Best American rock band of all time

This is obviously a subjective post. As post suggest “all time” so feel free to go back to to the 50’s and please consider that bands from this millennium may not hold up in a couple decades. Also genre blending bands welcome.

Creedence Clearwater Revival....

I’m convinced everyone loves CCR

I’d be the exception, though I do respect John Fogerty. I feel the same way about Creedence as I do about Bob Seger: they’re not bad, just not inspiring to me in any way.

I love CCR and hate Bob Seger. lol

Gotta say, I’m strangely attached to your User Name…but I’ve always appreciated weird! 😆

Ha! Thanks!

You should judge them from their time.

I am from their time and I agree with Tangy_Fetus_1958. Neither band inspired me to do much, other than turn the sound down.

You’ve described my feelings exactly about both CCR and Bob Seger. And I am judging from their time, for what it’s worth.

I used to like a lot of Bob Seeger’s music - not enough to buy it, but I’d enjoy it - but his music has not aged well for me in the current millennium.

Same here this is basically my thoughts about CCr almost word for word

Have you ever listened to the Bob Seger System (outside of Ramblin' Gamblin' Man)? If you like more live, garage vibes, that shit kills! Detroit Bob > Hollywood Bob (though I also like a lot of Hollywood Bob, Detroit Bob/Bob Seger System crushes it overall)

I listened to their whole first album at work today. I appreciated the rawness of the band, but I could really hear his Creedence influence (with a little early Stones mixed in), so I didn’t care for it any more than I do “Hollywood Bob.” I did think Gone was a nice song, though. Thanks for the recommendation!

But they sound so American

1

u/Tangy_Fetus_1958 4h ago

Yes they do, and if the category had been “Most American-sounding rock band of all time,” they might be contenders…

Oh I see now

I'm from the south, know they're California poseurs who never saw Louisana until they started touring, and *still* love nearly everything they did. Ramble Tamble is a top 5, maybe 3, song of all time. Only Mardi Gras is mid (and still has a couple of their best songs)

I’m not a huge fan. Of course I like some of their songs but wouldn’t say I “love” CCR.

There is currently a fleet of helicopters flying towards you with doors open and mounted machine guns, blasting "Fortunate Son".

I do not.

CCR is more of a Greatest Hits band for me. Deep-diving their discography doesn’t do much for me.

3

u/illirving 4d ago

CCR easily has 30-40 songs that could be considered greatest hits. Most bands only have a handful if they're lucky.

I’m more of a whole-album guy. If a band doesn’t have at least one standout album that I am drawn to over and over, they’re unlikely to get a lot of attention from me.

I can hear CCR on Sirius/XM radio when I’m driving and that’s really all the CCR I need in my life.

u/NastySassyStuff 4d ago

Nah, have you ever listened to Pendulum? It’s like mostly deep cuts and so many of them rip

2

u/_Bon_Vivant_ 4d ago

That's like their second worst album, after Mardi Gras. IMO.

2

u/Sgspecial1 4d ago

Yeah, the beginning of the end

2

u/NastySassyStuff 4d ago

Those other albums are all brilliant. That’s far from a demerit.

1

u/Similar_Tie3291 4d ago

No, the three I’m familiar with are Bayou County, Cosmo’s Factory, and Green River.

1

u/NastySassyStuff 4d ago

Check it out. It’s stacked…Pagan Baby, Sailor’s Lament, Chameleon, Molina, Hey Tonight…pretty much the whole damn album is good IMO and the only one most people know is Have You Ever Seen the Rain.

Its Just A Thought and (Wish I Could) Hideaway are two of my favorite songs by CCR. I also really loved the raw bluesey sound of their debut album. Porterville, The Working Man, Walking On The Water... I'm probably going to put that album on now

1

u/Hot_Direction6627 4d ago

I feel the same way about the Beatles

2

u/unhalfbricklayer 4d ago

They only had a 3 year run, that hurts them in the "best ever" category

3

u/Beneficial-Produce56 4d ago

Very good choice. The soundtrack of America.

2

u/rowdymowdy 4d ago

Yes yes the only true American unifying choice lol

4

u/Straight-Camel4687 4d ago

Fun fact: I saw CCR in ‘72, my son saw Fogerty in ‘22, a 50 year span!

1

u/NastySassyStuff 4d ago

You could’ve ended that where the comma began and it’d still be a very fun fact. Not a lot of people can say they saw the real band. They existed for like 4-5 years

u/BlondePuppyDoctor 4d ago

This is the correct answer
