole point of that series, and hence the name "Your Movie Sucks".

Branched out? He's been doing quickies for the longer part of the YMS channels' existance. He even changed the format of quickies from fresh out of the cinema face cam reviews to lightly edited quick takes on a particular movie.

I get that you are joking, but it bothers me that this is actually a point of contention.

There is nothing wrong with loving watching easily digestible movies. Watching a deep and thought-provoking movie can be exhausting at times.

This is the reason Nolan's trilogy is considered groundbreaking, paved the way for a serious grounded tone in the genre.

paved the way for a serious grounded tone in the genre.

Logan is the single attempt at a follow up on the tone from Nollanverse tho...Out of like 20 movies.

I think that it also lead to things like the original Iron Man and Captain America: The Winter Soldier to a lesser extent. Those movies are far more grounded than many other super hero movies and have fairly serious tones (less so the original Iron Man, but when Tony was in the cave it was fairly dark)

Probably not? Batman Begins made less than 400 million dollars on a 150 million dollar budget. I doubt anyone was recoiling in shock at its success eager to copy it. Also, Nolan couldn't direct a fight scene for shit and could barely navigate his way around an action sequence at all (until Inception, of course, because Inception is fucking legit).

As for Iron Man, it definitely owed itself much more to the almost contemporaneous Sony Spider-Man films that were making Batman Begins money several times over, had huge flying choreography, over-the-top action sequences, big-scale sci-fi set pieces, and the whole "superhero gets his ass brutally handed to him by the villain to raise the stakes" attitude that Nolan never touched until DKR.

I am being sarcastic but there are entire subs dedicated in trying to prove you otherwise.

But they might not be to his taste, maybe he enjoys movies that demand some kind of thought instead of meaningless action? It's not pretentious to have different tastes in movies.

I'm just joking dude

But you can have both, to simply be ok with utter intellectual void is what drags films as a medium down.

Please tell me you've seen Unbreakable.

u/stylelimited Feb 17 '18

I said "generally" and I stand by that. Even so, while Unbreakable can be argued to be about a superhero, it is very different from DC or Marvel movies made in the 21st century and simply lumping it into the same category would be to disregard what makes Unbreakable unique.
